“Maybe an Artist” is a delightful graphic memoir by Liz Montague. The book chronicles Liz’s struggle to figure out what is meaningful to her while also trying to meet her family’s expectations. This is complicated by the social and economic unrest that many millennials faced, including the September 11 attacks and the Islamophobia that followed. Liz acknowledges that these issues sometimes fade into the background as she navigates middle school, high school, and college, where she feels pulled in different directions. Pressured to live up to her sisters’ examples, Liz breaks school records and goes to college on an athletic scholarship, where she rediscovers her passion for art. Funny and wry, this memoir is relatable for readers in any generation who had a difficult time finding their place.
