If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe feels like Everything, Everywhere All at Once and Edge of Tomorrow filtered through the trademark dick jokes and general absurdity that we've come to expect from the John Dies at the End series. This story has a lot of moving parts, but Pargin manages to avoid making it feel overly complicated or contrived. When all the seemingly disparate puzzle pieces start to come together at the end, it results in a satisfying ending
Too scary for me. I don’t really do paranormal stuff and I could not get though this book. I am sure it’s great for those that like this genre but it was just not for me.
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I fully admit I didn't realize this was part of a series when I picked it up. However, it could easily be a stand-alone and there's not a lot that left me questioning or feeling like I was left out because they explained everything as if they were connecting to previous stories.
However, the actual meat of the book was just okay. It could have been maybe 1/3-1/2 less and gotten the same story across. The action got repetitive and the "twists" were pretty easy to figure out.
When I first started If This Book Exists,, You’re in the Wrong Universe by Jason Pargin aka David Wong I had no idea what to expect but all I can say after finishing it is...whoa, what a ride! Or to quote the title of another book in the series What Did I Just Read! This is the fourth book in the series but the first I’ve read and I’m wondering now why it took me so long to discover this series because I loved every weird and creepy word of it.
Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review
This was an absolute triumph and a wild ride! A very worthy entry in the always entertaining John Dies at the End series. Author Pargin has hit a stride of nonstop hits with his last few books and this one is absolutely no exception.
DNF. I think I'm too far removed from this series for it to maintain my interest anymore. Kind of want to go back and read the whole series and finish this someday, but just can't do it right now. It's not gripping me.
Some people have said you can jump right in to this one without reading the other 3 books in the series, but I think you should read them first. It’s a lot to be thrown into.
Quirky, paranormal, fun, humorous horror. Not much else I can say that hasn’t been said before about this one!
Well, obviously, this book exists. I'm glad to be in the wrong universe if it means I get to read more JDATE books. Always hilarious, and deeply weird.
good book and really enjoyed the characters and their journey. I liked the romance.. I enjoyed how the characters grew in the book and what happened.
Funny. Thought provoking. Creepy. Thrilling.
The way I was so invested in every character. Every storyline. Every change. This was my first book in the series (I didn’t realize it was a series), so I read it as a stand alone. I really didn’t feel like I missed much aside from possible character development. I loved it! Thankfully, the afterword helped reassure me that I didn’t need to read the first books in the series to follow along.
I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Huge thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!
Where to start? This title was a bit of a rough read for me. I went into this only know a little about the story and not realizing it was linked to other books. I am also not familiar with the author. Well, wow. I was pleasantly confused at time, hit in the face with some pretty crass humor and satire, while uttering WTF on occasion. I think a little prep work on my part would have helped. I really liked the book and will check out the others. The characters are interesting, the story is fast paced and in your face, and the overall feel is just crazy. What a rollercoaster of an adventure.
I really tried to like this one but it was just not for me. I couldn’t wrap my head around what I was reading and DNF it at 53%.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Just as fabulous as the rest of the series! There are a lot of good one liners in this one.
John and Dave always have a blast when trying to save someone or the world. But this time it is all about a toy that a cult worships.
It did take me quite awhile to get into this one. It was a bit too lengthy. I think cutting down of the pages would have made this a more pleasant book to read. As always, the banter is awesome. I think it would be a blast to hang out with these two!
Thank you #NetGalley and #StMartinsPress for sending me the ebook. I enjoyed this one!

If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe is the fourth book in the John Dies at the End universe. And it is a wild, witty, nerdy and thoroughly intellectual ride!
Dave, John and Amy are authentic ghostbusters with The Conjuring worldview. They are trying, and failing, to control an inhuman toy hungry for human body parts. Oh, did I forget to mention that the book is a zany comedy? It’s a merging of a good Saturday Night Live skit and an Annabelle plot with a Tim Dorsey full-on-crazy writing style. If any of those are favorites of yours, don’t miss this laugh-out-loud—but ponder late-at-night—book. 5 stars for If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe! And I’m happy that I’m in the wrong universe.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.
In typical John and Dave fashion, this book is an intergalactic maelstrom of insanity, bent quantum mechanics, trans-dimentional monsters, and an evil toy. And I'm here for it.
These are usually known for their dark Fantasy, horro-esque qualities, and 'This Book...' is no different. But the writing here was actually really well executed! Rather than a series of odd, if slightly connected Pratchet-Like anecdotes, we have a sustained plot without much veering off, and an actually super complex timeliness that pretty much maintained its integrity.
Alas, this also marks the passing of David Wong as an author.... but mayhap Jason has stepped it up a notch! Great job!
great story. I had not read the previous "John Dies at the End" books, but this was easy to pick up and get engrossed in without having to know the backstory for sure. It was definitely funny in a Douglas Adams type way, and wacky as well. The story was interesting and pertinent, and I really enjoyed the story a lot. I have read small articles by Pargin before, and respected his work, so knowing that this book was written by him [not under his pen name David Wong for this book]. The story follows our friends through a tale that involves a Tamagotchi like creature that ends up eating real human body parts, cults, and other interesting plot lines. However, it becomes clearly very real life pertinent regarding the young man in the store, Bas', relationship with his sister and his family life. The story was well-written, fun, but also an easy and engaging read.
Great spooky season book!

DISCLAIMER
I am not reading this book.
I was all sorts of stupid excited when I saw the fourth John Dies at the End book on NetGalley.
I squealed so loudly my kid thought he would have to call the EMTs when I got my approval for the advanced copy.
Then I started to panic.
I can't possibly read the ARC.
I have to have it "for real" in my grubby little hands.
Even worse?
I have to have it matching the rest of my Pargin/Wong collection on my shelf ...
which means paperback ...
which means an even longer wait.
It will certainly be worth the wait, though. I already know that it will be one of the top reads for whatever year I end up finally reading it in. I'm hoping it's a fast turn-around for hardcover to paperback release so I'm thinking 2023. As soon as it's listed on Amazon I'm hitting that pre-order button faster than you can say "Soy Sauce."
So, my dear disappointed readers, that's that.
It is, however, Tuesday (and the release date to boot) so I can still leave you with the typical Tuesday Intros & Teasers.
The Intros because, being Pargin, there are multiple starts before the "actual" story begins.
The Teasers were a bit more difficult to come up with since, you know, I am not reading this book. I opted to send my kid a text message telling him to pick five numbers between 10 and 85 so I could then just go to the random corresponding percentage and pick a random blip without spoiling too much for myself ... or for you, of course. I'm not telling you the numbers that he gave me. Or even if the blips are in chronological order. You'll have to read the book to figure that out yourself.
Another hilarious adventure in the JDATE saga. I look forward to each installment because I know it's are going to make me laugh out loud. This was such a fun read and a new and interesting take on the multiverse (for once!). John and Dave are seasoned veterans of all things weird at this point and I love how they just roll with the punches - when you're hired to investigate the bizarre and unexplainable, you do it! It's really difficult to provide a synopsis that does the book justice without divulging too much. You're best off just reading it for yourself! My only complaint is that I wish Jason Pargin wouldn't make us wait so long for the next book but I think the time he spends crafting a truly entertaining story makes it worth the wait.
I have not read any of the previous books by this author, but as it says in the author's note at the end, it wouldn't have helped with any of the confusion I'm feeling now. I fully loved this wild ride of a book. It took me a little longer than normal to finish it because I wanted it to have my full attention without any distractions. I still did get confused during parts of it, and I struggled to keep some of the events that were happening straight in my mind. But I still thoroughly enjoyed this, and I can't wait to read more from this author!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend everyone read this!
Another twisty adventure from my favorite team of misfits. Once again they fail their way to a sort-of-success. I feel like some things were hinted at that will hopefully be picked up in the next book.
