This book was an inscrutable look at a crime that bleeds from a town’s past. It brings together the search for a con man, a poem leading to a hidden treasure written by a mystery man who’s hired Cassie to find him, a young man bent on helping his grandma, and a town with a precarious history. Cassie has her work cut out for her as she finds herself on the wrong side of the law in Anaconda, Montana.
Although this story abounds with various scenarios, C.J. Box brings them all together. I can’t say as I found the events hair-raising, but it is a good PI story that can be read as a stand-alone or in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing this book for me to read and review.
Cassie Dewell is a private investigator and has been hired to find a con man who is swindling women out of millions! Her investigation involves a missing PI who was first hired to find the con man, a young man on a treasure hunt, and corrupt law enforcement. This was a fast-paced story, and I absolutely loved the ending!
Really enjoyed Treasure State. I loved the Montana setting, enjoyed PI Dewell and thought the treasure hunt was fun. This was an easy, pleasurable read involving a charismatic ne’er do well, a missing Florida PI, corrupt cops, and a sad, rich woman bilked by an opportunist.
TREASURE STATE is a mystery story by C.J. Box involving female private investigator Cassie Dewell. The setting is modern day Montana, specifically a small former mining town named Anaconda. Cassie is working simultaneously on two cases – one involves fraud and a slick operator who has stolen significant funds from her client, an older woman named Candyce Fly. The other involves a fortune that treasure seekers are competing to find. The founder of that hunt hires Cassie to see if see can find him – it is his contention that being hidden will make for a fairer contest. C.J. Box is a well-regarded author (Joe Pickett is another of his characters) and it should be no surprise that TREASURE STATE received starred reviews from Booklist and Publishers Weekly. I greatly enjoyed the audio version read by Christina Delaine. The story is intricately plotted and while there are references to previous Cassie Dewell adventures (this is number six in the series), this Montana mystery is full of its own twists and turns and works as a stand-alone.
PI Cassie Dewell is back in this novel hired by two clients. The first a wealthy widow from Florida who believes the last PI she hired took her money and ran. The second is a man who hires her to find him and with that would come the key to a treasure based on clues left in a poem in a restaurant in Montana.. The author keeps you engaged in the plot from Chapter 1 and you won’t want to put this book down. In addition, he brings Montana to life in this novel in a way that enables the reader to enjoy the beauty of the state along with the edge of your seat storyline. I highly recommend this book and the author.
Cassie is a female detective. She is also a mother, daughter, friend, and good at solving mysteries. She is hired by a wealthy lady in Florida to find the man who conned her out of money, she also needs to find the previous detective who was looking for him and has gone missing. In the meantime a young friend shows up and another mystery unfolds. There is treasure involved in this one. Can Cassie solve both these in time? This is my first C. J. Box novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the character of Cassie, her family members, and her friends. The plot is twisty and fun, a little breathtaking at times. The setting is beautiful and intriguing. I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining read. Thanks to #TreasureState#NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Cassie Dewell finds herself involved in two mysteries in the latest C J Box novel “Treasure State”. She’s been contacted by a Florida woman to find her missing private investigator, who was last heard from in Anaconda MT. At the same time a treasure hunt worth millions is going on and Cassie has been hired by the man who wrote the poem containing the clues to try to find him. Another great addition to the series - looking forward to the next!
I enjoyed this book. I have never read this author before but I watch Big Sky and enjoy it very much and wanted to read one of the books.
Treasure State is another fast-paced, engrossing mystery by C.J. Box. Cassie Dewell stars as the heroine in this ongoing series where individual books can be read as stand-alones. While I have read other C.J. Box books and thoroughly enjoyed them, this was my first one with Cassie and it was a real treat!
She is a determined, diligent, intelligent private investigator who juggles her work and a challenging family.. Cassie and the criminals play key roles as does the beautiful state of Montana while she deftly solves another set of crimes.
Thanks to NetGalley, C.J. Box, and St. Martin’s Press for this great ARC. .
Treasure State by CJ Box is the sixth book in a series about Cassie Dewell. She is a private detective in Montana and is a great main character. I have read a number of his Joe Pickett books and really enjoyed them so I jumped at the chance to read a book from this series.
Cassie Dewell is a PI who has two distinct cases that she is working on. She is balancing the detective work with her mother and son and their needs. Her mother works for her so you know it is an interesting arrangement.
One case is tracking down a smooth talker who has bilked a client out of a lot of money. Tied into that case is finding the missing PI who was tracking him down first. On top of that she is looking for a man who is sending lots of people on a treasure hunt looking for gold, at his request. The cases are interesting and how they are introduced and how Cassie works them and unravels the mysteries is very interesting.
Treasure State was an interesting read with enough action and good pacing. The main character was interesting and I liked how she worked her cases. I enjoyed Treasure State by CJ Box a lot and look forward to the next books.
C.J. Box is a favorite author of mine. I think I’ve read all of his published books! His latest offering, Treasure State, is an ambitious mystery-thriller featuring Cassie Dewell, a former police officer turned private eye in Montana. Cassie’s keen insights and the stunning landscape and history of Montana are the stars of this installment. I especially enjoyed that actual Montana locations— not just towns but even operating restaurants! - were prominently featured in the plot.
This is one of those book you read and must force yourself to stop reading in order to savor it. There is two mysteries going on at the same time that our sleuth Cassie, is working at the same time. She's moved into a new town and her plate is full dealing with cases, break ins, and a mother that is quirky to say the least. Every chapter leaves you wanting more - propels you forward as a true fiction book should.
I'll be hand selling/suggesting this all day!
The determination of the PIs in this story show what hard work, dedication and perseverance look like. It shows when you follow the rules, pay attention and have good friends you can come out on top. This book has lots of twists and turns and you are not sure where some pieces fit, but in the end everything comes together. A great book!
I recommend this book-CJ Box never disappoints. Full of action, mystery, and danger, I was on the edge of my seat while reading this one. I thought the characters were well developed and the scenes were very vivid. Excellent writing as usual.
Cassie Dewell is back! A private investigator based In Bozeman Montana, she’s been asked to find a missing PI from Florida. The reason he was in Montana is soon revealed and Cassie goes to Anaconda to find him and maybe close his case. I loved the way the author describes the landscape as well as the characters. It’s easy to picture both. I live near the settings for this book so I know the history of the “Copper Kings” and the way they operated that’s also part of this book. There’s more than one mystery for Cassie to solve. Although the perpetrator and his accomplice is known long before the end of the book, it is great to read along as Cassie gets him to admits what he did. If you’re a CJ Box fan don’t miss this book. If you’ve never read anything written by him, start with this book. It can definitely be read as a stand-alone. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions stated are my own,
Set in the beautiful country of Montana, private investigator Cassie Dewell juggles multiple cases, family dynamics and her own doubts to track down a missing man, find another man who is defrauding wealthy women and coping with people searching for an alleged hidden treasure. Face paced with intriguing characters and fascinating historical background, this is a can’t put down read.
Murder, fraud and treasure hunting take center stage in Treasure State, a fast-paced and entertaining novel focused on exploring the lengths people will go to in the quest to obtain a financial windfall. C.J. Box has crafted another intriguing and enjoyable story sure to please fans of the Cassie Dewell/Big Sky universe.
Cassie Dewell receives a mysterious call from an individual with an unusual request - they want to hire her to see if she can find them. You see, this person is responsible for the biggest treasure hunt in the United States and wants to ensure his identity is protected to make sure whomever finds the treasure does so on their own merits by figuring out the clues in the poem that started it all. So if Cassie, an excellent private investigator, can’t find them then they will rest easy knowing their identity will remain secret. Meanwhile Cassie takes on another case to track down an accused con artist who loved and left a wealthy widow, disappearing with millions of her money and leaving her heartbroken. A case made dangerous by the fact the prior PI hired by the woman has gone missing. Which means Cassie will need to be extra vigilant to avoid the same fate.
The dichotomy of the two main plotlines is very well-done and makes for a compelling read. By having two simultaneous cases for Cassie to explore and switching back and forth between the amusing treasure hunt investigation and the treacherous search for the confidence man, Treasure State expertly balances moments of lightheartedness with tension. Which seems like a proper way to highlight the variability of cases undertaken by a private investigator and is a breath of fresh air from thrillers that solely focus on ratcheting up the tension from start to finish.
The big question is…will the storylines from Treasure State make their way into the television series Big Sky? There’s a lot of good stuff in this novel that would adapt well to the small screen and hopefully we’ll see it happen in a future season. But for now, enjoy it in book form because it’s another stellar and engaging book from C.J. Box.
I love this series and reuniting with Cassie is always a delight! I enjoy a good female detective series and this one has a picturesque setting. The setting descriptions are vivid and written so beautifully- a true love story to Montana. The supporting characters are always so interesting. I loved this complex case and was riveted from the beginning. 3.5 ⭐️
I've read all of C. J. Box's books but this will definitely be my last. I found his use of characters to make fun of people wearing masks and ridiculing people who are afraid of getting covid intolerable and I was so angered by this insensitivity that it overshadowed the plot. For the many who've lost loved ones to covid or are suffering from long term effects, his writing is insulting and hurtful. Our country is incredibly divided right now thanks to the likes of Mr. Box and his rhetoric. This is a shame because otherwise he is not a bad writer.
I love this series with Cassie & this is another great addition. Cassie not solves a case involving a con man; but helps an old friend with a treasure hunt. Super fun & fast read.
