The plot is vast and intense, unfolding in different decades and different locations, and revealing layer-upon-layer of deceit and betrayal. It is gothic, and haunting, deeply psychological, questioning love, loyalty and morality. It explores the power of art to intice the inept and drive the artist to the edge of sanity. It challenges the reliability of memory and one's quest to change a fractured past. It delves deep into one's innermost beliefs and a religion older than time itself.
On cliffs near Land's End, the plot touches on the grand guignol with all the tropes of Rebecca and Wuthering Heights.
This book was so good! I want to see more from this author in the future!! I couldn't put this book down. What a page turner!!!
A dying woman is suffocated in her hospital bed. Her last visitor, Madeleine Reed, is accused of the crime. There are no witnesses. Madeleine cannot recall committing the murder and has no motive. Claiming to be pursued by the Furies, punitive figures from Greek mythology, she is found guilty of manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility. After her release from a secure hospital she is drawn back to the Cornish coastal village where she lived before the murder and where her mother had died years before in mysterious circumstances.
Slowly, her memories begin to return. She knows that she must finally confront the hideous Furies who alone can bring the truth to light. But can she bear to uncover the horrific, distant memories she has repressed for so long?
This was a fun mystery & thriller story. Very exciting and interesting.
