Review of What Happens in Greece by Sue Roberts
This was a lovely easy read. Well written with great characters, set is a great location. I really enjoyed the story and it would be pefect for your summer beach read. Recommened
It is not often I genuinely laugh out loud when reading but I did when reading this. It is the perfect feel good book for anyone who has ever dreamt of running away and starting a new adventure.
Charlie and Jamie relocate to Crete to start living their dream life in the sun. But one of them doesn't settle and leaves the dream and relationship behind...
What Happens in Greece is a light hearted book guaranteed to make you eager for a summer getaway! Warning : there are lots of food descriptions so don't read while hungry!
Charlie and Jamie start the book as a united couple and share a dream of leaving rainy England behind them. They move to Crete, embracing the culture and change in lifestyle. But one of them struggles to fit in (in my opinion, they made zero effort...) and returns home leaving the other on their own.
The plot develops gradually and the break up happens over a third of the way through the book. Greek food, landscape and characters are described vividly and bring the plot to life. The ending was a little abrupt and left me wanting to find out more (I'm sure there is scope for a sequel).
Love and relationships form a major theme throughout the book relating to both the main and the peripheral characters. The romance is gentle whilst the characters stay true to themselves rather than compromising. Friendships and community are also central to the plot and the lives of the characters, allowing us to see other sides to their personalities.
What Happens in Greece will get you in the mood for summer sun.
A sweet and fast paced story set in Greece about doing what your heart desires. The story makes you want to root for the main characters success.
An enjoyable read & perfect for the summer. This book is filled with interesting characters & a good storyline; however, I did find it a little too hard to believe at times (although I realise it is fiction & anything can happen). A good story about a woman deciding to doing it herself after being dropped in it by a man. Lovely descriptions of the setting made imagining the place easy, I could almost feel the sun on my shoulders. I also found myself googling so I could see the real thing as the descriptions sounded so beautiful (pink beach Crete was my top google!).
A lovely storyline set in a beautiful place and filled with family, friends and food. Perfect summer reading by the pool. In the garden or snuggled up on a rain day.
Made me very hungry as I was reading it. Between mentions of Greek food and also baked goods, it is certainly a satisfying read, so long as you have nearby snacks.
And the setting of Crete is magnificently described. I could feel the heat of the summer, I could imagine Billy's random appearances, and generally the whole area where Charlotte has moved to, I could see so clearly.
It's a big life decision to buy a house in Crete, but it's one that really seems to be made for Charlotte. It's clear she takes to living somewhere different like a duck to water.
And I loved all the new people she meets, and friends she makes in the village.
This gave me a great hit of Greek escapism while I was in Spain on a cruise, and I loved that it made me forget where I was currently, and transported me to even further away!
Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Absolutely loved this book. Love Greece. Love Crete. Was great to read this book. Very lucky to follow your dreams. I got caught up in the book. Charlotte was a lovely character. Throwing her everything in to the move. I hope I’d be like her,
Hearing about the Greek way of life makes me so jealous. The book was very well written.
Absolutely loved this book. There isn’t a bad thing I could say about it. Loved following Charlottes life as she moved to Crete.. she really embraced life. Enjoying everything that was thrown at her.
Many women would have packed up and returned to the uk when her bf chose to return was refreshing to see her stand her ground and follow her dreams.
Lovely mix of characters.
Love this author and will definitely look out for her again
great summer read! the imagery was so beautiful and the characters were great. although the pacing got a little slow at times.
Charlie runs a cafe in Chester and is engaged to mechanic Jamie. She has a dream of living in their favourite holiday spot of Crete.
When she finds a bargain of a house online, they take the plunge and move to a village on the Greek isle. And with lots of help from the locals, they set about doing up the place and settling in.
This is a lovely read for those who want a brief escape to a spot of paradise and enjoy that Greek hospitality. But Charlie made me nervous, making so many major decisions on the fly and everything seemed to go a bit too smoothly compared to real life!
I love a good love story especially one set in beautiful Greece! Loved this book and plan on taking it to the beach with you
Reading the snippets of this book, I kept waiting for fiance to leave her and go back to where they used to live. That didn't happen till nearly halfway through the book. By then Jamie was completely likeable and very relatable...Charlie, a little less so. I admired Charlie for staying and seeing things through, even though she was missing Jamie. The descriptions of Greece and the restaurants and the markets were amazing. I had a hard time staying interested in this book at times, but then I would get into it and get lost in the Greek atmosphere. Overall very good.
Charlotte and Jamie have moved from the UK to Crete for a new life, which Charlotte embraces but Jamie end up struggling with. Will she stay in Crete without him and move on with handsome local Darius?
Great holiday read.
I LOVED this book. I mean, you could just tell what was going to happen but I still really enjoyed every page. I loved Charlie, I loved the setting and I loved the storyline. This is summer in a book for me. Would 100% recommend.
Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher, for sending me an eArc of this book!
What Happens in Greece is a light-hearted read, perfect for the summer.
Charlotte (Charlie) and her fiancé, Jamie, are stuck in a rut with their life in England. The two plan to pack up all of their things and move to village in Greece. Charlie settles into her new life while Jake ponders his decision and grows homesick. He moves back to England, and leaves Charlie to make the difficult decision of whether to stay or leave.
This story was very cute, and easy to glide through. There were a few issues with the pacing, but it was nothing too distracting. I loved the setting and the descriptions the author would feed us about Greece.
Charlie was an enjoyable character to follow, and I loved reading her perspective to view the new aspects of her life. The romance with Darius was cute, though it wasn't anything to blow me away.
I had fun with this story and gladly will tack it to my collection of summer reads.
A sweet story about a woman finding herself in Greece. I don't think I've read many books set in Greece. In fact I think this may be only the third with the first two being YA novels. I want to read more books set in Greece now. Heck I want to go to Greece now.
This book was cute. It was a quick read, but it felt a little.. flat. The characters read like you were reading someone's essay and not a rom-com, but the storyline was adorable. The ending came rather abruptly, but I guess it made sense for the type of story.
What Happens in Greece was a light and enjoyable summer read, The story is about Charlotte who moves from London to Crete to start her new life. She begins the journey with her boyfriend of four years Jamie. Jamie tries to adjust to life in Greece but misses London terribly. They part ways, and the story follows Charlotte as she carves out a new life in Greece. The cast of characters are endearing. The author paints a beautiful picture of the village and country. I enjoyed reading this book. It was a good start of summer read! Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC!
I requested this book because it had Greece in the title - I love some Greek, anytime! And I also hoped that maybe, as it's Sue Roberts' books, it will bring some so much needed joy and feeling of holidays. Lately I wasn't so lucky with Sue Roberts' books, some time ago they started to feel very simplified, on the surface and I hoped that after a short break with her books this one is going to be better.
But sadly, no. It also felt very simplified, the chapters were actually telling us, minute after minute, what the characters were doing: I woke up. Then I got showered. Then I cleaned my teeth and drank coffee. After I drank coffee I went out. Then... I mean, arrrgh, it's women's fiction, for adults, right? I don't need to read action - reaction, I don't want the problems to be solved in the next sentence, and it felt like this. The huge departure of the boyfriends "retreating back as he runs back to civilisation" (sorry? What was wrong with civilisation in Greece? I've never, for a single moment thought that he thought that he'S living on a desert) took place at 49% of the story - I had to wait sooo long to see his boring, football - obsessed persona finally going back.
The characters were also very superficial, there was no tension in the story, everything happened and was sorted out unbelievably quickly, without a sing of trouble. And I couldn't even enjoy beautiful Greece as I eventually started to skim - reading the book. It simply wasn't able to keep my attention and even Greece wasn't able to save it for me.
Sadly.
I really enjoyed this book. Having taken the step of moving to a different country I found that this was an idealised version of of relocating without any of the problems that inevitably happen along the way. I’ve also seen the dream fall apart for others and this book deals with the aftermath of this. I liked the characters and the descriptions of Greece and the Greek way of life were excellent. Highly recommended.
Another great summer read set in Greece by the fabulous #SueRoberts! Simply wonderful and filled with fun!
Thank you, Sue Roberts, Bookouture & NetGalley for my copy. All opinions are my own.
