As a heat wave kept residents away from New York in the summer of 1888, investigative journalist Genevieve Stewart was tasked with finding who had killed Beatrice Holler, fellow model of Genevieve's good friend Callie. Together with her friend Daniel McCaffrey, and much against the local police, Longstreet's, admonitions, they set to, searching among the local art scene, and speaking to the well-known artists. When another young woman was murdered, then a third, Genevieve's anger at the police and their lack of effort, sparked more from Genevieve and Daniel.
With first one suspect then another, the two sleuths had their work cut out. But they could feel they were getting close. Would they discover who was doing the heinous killings? And would they risk their own lives once again?
Treachery on Tenth Street is the 3rd in the Gilded Gotham Mystery series by Kate Belli and I enjoyed it very much. Although a bit slow in places, the camaraderie of the two main characters saw them working well together. I'm looking forward to the 4th in the series, and recommend Treachery on Tenth Street highly.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
The oppressive heat of New York City in the summer of 1889 has driven society’s elite to the cooler shores of Newport. A request for help brings Genevieve Stewart, a reporter, back to the city. After missing for several months, her best friend Callie has resurfaced and has asked her to look into the death of her friend Bea, an artist’s model. Bea had been found with her throat cut, yet the police have it listed as a suicide. Jack the Ripper’s murders were recently headlines in the papers and the police do not want to cause a panic. With her associate Daniel McCaffrey, Genevieve soon discovers the body of Violet, another model. Confronting Detective Longstreet, they reluctantly agree to hold back on what they have found in exchange for access to what the police have found. Callie also offers her assistance. She had been a socialite before her family lost its’ fortune. Now she makes her living as a muse and model for Walter Wilson as he sculpts his statues.
As the weather heats up and tensions in the city rise, Kate Belli takes her characters on a delightful trip to Coney Island. They can temporarily forget their investigation and the mood becomes more lighthearted. Then a member of their party is found slain in one of the attractions. Forcing herself to review the police photos of each of the victims, Genevieve finally begins to see a pattern. It becomes a race to find the killer before Callie becomes the next victim.
This is the third book in Belli’s series. Genevieve has grown from a fledgling reporter who covers society events to a journalist chasing stories and often putting herself in danger. Daniel grew up on the streets of the city and is no stranger to the gangs. He is now a lawyer and has come into wealth of his own, but his past connections often play a part in their investigations. As the series has progressed they have become closer and there is evidently a mutual attraction. Treachery in Tenth Street will keep you guessing to the final scene and looking forward to Genevieve and Daniel’s return. I would like to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing this book for my review.
I’ve enjoyed the earlier books in this series. I suppose you could read the book without having read the earlier ones, but it would be better to read the first two. I’ve read them and I’d forgotten the details and background, but then I read a lot of historical mysteries since that is one of my favorite genres.
I enjoyed following along with Genevieve and Daniel as they try to figure out who is killing artists’ models. There was not much suspense as who was going to get killed next and who was probably responsible for the murders, but it was still entertaining to read the mystery. I heartily recommend this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
Set in the stifling hot New York City summer of 1889, Treachery on Tenth Street is the third in the delightful Gilded Gotham series. This book tackles the subject of art modeling during the staid Victorian era. It is viewed as an unseemly occupation as it often coincided with the darker side of life, something one just didn't talk about in polite society. Mysteries and secrets swirl and rumours of Jack the Ripper abound, especially as his rampage came to a sudden stop in England. Mistresses and class divides are also enmeshed into the story and men live by different mores than women do.
Partners in crime Genevieve and Daniel are asked to investigate the throat-cutting murder of artist model, Bea. They use their particular skillsets to try to find the killer before the next crime is committed. Genevieve's friend Callie is in the same line of work she fears she may be next. Daniel is anxious to salvage her reputation but Callie enjoys the money and in her mind the perks of being a mistress. It's not all fun and games, however.
Historical and art descriptions are intriguing and romance is in the air. I wonder what Kate Belli has planned for the fourth in the series? Historical Fiction readers especially will enjoy this wonderfully-written story.
My sincere thank you to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for the privilege of reading this beguiling book!
It's a sweltering summer in New York City in 1889 when a series of murders of local models starts that are eerily similar to those of Jack the Ripper in London. Has he suddenly changed locales? Genevieve Stewart, the up-and-coming investigative reporter, has been through hell and back in two previous murder cases but this case hits too close to home to ignore. She has teamed up again with Daniel McCaffrey, with whom a love interest has been blossoming.
This is the third book in the Gilded Gotham series featuring the two protagonists and it's well-paced and filled with mystery. Stewart and McCaffrey have dangled a bit close to death before and might have taken a break and left the sleuthing to others. But Genevieve's friend Cassie shows up after a long absence when her fellow model friend is killed. There are things happening at the Tenth Street building where artists live and work with their models and it seems it may be up to this pair to help along the authorities. As it is, few real details of the deaths are making it into the news and it's to be wondered why there is a cover-up. Like the earlier books, this is well-written and filled with a certain amount of realism in the characters. I really like the way they are affected enough by previous experience to be wary of heading into more of the same. While they aren't easily upset, they do have limits.
Overall this is another great instalment in the series and I hope to see more in the future. I give this 4 solid stars. Thank you to Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for the free advanced reader copy. I have provided my review voluntarily.
The summer of 1888 was especially hot and for some, terrifying but the intrepid Genevieve Stewart and Daniel McCaffrey are on the trail of the villain who has been killed beautiful young women. Rumors are swirling that Jack the Ripper has moved from London to the US but they don't think that's the case. What they do think is that someone who moves in elite circles has been murdering these artists models but who? Luckily, they both have access to people the police do not. This is an atmospheric Gilded Age mystery with good characters and a tricky mystery. I enjoyed the first book but missed the second; Belli gives enough backstory to catch up readers like me or those who are new to the series. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good read.
The wealthiest models are being brutally killed off but the Police seem to want to keep it under wraps.
Rumours that Jack the Ripper has crossed the Atlantic and continuing in New York is enough to send its
citizens into a frenzy and for them to hound the Police and the politicians.
The models are also mistresses of various very highly placed people and silence on their deaths seems to
be paramount. Not to Genevieve Stewart and her able partner Daniel McCaffrey who have worked in partnership
before to solve crimes. Genevieve is a journalist by profession and is keen that investigative journalism
should be her forte. 1888 was not a time when this was acceptable by society and she has fought enormous odds
to reach this position. Her own parents are supportive, but her brothers are protective and abhor the danger
she puts herself in.
Daniel and Genevieve make a formidable team. They have access to the upper class which the Police cannot get
to and so they make bigger strides in the investigation much to the chagrin of the Police force. Danger, class
divides, upper class society of New York as stringent as it was in England if not more are all brought together
in this very entertaining read.
When Genevieve Stewart's friend Callie reappears after disappearing from society, she brings with her a mystery that she would like Genevieve to investigate. One of her friends, an artist's model named Bea, was found with her throat slashed and the police are calling it suicide. Genevieve, along with her friend Daniel, are both eager to look into this case.
When their investigation leads to a second murdered young artist's model, they have a host of artists and male patrons of art as their suspects. The police are willing to let Genevieve and Daniel investigate though they are trying to keep their investigations quiet. The police are concerned that the public will be needlessly frightened especially since some of the newspapers are saying that Jack the Ripper has made his way to New York.
When a third artists' model is also murdered while with Genevieve, Daniel and other friends at Coney Island, fears rise that Genevieve's friend Callie might be next.
This was an entertaining historical mystery set in New York in 1889. I enjoyed the setting and the characters. I liked the way Genevieve and Daniel's romance is progressing toward marriage. I liked the way he supported her in her quest to become an investigative journalist. There was a lot of action and a lot of suspects for Genevieve to investigate.
Fans of the series will enjoy this episode.
I really love this series and book three was not a disappointment. I would not recommend reading this one with out reading the first two. I would however recommend that you read all three of them. Genevieve and Daniel are such engaging characters once I start reading I cannot stop.
In this book Genevieve and Daniel are once again investigating a murder. There are some really great twists and turning in this novel and Belli does such a great job of describing New York in the middle of summer.
I could go on and gush all day long about this book, there is no downside to reading this wonderful series.
Many thanks to Netgalley the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this amazing novel.
A fun and fast-paced mystery set in 19th century New York, centering around some familiar characters and a handful of new ones. This is the third book in a series, and I'll admit to not having read the first two, though now I think I'd like to go back and pick them up!
In this story, Genevieve and Daniel are asked to investigate the suspicious death of a friend of a friend — Bea, a popular artist model. Her throat has been cut, yet the police have ruled her death as accidental. Considering this more than fishy, Genevieve and Daniel dig in, only to find that similar murders keep occurring, and all to female art models within the same circle. In the sweltering New York summer, they must race against time to figure out who is behind these gruesome killings before more of their friends end up as victims.
The imagery in this book is unexpectedly vivid. I especially loved the cats' prints in the art studio and the various Coney Island descriptions. All a bit gothic! I found the pace pretty fast and the story easy to follow, with Genevieve and Daniel both likable characters. Having not read the previous two novels, I was at first concerned that I might not understand what was going on, but I was never confused and I found the characters compelling even without having read about them before. I am interested to see where the next installment takes us!
Thank you to Kate Belli, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!
This is the second book I read in this excellent series and I thoroughly enjoy it.
The Gilded Age background is well done, well researched, and vivid. I love Genevieve, a rebel according to the rules, and how she defy the rules investigating.
The mystery is solid and well plotted, it kept me hooked and guessing.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The summer heat has hit gilded age New York City. While most the Astor 400 have escaped to Newport, someone has been killing the New York's top models. Genevieve's friend Callie, a model herself, has asked her and Daniel to find the killer before more models turn up dead. The police have done little as the murders emulate Jack the Ripper who has supposedly left London. Has he come to New York City? That is certainly on everyone's minds. The character development is strong in this addition to Belli's Gilded Gotham Mystery series. I like that we get to see Callie again and learn what she has been up to since her family's fortune was lost and she was cast out of society. The mystery was also well developed and kept you on your toes. Their investigation takes them all across the city to Long Island, Staten Island, and even Coney Island. A well done mystery that any historical mystery fan will enjoy.
This is 3rd in series featuring a female newspaper reporter in late 1800s New York.
Genevieve Stewart, a wealthy young woman who is put on “society events” by her editor rather than the grittier investigations she’d like, partners with her compatriot Daniel McCaffrey in looking into the deaths of several artists’ models who are eerily posed in death from their sketches in life.
There are some thrills and danger (especially at Coney Island and the ending of the book) and also some developments in the mains personal lives which will be interesting to see play out in future installments.
All-in-all a good addition to the series.
My sincere thanks to the author, NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing the free early arc for review. The opinions are strictly my own.
This is a murder mystery. Genevieve is hot on the trail.
Somebody’s killing the most glamorous models in Gilded-Age New York, but intrepid Genevieve Stewart is up to the task in Kate Belli’s third Gilded Gotham mystery, for fans of Victoria Thompson and Andrea Penrose.
As a heat wave engulfs New York in the summer of 1889, the city’s top models begin turning up dead, one by one, suggesting the work of a single killer. Society girl turned investigative journalist Genevieve Stewart is drawn into the case when Beatrice Holler, one of her friend Callie’s fellow models, is found with her throat cut.
Genevieve and her compatriot, wealthy Daniel McCaffrey, are joined by Callie to seek out the suspects, which leads them to search for answers from the members of the elite, notorious gangsters, and the city's most prominent painters.
In an era when London’s Jack the Ripper murders have everyone on edge, the police want to keep the killings quiet. But the bodies are piling up as fast as the suspects—and unless the killer is found, the simmering New York summer could boil over into madness.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
I love mystery crime novels. This novel Treachery on the Tenth street was full of twists and turns and suspense until the end. It was surely a page turner which kept me guessing for the murderer from the beginning to last chapter. One would never guess the killer until you reach reading the last few chapters. A killer who is mad and called, Jack the Ripper is loose in the city, which left Genevieve doubting Bea's death was caused by - the murderer who crossed the Atlantic, the killer may be in New York. Genevieve's role at the society pages paper as a journalist had taken years to build reputation. She worked with Daniel McCaffrey and Arthur Horace was her boss editor of one of the largest newspaper in the whole city. Some one has killed three women, all artist's models, including Ida. They were found dead, their throat cut. An arrest has been made, but Daniel McCaffrey and Genevieve didn't believe the authorities have the right person. The real murderer is still out there. The suspects included Architects, Edward Paxton, Walter Wilson and Mathew Shipman. Who is the actual killer?
Callie, Genevieve's best friend joins her investigation to find the killer of the victims. Police believed the women who were murdered were mistresses of wealthy men, are expendable and they kept the murder away from public knowledge. Detective Longstreet did his best to keep the murders quiet. From upper class society woman of New York, Genevieve turns to become an investigative journalist. Very interesting and shocking to know the killer and motives of the characters. A must read for mystery book lovers.
I just reviewed the book, Treachery on Tenth Street, Thanks to the publisher Crooked Lane Books, Kate Belli and Netgalley for an advance copy for my honest review.
This series is so good! If you enjoy historical fiction and a mystery then this is perfect for you! I love Genevieve and Daniel! I can't wait for the next book in this series. Thank you so much for my copy!
I could not put this book down! An excellent mystery with some shocking turns. Genevieve and Daniel were at their best - together - and though I had a good idea of the villain throughout, the ending was still soooo satisfying.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

A Jack the Ripper copycat picking out single women in NYC in the hottest days of summer and they have tenuous connections to our main protagonists!
I had read book two, but this one would have had me doing my binge-read if I hadn't, and not because I would have felt lost but would have been so intrigued!
The publisher's blurb is a good hook so there is no need for recap and spoilers are just wrong. Fascinating characters, twisty plot, more red herrings than a fish monger, and a truly riveting story. Loved it!
I requested and received a free e-book copy from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
Love this series. Historical fiction mystery at it's finest. Great pacing and setting. Genevieve and Daniel are fantastic! Can't wait for the fourth book
I struggled to get into this one. I hadn't read any previous ones in this series, and I think that matters here. I would've enjoyed this more had I read the previous ones.
