Survival Of The Fastest by Randy Lanier was not what I was expecting. Sometimes when you read a memoir, or tell-all book, it can be a bit slow. Let me just say that this book read as fast as Randy Lanier drives! I sat down and read this in less than 8 hours!! It was non stop action from start to finish! Randy Lanier, race car driver, weed smuggler and now author, what a ride his life has been!
As much as I loved reading about his life, what I really loved was the mentions of Road Atlanta. Road Atlanta is essentially in my backyard. On days when the Petit Le Mans is running, I can hear the cars from my back porch. And during the 80's when Randy Lanier was racing there, my husband was there as well. That is where the pictures I have posted with this book, came from. My late father-in-law, used to take my husband out there when he was a kid, and he still talks about it to this day. In fact when I pulled these pictures out, he was able to point to the cars and tell me the drivers. He remembers the Whittingtons as well.
As you can see, this book brought back a lot of memories for me, and I enjoyed getting to know and understand a little bit more about Randy. 4⭐
Thank you to Hachette Books, NetGalley and Randy Lanier for the #gifted copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Once I picked this book up I could not put it down. An absolutely riveting story of one of the most prolific marijuana smugglers in history who also happened to have an equally incredible career as a race car driver. In fact, I'm not sure anyone accomplished more behind the wheel in such a short amount of time. Everything in this book is absolutely true but if you told someone it was fiction they'd say it was a little too far-fetched and to tone it down. For all the fast cars and bundles of cash, it's also a story of humanity and redemption that gains extra relevance now as the laws (and public opinion) toward marijuana are changing.
