I was hooked on this book from the first chapter and loved that it had two timelines (I love this kind of book).
In the first timeline (the present), we are at BettyKay's funeral. Her daughters have drifted apart, but are trying to hold it together for their dearly departed mom. Things get interesting when Kitty, a famous star, shows up at their mother's funeral. They have no idea how they knew each other. We then transport 50 years in the past and learn about Kitty and BettyKay's rooming together at nursing school.
All BettyKay ever wanted to do was become a nurse and leave her hometown. Kitty is still trying to figure out life. BettyKay has a beau that has been deployed to Vietnam and they are both scared of what the future holds. We get to follow the girls through life after nursing school, the conclusion of the war, and Kitty's Hollywood career. Back in the present day, the girls are having difficulty believing Kitty because they have never heard of her.
I just loved everything about this book. I do believe this is the first book I have ever read mentioning serving in Vietnam. I loved the friendships and how they were written. I am going to recommend this to all my friends.
A story of true friendship and sisterly love!
It's a really enjoyable story - a dual timeline, set in modern day and Vietnam War era as told by BettyKay and her daughters. It starts at the end - Betts' funeral, when a movie star shows up and turns their lives upside down. The characters are strong women, the storyline interesting and will keep you reading to find out the answer's the sisters are looking for. The button storyline is awesome and it was heartwarming to read the author's notes and realize that's really happening, I love it!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.
Oh, wow! This story was so much more than I expected. This is a powerful story of love, friendship and family. The historical parts are wonderfully done and very enlightening. The modern time line is emotional and entertaining. Once I hit the 50% mark, I couldn't stop reading. I just had to know more about all of these amazing women.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
A page turner you will not want to put down. Two sisters are at their mother’s funeral when an unexpected guest comes and turns their world upside down. Now they want to find out who exactly was BettyKay Beecher?
History, glamour, friendships, this book has it all and will have you hooked from the beginning.
I raced through this book! Absolutely loved it! The story is about two sisters who are together after their wonderful mother died. A surprise visitor to the funeral sets the course of their lives on different paths, and they find their world expanding!
The Sunshine Girls
I’m not always one for historical fiction, but I’m so glad I read this book. I really loved it. I have to admit it was the cover that drew me in, but once I started reading this book I was hooked. This was a heartfelt book about a mother’s love, friendships, and old Hollywood glamour. This was a powerful book, with a beautifully woven story that takes the reader through many years of love, heartbreak, secrets, revelations, and more. It was a beautifully written story with characters that you will not forget. The cover of this book is beautiful! I’m very excited to see this book come to print a little further down the road. It deserves all the accolades possible. Many thanks to NetGalley and to Harlequin Trade Publishing for the ARC.
