A Rover's Story was much loved in our home. I felt such a range of emotions while reading this book. I was laughing and at times near tears. It is so much more than just a story about a Mars rover - it is about family, growing up, and ultimately resilience.
@jasminewargabooks knocked it out of the universe with A Rover’s Story.
This beautiful book will be loved for its STEAM connections but also because it’s a found family story at its heart. And this book has so much heart!
This would make great #classroomreadalouds but I also can’t wait to put it into the hands of students who love reading:
⭐️how things work/engineering
⭐️ coming of age stories
⭐️ anything Space related
Rover's Story tugs at the heartstrings. A series of letters to a Mars Rover from a girl who is fulfilling a schoolwork assignment. Meanwhile, her mother works with the Mars Rover her daughter is writing to. Such a beautiful, heart-warming story. HIGHLY recommend to readers in grades 4th and up.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book, as this book has already been published, I will not share my review on Netgalley at this time.
Great book! Jasmine Warga is always surprising me by what she’ll write next and this was so different than her other books! Recommended to readers who like space, The Wild Robot, and science fiction.
This book is so beautiful. You wouldn't expect a book about a robot to tap so deeply into our shared humanity, but this book does so brilliantly. I'm obsessed with the characteriation of Res, Fly, Journey, even Guardian. I'm obsessed with Sophie. I'm just. So moved.
Not since "The Wild Robot" has there been a story about a machine that can capture your heart the way Res can! This story is a must read for all ages. I cannot wait to share it with my students in the fall for the Global Read Aloud.
On October 4th Jasmine Warga's A Rover's Story was published. It's been my favorite middle grade novel of the year, and I believe it will be read aloud to kids for years to come. Highly recommend!
Jasmine Warga is one of my favorite middle grade authors from the last few years. I have enjoyed her books so much. A Rover's Story is quite different from the others but was such a fun read. I loved Res the robot and his eager determination to get the job done. I loved his relationship with Fly and the satellite. There were so many fun humorous moments in this story that had me laughing out loud. But there was also so much heart as well. I certainly teared up a bit with the ending. I can't wait to see what else Jasmine Warga comes up with.
I received an eArc of this text from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am in love and obsessed with this book and am going to be pushing to adopt it into my curriculum. Jasmine Warga has written some fabulous middle-grade texts and does it again with a Rover's Story. Without giving away spoilers, this text covers growing up and social-emotional health and contains so many STEM connections. It is an enjoyable pleasure read for a curious student as well.
Beep boop beep! A Rover's Story is a heartwarming tale from the point of view of a Mars mission rover. Starting from their first thought upon being powered on, Res has many thoughts... and feelings. Other robots think he is strange, but he learns about emotions from the humans who are building and caring for him. His mission? Explore the Martian landscape and send information back to Earth. He meets a great cast of characters along the way, and you will be rooting for his success. Enjoy A Rover's Story today!
An interesting and heartfelt middle grade novel told through the point of view of a Mars rover. The story spans decades.
A Rover's Story by Jasmine Warga is perfect for the kid who is looking for something to read after 'The Wild Robot'.
A beautiful story. Jasmine Warga does it again! Her writing is stunning and she is a masterful story-teller. Fall in love with a robot and the magic of space!
Thank you to Netgalley for the review copy of A Rover's Story by Jasmine Warga. This book is wonderfully lyrical, and incredibly imaginative.
Res (Resilience) is a Mars rover who can't seem to remember that he is a ROBOT, not human. His world is defined by the human emotions around him, even though he has a job to do that requires him to stay rational. Told through his perspective, as well as the human perspective as letters from the daughter of Res's creator, A Rover's Story explores what it means to be human and how rational thinking doesn't always get the job done.
I purchased this book to share with my students soon after I began reading my advanced copy.
A fantastic, wonderful story for fans of The Wild Robot and space stories! The science is well-balanced with the emotional sides of the story, both from Resilience, the rover, and Sophie, the daughter of one of the engineers who worked on the rover. Resilience, or Res for short, can only communicate with other robots and machines, but by observing the scientists ("hazmats") he develops an understanding of human emotions. He is empathetic, curious, and even a little insecure, and reading his perspective of traveling to Mars to explore that world for humans is inspiring, poignant, and breathtaking.

I have tried to enlist technical staff at NetGalley, without success. I simply cannot download a version of Adobe Reader that is sufficiently functional, as my Kindle Fire already has an outdated version.
I am not usually a big fan of science fiction, but this one has so much heart! I loved both Res and Sophie and was completely drawn into their stories. It reminded me of my feelings while reading The Wild Robot.
This is a unique story, not just about a Mars rover, but also mother daughter relationships over time. I loved the format of alternating the perspective of Res with letters from Sophie to give different perspectives of the story, and to tell the story of the scientists as well as the robot.
I would love to see Jasmine Warga's newest win the Newbery Medal! Resilience, Res, is a Mars rover that is being built to work on the treacherous planet without human emotion. And yet, Res feels - for the scientists, for the little girl whose mom helps build the rover, and for humanity.
Students will love this story's alternating POVs, the science story, and the family story all mixed into one beautiful book. Jasmine Warga knows how to weave a tale! In the author's notes, we learn that Ms. Warga got the idea for this book from her own family while watching the news about the Mars rover.
Recommended for ages 8 and up.
