Reading this book was so much fun. I enjoyed the format very much. I loved how in each state there was a true crime and paranormal story. I’m not a fan of paranormal tales but some of the stories were creepy. I deducted a star because I wish they added photos of some of the people from the crime stories. I googled way too many names which took time away from my reading.
A Haunted Road Atlas was a really creative compilation! I enjoyed listening through the different stories of this book. It was really interesting, and I enjoyed the varied topics that the authors covered.
I will say I think this book is better suited for fans of the podcast, I have never listened to it and there seemed to be a lot of jokes and stories related to the fan community, so they may enjoy that piece more than a random person who picks this up. Thoroughly enjoyable!
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is brilliant. It’s sharp, smart and very very funny. It’s a sort of cross between a book on ghosts, the supernatural, true crime and travel. I really enjoyed it. It would be perfect for teenagers, just grown up enough to be cool without being too gory.
This is a cute little guide to visiting some haunts all over the U.S. I do feel that if you are not a fan of the podcasters that wrote this, it feels a little like the inside joking things go over your head, but this is a decent guide!
EM!! CHRISTINE!! Y’all did it again!
I am a huge fan of theirs and their podcast! And That’s Why We Drink has gotten me through a lot of rough times in my life. Listening to them talk about paranormal and true crime things is the best! Highly recommend their podcast.
This book though, I thought that this is the perfect travel guide to all paranormal and true crime haunts across the country. They break this down by different cities in the US and major haunts and cases that happened there. They also tell you which episode they spoke of this topic so you can listen to them go more in-depth if you would like!
I also enjoyed at the end there was a whole recommendation section for each city! So you had locations you can check out if you go to those cities! I will 100% be purchasing this when it comes out!!
5 stars!!!!
This is a very fun read although I could not work my way through it as I wanted to because of the overwhelmingly large file size which meant I could not put it on my Kindle and had to read on my computer. I have a hard time reading on the laptop, as I do most of my reading when I do not have the laptop with me, which meant I read it in fits and starts and found myself jumping around now than i would if reading in a traditional format. I did enjoy the mix of fact and fun anecdote, and the dishy little asides and commentary from the authors. I'm not a podcast fan, but the format translated well to this type of book. I will look for it once it is commercially available and can be downloaded directly, and suspect I will have a much better time reading the entire thing that way...
Paranormal + true crime?! Sign me up please!! I just couldn't resist this one - it was so dang good! In this book, Christine and Em of And That's Why We Drink podcast share stories of haunted places and true crime cases they discovered from the cities they been to during their podcast tour. I loved all the cute illustrations, fun facts, personal recommendations of ice-cream parlors and bars, haunted hotels including spooky tours, and weird places to visit in each city!
As a true crime junkie, I loved the true crime cases a tad more than the paranormal stories. Some cases are familiar to me and some are new to me like the Atlanta Ripper in the early 20th century and the case of Michael Malloy. I really loved the format of the book and think the information was presented in a really easy to read way!
In a nutshell, this was such an entertaining and informative book! I would re-read this book at some point!

Em and Chrstine bring their amazing dynamic from the podcast to this book. It's funny, charming, and incredibly interesting. I think it can be difficult to translate a podcast to a written form, but A Haunted Road Atlas does an excellent job of merging the two. You can hear the book in Em's and Christine's voices, but this book would be enjoyable even for those who haven't listened to the podcast! (You should really make them listen, though.) This may serve as a fun itinerary for a road trip or a very good guide of places you want to avoid.
A Haunted Road Atlas
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Things I enjoyed:
👻 The layout is done well and cleanly set up, with each city having its own clearly defined section.
🔪 Each section includes paranormal activity and true crime stories. It was interesting to hear the bizarre stories and sightings from each location!
👻 There’s a lot of humor sprinkled throughout the book, which kept it from being too dark and depressing. You wouldn’t ordinarily put the words “true crime” and “paranormal” with “fun” and “delightful,” but this isn’t an ordinary book! It somehow melded all of these aspects together into a enjoyably gruesome set of stories.
A few things I wished for:
🔪 I’ve never listened to the podcast the authors put out, so I was unfamiliar with several of the people or events referenced in the section introductions. I wish I’d been given a bit more background or that personal anecdotes had been chosen that didn’t need background info.
👻 Several of the stories started to blend together. I’m not sure if it was the formatting for each chapter or that many of the stories had so many overlapping similarities, but there were a few sections that felt like they dragged because of it.
A road trip through America of the creepy, and eerie. Fun, funny and historical. Perfect for horror and ghost story fans!

Review:
As a person that absolutely hates driving, I would 100% go on this road trip. It was such an interesting collection of haunted and paranormal stories from different regions of the United States. I also loved how they threw in places to eat and drink. Such a fun book!!

If you are a die hard fan of true crime (or paranormal) podcasts, this travel guide is for you! Hosts of the the popular And That's Why We Drink podcast Christine and Em revisit the cities they've traveled for shows and tell readers (or listeners - the audiobook is excellent) local ghosts and crime stories from the area. No travel guide would be complete without tips of restaurants and attractions to visit, and these are included as well.
A Haunted Road Atlas was a delightful mix of humor, supernatural and true crime. I’ve never listened to Christine and Em’s podcast, And That’s Why We Drink, but after this read I’ll definitely be checking it out. The book was well researched with the stories within its pages, and included local eateries and interesting attractions if you find yourself in a city featured here.
Even though this book was given to me courtesy of NetGalley, I will be purchasing it upon its release because this book has serious reread qualities. I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy! Thanks NetGalley for the read, it was definitely worth my time.
I don't listen to this podcast, but the premise of this book caught my eye. I loved the mix of true crime and paranormal, and it's definitely something I could see becoming a series, because there were so many spots and cases that I feel were left out. Will definitely recommend it.
I was unable to read this book as the Adobe reader only allowed me to read the contents and then it wrote
non-responsive What a pity. . I tried several times.
I was really looking forward to reading it..
Good luck with the book
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review!
This was so much fun. I am a huge fan of Christine and Em, but I was worried that this book wouldn't live up to the excitement I have for the podcast. It met all my expectations and more! I loved the short form stories, and I was over the moon about the local haunts/spooky attractions list for each place. I really liked how they really kept both Em and Christine's voices really distinct throughout the book by having list items by each person and little interjections by each person, and breaking up each chapter by the signature "paranormal" and "true crime" was a smart design choice, too. I also wasn't really sure how they were going to do the "road trip" aspect of this book but I think they made it work really well! This would be a great book for using to plan out a road trip to some spooky locations, coupled with the comedy and quips we know and love. I think having QR codes incorporated in the book will make it a good road trip companion because, if you can get this on audio one day, you could pause after each chapter to listen to the full podcast episode! I will definitely be buying a finished copy of this when it comes out to keep on my coffee table or bring on an as-of-yet unplanned road trip! I think you'll love this even if you don't know about the podcast/aren't a big fan of it! It's really well designed too--whoever did their graphic design was on it. I'm so thrilled at having gotten a chance to read this, and I think you all should keep your eyes peeled for when this beauty releases in May!
I have tried everything I could think of to download this book and even the Netgalley app wouldn't let me view this. I'm really disappointed as I really wanted to read this.
A book by the hosts of the And That's Why We Drink podcast! A Haunted Road Atlas goes across the country to locations where there is both the paranormal and true crime. At each location, Em provides a paranormal story and Christine provides a true crime one (just like the podcast). They also give recommendations for bars, ice cream shops, haunted hotels, and more! A lot of the stories here have previously been covered, so if you're looking for completely new stories, this is not that. However, if you are a fan of the podcast, or a fan of the paranormal and true crime, you will enjoy this!

If you like the podcast you’ll definitely love the book. It’s as enjoyable and entertaining as their awesome podcast, their personalities shine through.
A Haunted Road Atlas is a hilarious and spooky romp across the country from the hosts of the podcast And This Is Why We Drink. The book is divided by region and then by city. Em and Christine tell a paranormal and true crime story for each city (and offer links to podcast episodes if they have previously covered the case). They also offer recommendations for placed to get wine and milkshakes (their favorite drinks). And they give a list of other odd, haunted, or creepy places to stay, eat, and visit.
This book is right up my alley. I wish it was available on my road trip last year to the southeastern part of the states. I'm also a listener of the podcast, so I kind of knew what type of stories and humor to expect. I learned so much and had a good laugh in the process. I also really appreciated that when they would give recommendations for businesses or restaurants that they would designate which were owned by minorities and women. Personally, that would be a deciding factor in which places to visit. This book was jam packed with a lot of information, fun facts, humor, sarcasm, banter, and food. A very satisfying, quick, fun read for my morbid heart.
