#netgalley #whathappensingreece This is the perfect book to take on summer vacation, warm, funny, romantic and feel good. Travel to Greece. This was a beautiful an easy read 4/5 stars
Another great book by Sue Roberts. An easy read that captures the summer sun in a stunning location, fabulous as always.
2.5 rounded up
The things I enjoyed about this book were definitely overpowered by the things I didn’t.
I enjoyed:
The descriptions of the food, smells, and scenery. I’m going to Greece next year and was very excited to read a book that takes place in some of the places I’ll be visiting. It felt like I could really picture these places, without actually seeing or being there.
I enjoyed the characters that lived in her village.
I did not like:
The main character. I felt like she was annoying. I can’t explain why.
The conversations between some of the characters felt forced and like they would never occur like that. Her conversations with her fiancé felt like it wasn’t how a real person would talk with their fiancé.
The timeline of the book was weird. One paragraph they would mention something being a couple weeks away and in the next paragraph they were at the event. It just felt like an unnatural pace.
The book was very predictable - I knew she would end up with the handsome Greek man at the end.
The ending was so abrupt. I thought I had another couple chapters, but nope! It just ended, which left me feeling unfulfilled.
I didn’t find anything about this book fun or exciting. If I were moving to a place I loved as much as Charlie loved Greece, I would want to go experience everything I possibly could in my new home. It basically told of her day to day life in Greece, which in my opinion, was boring. Her neighbors were the most exciting part of this book.
The whole storyline with Lou, the previous owner of her house, was meaningless. They brought him in to tell the story of the death of his wife and then made him her gardener. I felt like someone more could’ve been done with him.
The whole description of the book seems off. For example, in the description it says her fiancé takes off and leaves her in Greece. While this does happen, it didn’t happen until almost halfway through the book and Charlotte bounced back pretty quickly.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Net Galley for a free copy to review.
I had a hard time getting through this book. I loved the premise, but none of the characters or their interactions felt genuine. Most of the conversation sounded way too proper and felt awkward even when it wasn't intended to be.
My favorite parts were the descriptions of Greece, but unfortunately they weren't enough to carry the story for me.
Buying a rundown cottage in Greece. A crazy, wine-fuelled idea, or the best decision she’s ever made?
I think so! This was so fun and the perfect summer beach read - add it to your lists immediately.
What Happens In Greece opens with Charlotte revelling in the delight of a dream come true. While the story of her life-changing move to Greece slowly unravels, the reader learns that her journey has not been as trouble-free as it seems. There is a run-down farmhouse to renovate and an intrusive goat to discourage. Her financé Jamie fails to find work as a mechanic and misses football and friends in England. After Jamie regretfully abandons their new life in the sun, Charlotte, who owned a successful coffee shop in Chester, revives an old bakery to make ends meet. Working within the community, she builds relationships with local people. This brings happiness through friendship, sorrow when she learns the history of her farmhouse and a slow-burn, on-off romance with Darius, a dishy restaurateur. There is a lot about food in this book, and it all sounds delicious. What Happens In Greece is a brilliant piece of escapism. Sue Roberts is an excellent storyteller.
I'd say this barely made the 3star marker.
Charlie decides she wants to move from gloomy Britain and buys a house in a village on Crete, where she moves with her fiancé.
During appr. 40% of the book I was bored. Unfortunately it evolved painstakingly slow. The descriptions were endless and not really giving much to the story. Also, the Greek terms didn't feel quaint at all but rather an attempt to throw in Greek as many Greek terms as possible.
The ending came upon us really really fast - I mean on one page she was by the sickbed of her former fiance and in the next (practically) she was kissing the Greek hunk (no complaints there tho ;) )
I received and ARC of this book for free by NetGalley for an honest review.
What Happens in Greece is such a great read perfect for a summer holidays. Set in gorgeous Greece and told in first person, It is feel-good fun at it's best.
This was an ok read, but to be honest was spoilt by the blurb as it isn’t just a teaser, it’s the whole storyline from start to finish. Normally the blurb covers the first chapter or 2 of what happens to make you want to read more to find out what happens, yet I found myself reading it thinking it’s going really slowly, when is something going to happen (I.e. something new not started in the blurb) yet it takes up until the last chapter for anything new to happen. The story was ok and had the blurb been different I may have enjoyed it, but it was spoilt in the same was as a film when someone tells you the whole storyline
What Happens in Greece was a delight to read from beginning to end! Author Sue Roberts writes the best books set in Greece and each time I read one I want to book a trip. She has a way with describing the scenery, the vibrant colors, the food and wine, and with this book….desserts! You just feel good reading Sue’s books, so pick one or all of them up!
Charolette and her fiancé make the scary yet exciting decision to sell their home and café and move to Crete Greece. Charlotte will miss her sister and nephew and the café she’s worked so hard on, but she feels the need to slow down. What’s the point of working so hard if you never have free time to enjoy it? The two find the perfect little home with an olive grove and the cutest couple next door. Everything seems picture perfect, until the cracks start to show.
Charlotte will need to make some decisions quickly and decide what her future looks like. Does she stay in Crete? After all it’s the most she’s ever felt like she’s at home, or head back to Chester where she has the comfort of friends and family? Only she can make these tuff decisions, and maybe not until her heart has healed.
With a Love, Eat, Pray vibe you’ll feel inspired and maybe even a little envious when reading this book. What a dream to move away to my favorite vacation spot. I’d open my own bookstore and spend my free time reading in a hammock over looking the ocean. #dreamer
If you could sell everything and move to your dream location where would it be?
Sue Roberts’ storytelling style is very much a first person POV with lots of details and thoughts included. It’s a very “personal” insider view and I live that very much so.
The author’s descriptions of the area and the food are great, so much so that I wanna move to Greece right now.
This book is a perfect, and I really mean perfect, read for summer and to be read on a beach dreaming that you, yourself, have just moved to Greece.
Once again Sue Roberts paints a gorgeous picture of Greek life, enabling the reader to feel the sunshine and taste the delicious food. It is this ability to transport the reader to Greece that I love and contrasted with rainy life in England, who wouldn't?
I do have one small niggle though; everything falls into place without any problem when Jamie and Charlotte move to Greece. Anyone familiar with Greek bureucracy knows that buying a house takes forever and it is virtually impossible for an English person to buy a car without the correct residence papers.
Artistic licence aside, I loved everything else about this book - the characters, the depiction of the cottage and the conflict that Charlotte faces where she has to decide between her old life and her new one. I think many people secretly dream of a new life in the sun and this book allowed me to indulge the dream.
Instructions: to be read in the garden with a glass of something. Repeat until finished.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'What Happens In Greece' by Sue Roberts.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Sue Roberts, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 13th May 2022.
This is the third book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'Going Greek' and 'Greece Actually' which I also recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover, its intriguing synopsis and title and its extremely talented author. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Carole Matthews, Jenny Colgan and My Mamma Mia Summer.' I am a huge fan of Jenny Colgan and Carole Matthews so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Sue Roberts and if this is half as good as 'Going Greek' and 'Greece Actually' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 43 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in England, UK 🇬🇧 and Greece 🇬🇷 . The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have actually visited England on several occasions so am looking forward to see if I recognise anywhere.
This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is Charlotte. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them.
Awww another absolutely fantastically gorgeous book Sue, Well done!!!!
This book is beautifully written and completely absorbs you in the stunning atmosphere of Greece and really sucks you in with the vivid descriptions leaving you feel the warmth of the the sun and smell of the sea. The synopsis and cover suits the storyline perfectly.
The storyline is authentic and realistic as well as easy to read and heartwarming. There was plenty of events going on throughout and it kept me hooked from start to end, I read it in one sitting while mainly sitting in the garden with the sun warming my legs at the same time Charlie was being warmed by the sun in Greece making it feel like I was there even more than Sue's evocative storytelling did. The storyline was filled with a range of emotions and was heartwarming, devastating and had love, relationships, family, friendship and history all going on in this beautiful atmosphere. It felt like a lovely break away from a rainy Wales!! I loved how the story ended and I would love to read more about the life in this gorgeous Greek village. I was absolutely devastated when I came to the end of this book as I was truly whisked away to Greece feeling the sand on my feet and looking at the stunning views. I absolutely loved the gorgeous atmosphere and the warm embrace of everyone in the village. The storyline was so heartwarming and it was such an easy and relaxing read with moments of laughter, some tension and sadness but overall happiness. It ended absolutely perfectly and I would love to see what Charlie decides to do in the end. This would make a lovely series. An absolutely gorgeous book!! I cannot wait to go on my next Greek adventure with the very talented Sue Roberts. I absolutely adored being in Greece but I also enjoyed learning and reading about Charlie's shop and meeting her neighbours and new friends who I absolutely adored how supportive they were of Charlie and all she was doing. I thought Charlie's bakery was adorable and definitely somewhere I would visit if I came across it. I thought the friendships between Charlie, Kat, Stelios and Eleni were sweet and strong friendships that I would love to have myself.
The characters were all unique with their own realistic traits, strengths and weaknesses. It was intriguing to watch Charlie and Darius's friendship grow, develop and change throughout the the storyline. It was also intriguing to see how not only Charlie and Darius's relationship change throughout the book but also Charlie's friendships and relationship with Jamie, Stelios, Eleni, Kat. Ralf, Leo, Kostas, Matty, Steph, Noah, Milly and Apollo and I loved meeting each and every one of them The friendship between the girls was beautiful and it must be amazing to have such friendships where they supported each other so much. Darius is an absolute sweetheart and such a romantic that I started falling in love with him myself. I loved the adorable dates he took her on and how he was happy to take things slow. Anyway, I best not say anymore as don't want to give anything else away for future readers!! It's just so easy talking about this fantastic book and so much I want to tell you all about but i really need to control myself!!! Needless to say I absolutely adored each and every character each for a different reason. All characters worked perfectly with the storyline and I would love to meet them again and hope to see this made into a series or even a movie!!!
Well done Sue on another absolutely gorgeous book!!! I will definitely be looking for your books any time I need to be swept off to another country!!! This is exactly why when I am looking for a romance your books are what I look for and your one of my favourite authors.
Overall a perfect light hearted, stunning unputdownable romance that will sweep you off your feet and land you in Greece.
Genres covered in this novel include Romance Novel , Humorous Fiction, Love, Sex & Marriage humour, Contemporary Romance, Humour and Holiday Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Jenny Colgan, Carole Matthews, 'My Mamma Mia Summer', Sophie Kinsella and anyone who needs a holiday!!

Another great book by Sue Roberts. An easy read that encaptures the summer sun in a stunning location.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Charlotte has a good life, friends and a fiancé who she loves. But has always had a dream, which has now come true, she’s bought a cottage in Crete and has big plans.
Jamie, her fiancé has come along with her, but it seems he’s not happy with his life there and goes back to the UK, ending his relationship in the process. But, Charlotte is still going to continue to live her dream.
So much so, that she decides to open a bakery just like she had in the UK. Having met someone who she thinks will be perfect to work with her, and in this way her dreams start to grow. Darius, who owns a business near to her bakery and is also her neighbour, both start to have feelings for each other, but she is still getting over a broken heart, so it could be a while before they realise how good they can be together, making her dream more meaningful.
I loved the characters Charlie and Darius, along with the other villagers.
Charlotte had a dream that came into existence. She purchased a cottage in Crete with big dreams. Engaged to Jamie, he willingly accompanied her. However, it soon got old for him and he headed back to the UK, breaking off their engagement. Charlie is not going to give up on her dream, however, and she continues on.
In fact, she decides to open up a bakery in Crete, much like she had when living in the UK. She had previously met someone who would be perfect working for her, and thus Charlie's dream grew even more. One more thing, and that is in the form of Darius, another business owner and neighbor. They are both quite drawn to one another, but Charlie is still nursing a broken heart. It just might only be a matter of time before the pair see how good they are together, thus making Charlie's dream take on even more meaning.
Sue Roberts always manages to write fabulous location-based books. Books that are beautiful not only in setting, but in the warm characters she develops. Charlie and Darius, as well as the other villagers where Charlie is settling, are truly ideal. This gives this book a place of home in one's heart, proving that dreams can indeed come true.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Time to get your beach reads for the summer sorted and you can't g wrong with a Sue Roberts! Greece is my spiritual home and I love reading these romances, set on various islands, and getting in the holiday mood.
This time we're off to Crete with Jamie and Charlotte (Charlie). It's a bit different to Chester where Charlie feels like they're just going through the motions, they're not really living. Everything goes well at first but then Jamie decides he's had enough and hotfoots it back to Blighty!
The locals have taken them to their hearts and Charlie knows this is her home now and she decides to stay. But when she starts to date Darius gets a bit peeved and then a tit for tat war starts. Who can upset who the most with their dates!
Chats with goats, opening her own wee bakery, finishing off her house - Charlie has her plate full and her spats with Darius gives her life some much-needed sparks.
The descriptions of the island, the people, and the foods are exceptional and you can almost taste some of the dishes I swear! I loved it and can wholeheartedly say I've not read one of the "Greek" books and been disappointed yet.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review via NetGalley.
Sue Roberts has a knack for writing light, airy romances set in Greece. I think she alone is probably responsible for the uptick in the tourism industry for Greece. The cover of this book makes you want to throw caution to the wind and book the next flight to the islands.
Charlie and Jaime move to Crete and she is thriving, except her partner of four years suddenly decides this is no longer his dream and moves back to England. Charlie opens up a bakery and immerses herself in the village community. A hunky restaurateur, Darius, shows great interest, but she holds him at bay.
I kept yelling at her to go for it, he’s a hunky Greek male, what’s not to like?
I would have preferred a more concrete ending, but then even those aren’t promised in fiction.
I really enjoyed this one, my first book by Sue Roberts.
This was read during my Bed And Book time, a light hearted read that helps to ease me to sleep away from the darkness of my thrillers during the day!
The first thing that drew me to the book was the setting at the start of the book. I also live in Chester so I loved seeing the references to the River Dee and such like. I could picture every scene in remarkable clarity!
When Charlie ups sticks to Crete, Roberts does a wonderful job of place setting, and her descriptions made me feel like I was there, and I have never before visited so I had no point of reference! Her descriptions of the food in Crete were fantastic, and I'd bet Roberts is a good cook by the way she describes the food.
The writing is okay, and very easy to read. Perfect for my evening read book.
