"The Hike to Home" by Jess Rinker is a heartwarming and adventurous children's fiction book that takes young readers on a journey of resilience, friendship, and the power of nature. Rinker's storytelling prowess shines as she crafts a tale of exploration, challenges, and the beauty of the outdoors. The book's relatable characters and engaging plot create an immersive reading experience that resonates with young readers. Rinker skillfully captures the essence of childhood wonder and the spirit of adventure, making "The Hike to Home" a delightful read that encourages a love for nature and the joys of discovery. As the characters navigate the challenges of their journey, readers are left with a sense of empowerment and the realization that sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are those that lead us back to the heart of home.
Lin's summer isn't what she hoped for when she's forced to move with her family. But can she find "home" in this new place?
Rinker deftly combines what could be disparate and distancing plot elements: internet fame, the lack of understanding of peers, emotional distance from parents, and small town legends. A lesser book would make a mess of these elements but they fit neatly together in this one. Oddly enough, Lin's overestimation of her own wilderness and survival skills seems to be the glue that makes these elements work. Each time things fall a little more out of her control, she is also forced to face a larger issue. Some of the later plot elements push the bounds of my willing suspension of disbelief but I like the early chapters well enough to dismiss my later displeasure as more a matter of personal taste than a flaw in the writing.
