This was such a cute book. I loved the characters and all of the cute settings in the story. I also really liked that there weren’t any homophobic situations and was just a great story about gay love. It excites me more and more every time these stories are released.
Oh my goodness. This book has all of the feelings. It’s got all of the awkward cringe of asking someone out for the first time. The highs and lows of your first relationship and falling in love. Figuring out who you are and who you want to be in that relationship. How your friends and family affect it. Figuring out what you deserve and how you want to be treated.
This book felt so honest and I think Micah is adorably sweet and loved reading about his relationships.
This is one of my favorite reads of the year! If you love fairy tales, a good queer romcom, art and iced chai lattes, this book is for you! I truly adored the characters and I hope you'll find comfort in them too!
I'm conflicted about this one because there are parts that I really loved and that made me smile, but there were also parts that didn't. I didn't like the insta love connection even though the first date was so cute. I Hate that I felt bad for Grant and enjoyed some of their cute moments because he's toxic af! And then there is Elliot, sweet Elliot! I wanted more of him!! Overall, I don't know how I feel. I liked it but I didn't love it, but at some points, I did love it! So confusing.
I do recommend checking it out for yourself and seeing how you feel about it because there is some potential for it to be amazing for the right reader.
content warning: toxic relationship
I'm sure some teens will like this book, but it wasn't for me. The main character was so clueless that it was annoying. I did like exploring the city through this book, but the romance wasn't for me. It didn't really feel like the main character deserved the love interest at the end.
I've read quite a few romances lately and I wasn't sure another one was going to work. but this one did! Absolutely adorable. I think it's easy to imagine love and want love, but it's really hard to connect with people face-to-face. Especially in the time of on-line school, on-line connections and meetings. So I thought this was the perfect fairytale style story. I found Micah's pining cute and understanding. I found the love story just the adorable I was looking for. It's a quick read, light and lovely. I highly recommend it for a light, sweet, cute read!
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
In this rom-com Micah Summers is in search of his first real boyfriend. The catch is he has a super popular Instagram that details all of the 'dates' he has been on and not a single one was real. Micah is ready for boy 100 and wants to make sure that it counts.
This book was a cute rom com that definitely skews a bit young in the YA genre. Even in comparison to Sass' other works it the Micah as a character can be a bit frustrating at times as a older YA fan. But it is still a great story that I think YA readers will enjoy.
When I received this arc I was super excited due to the adorable cover and interesting premise. I knew it would be a little corny, but honestly many books pull it off. This was not one of them in my opinion.
Characters being insufferable can occasionally be remedied with character development but our main character, Micah Summers, has very little of that. Grant was also just a horrible character and full of red flags. I disliked both of them most of the time. The other side characters were quite likeable but fell flat at times. Elliot was definitely my favorite character, he deserves way better than Micah, who is constantly compared to a prince when he really isn't.
The start of Micah and Grant's relationship was just odd. I understand that it would be unfortunate to lose that person you had a meet cute with but resulting to trailing around the city for him is a bit much. His stalker behavior was horrible and the fact it was seen as a cute little thing? I don't know it rubbed me the wrong way. This is also amplified by the fact that this book starts off with Micah also tracking down another boy.
The rest of their relationship was, of course, very quickly moving. This was expected with the cute meeting, but I hoped for some more of the getting-to-know-you phase. I am definitely a hopeless romantic but even I know that so many idealistic views on your partner isn't going to make for a healthy relationship.
The whole undiscussed plot line about how Micah is rich and Elliot can't afford an AC is also just odd. I get why they made Micah rich and famous and Elliot poor but the whole dynamic they had was definitely something. This definitely played into my opinion of Micah as a whole, he was mainly just a rich spoiled kid.
I could go on, but overall I just really didn't like this. Many could still love it but definitely not for me. Thank you to Penguin Teen for sending me an ARC of this in exchange for my honest review.
I! love! queers! The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers is an absolute dream come true. Thank you for the tale, Adam Sass.
Thoughts and Themes: This is another one that I am so glad to have waited to listen to the audiobook but also be able to follow along using the e-book/physical book. The images really add to the story so if you listen to the audiobook make sure you have a way to access the images included.
There are so many moments throughout this book that I highlighted because I resonated with the things being said by the characters. The whole time as I was listening to this book I found myself yelling at Micah because as the reader you know something that he isn’t picking up on.
There are so many moments that broke my heart but I can’t tell you about them all without running the story. Just have some tissues near you and be careful to not throw whatever device you are reading on across the room.
Characters: In this book you are introduced to several characters through their interactions with our main character, Michah Summers. You get to meet his friends, Elliot and Hannah, his parents, his sister, his boyfriend, Grant, and a few side characters.
I really enjoyed all of the relationships that you get to see throughout this book because each of them adds something different to Micah’s life. When I first started reading this one I really didn’t understand the point of Grant being introduced and was quite frustrated with him. It really isn’t until the ending that you understand why he needed to be included into this story. I really enjoyed the relationship that Micah and Grant have especially closer to the end of this book. I think he needed to be included in the story for there to have been any character growth for Micah.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Micah and Elliot, this was actually my favorite throughout the whole book. The friendship between these two is wholesome and this is what I really enjoy about their relationship. I really like how the two of them bring out the best in each other and how they just know what the other needs.
Something else that I really enjoyed about this book was the relationship that each of the characters have with their family members. I love how supportive their families are of them and how we get to see how those dynamics play out. I especially like how involved Micah’s parents are in his life and even how his sister gets involved.
Writing Style: This book is told in first person through the perspective of Micah. I really enjoyed having the story be told in his perspective because it doesn’t let us know how others are feeling. I liked that people had to directly tell Micah anything for him to understand what was going on.
I enjoyed this fairy tale-like queer romance set in Chicago! I really liked the way fairy tales were woven into every part of the story.
The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers has a solid premise and was clearly written with love, however, I'm disappointed to say I never truly got sucked into the story. I found the writing style, as well as dialogue, and many elements of the plot, geared toward a much younger audience, and I found it hard for me to relate, even reflecting on my own much younger years. Although the writing style/audience aim made this a relatively lackluster reading experience for me, this is a YOUNG ADULT book. It quite simply wasn't written for me or my age group, therefore I can definitely see others in a younger generation thoroughly enjoying this one. I'll definitely recommend it to younger YA readers who come into the store, as well as my nieces when they're a little bit older. I truly believe this book would be magical in the hands of a young YA reader, just not for me.
I loved the modern day fairytale element that this book has and the characters are so loveable. i really loved Elliot , he is just the sweetest!
Firstly, I will say that this is very cute. Unfortunately, there is a story beat that is a bit too much for me. I still thoroughly enjoyed this and could not stopped reading it, however.
Micah believes in fairytales.
He runs a Instagram account where he documents people he has had crushes on and draws them in fantasyland. His fans are keen to see who boy 100 will be.
He sparks a connect on a train in which the guy leaves his jacket by mistake and Micah and his friends have to track him down. What happens when the clock strikes midnight?
The book was super sweet and aimed at a younger crowd. The story itself was easy to follow and I was hoping that what I thought was going to happen came true. Fairytales do exist.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
An absolutely delightful read! I listened to The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers on audiobook and loved every second of it! I loved the fairytale elements and how the stories were used throughout the story. Micah was an absolutely enchanting character who experiences such amazing growth throughout the novel. I highly recommend this book and hope more people add it to their TBRs.
This was such a cute story. I really enjoyed how the characters got to know each other and they had a sweet chemistry. I wish I could have had just a little bit more of just the two of them but that’s just cause I liked their scenes together.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review! It was incredibly well done and I loved the plot.
The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers follows (you guessed it) Micah Summers, who is on a quest to find the perfect (or really, any) boyfriend. Micah has an Instagram called 'instaloves' where he posts fantastical drawings of all his crushes. But for his 100th post, Micah knows it has to be something more than just a crush. It has to be The One.
I had fun reading this book. It's light, it's cute, the cover is so, so pretty. It also had a bunch of drawings integrated throughout which was such a cute touch! I really fell in love with Elliot's character (even though I think he deserves better oop).
But... honestly? I think there might be something with me not really enjoying books about teenagers with internet-fame because I really did not enjoy that aspect of this. It just didn't feel genuine. Maybe part of it is that he has so many followers that I just wouldn't understand as a small lil book reviewer, but I honestly think a bigger part of it was that it lacked character. Micah didn't feel real.
I found Micah pretentious and increasingly lacking the self-awareness that an actual 17 year old would have. Which is already a low bar. He also kept showing off his immense privilege as a white gay teenage guy whose family is literally millionaires (you have to be to live in a penthouse, right??), but never addressed it in the context of his sheltering from real life. Because he does not live in a real life as it is. He tries to fix everything, which is admirable, but also immensely frustrating because he never once actually helped someone by considering what they want outside of what he would want in their position. A convoluted way of saying Micah wasn't particularly noteworthy. We already have a lot of this representation: white, gay, rich, accepted by his family. And not to say those stories aren't important, but they also are not representative at all.
And I also really didn't like the romance. I don't want to spoil anything, but every way I look at the journey Micah goes through, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Micah focused so much on getting a boyfriend and never actually focused on the root of his problems. Actually, I don't he had problems outside not having a boyfriend. Which is part of the issue. (Give me that internal struggle! Self-growth is key in YA!!)
I just wished there was some more challenging in this book. There was so much room for Micah to grow, and he never fully took that chance. Everyone (except Elliot) made horrible decisions at one point or another, but Micah's never resolved.
The writing also bordered on being cringey. It read either way too young and/or super fake. It lacked the authenticity I love in YA.
Read it if these aspects don't bother you and you're looking for something cute and mindless! I wasn't a huge fan, personally.
Affluent teen, Micah, desperately needs to ask out the boy of his dreams, of which there are many, hence the title, The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers. Sometimes what you think you need isn’t the perfect boy but the right boy and this fairy tale comes to that conclusion by the end of the book. Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Teen for the ARC.
