Paige, a recently single librarian, meets James, a Scot visiting Michigan for his art residency. The book takes us through the pair's instalove story as the two fall head over heels for each other, but are held back by the fact that James is only in the city temporarily.
The story was a fun and quick read which I enjoyed for the most part. My only issues really lay with the way the author depicted James' Scottish accent, which at times felt forced, and the constant reminder of the ginger goatee (which I personally did not want to think about).
Thank you to Netgalley & Xpresso Book Tours for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The only critique I would have about this book would be that they jammed down our throats that Paige was a librarian & lived in the midwest! The Scottish accent was hard to understand at times too.
Overall, I thought this book was super cute & wholesome!
This novel had two of my favorite things: library setting and a sweet romance! I loved that one of the main characters was a Scotsman and the other a librarian. Their differences complimented each other and kept me engaged in the plot. The story was a joyful and satisfying read.
My only critique is there is a lot of dialog in some of the chapters and not much descriptive setting of the scenes in advance of it. The dialogue made those chapters feel slowed and a bit underdeveloped at times. Overall this is a delightful page-turner that is perfect to unwind reading with at the end of a long day.
Got an ARC of this, thanks to @netgalley. Based on the title, I thought this was going to be spicy. It turned out to be a really sweet, endearing romance. It’s fade-to-black scenes which can be frustrating, but I did genuinely care about the main characters and their happy ending.
Super cute and cozy!

Paige, a recently single librarian looking for a promotion, meets James when he asks for a library card. Unfortunately (or fortunately), he is visiting Michigan for 8 week from Scotland for an art residency, so he is not eligible for a card. So Paige, wanting to milk as much time with him as possible, offers to let him use her card.
What follows is an instalove tale where both learn that maybe the future doesn't have to look like they've always imagined. Timelines for life events aren't real, people grow and change and so do their dreams, and love doesn't have to be hard.
I found all of the characters likable. I love Paige's friend and her husband. They are the ideal friends, but they also have the life that Paige assumed she would have by this point. And it serves as a good reminder that life is about the journey, not the destination.
*formal review on my blog in the next week
Paige is working as a library clerk in a Michigan town. During one of her shifts a gentleman walks in, and with his accent, it was obvious he’s not a local. His name is James and he’s from Glasgow, Scotland, who is in the United States doing an artistry program/residency. Paige and James hit it off right away. This is a beautiful story of the two adults connecting with and learning a great deal about each other.
The title of this book is what instantly drew me in. My dad’s side of the family is Scottish, and I love books, so the combo together seemed perfect. The author does a phenomenal job of portraying James, right down to the Scottish accent in written text (like nae and o’). I fell in love with Paige and James and their story. I didn’t want to put the book down! Like my previous read, this was another heartwarming, fun story.
This was cute, fast to read and fast to fall in love with the characters like the characters did themselves!
DYAN YOU SUCK!
I just wanted to put that out there, and now we can begin… I thought from the beginning that the story was flowing really well, with quite a powerful and driven lead, knowing what she wanted. Paige's parents were completely adorable side characters that reminded me of drinking hot chocolate on a really cold day(I don't know why they did, don’t ask). I also think Kayla was a very cute and kind side character.
I read a review before reading that said that the MMC’s accent was written very strangely and I'm a bit disappointed to admit they were right. Things like ‘dinnae’ for ‘didn’t’ and ‘caird’ for ‘card’ really irritated me and I felt they were just a bit unnecessary . Also, time crunch romances(where one or both characters have to leave at the end and this is known from the beginning) always stress me out because even though I know there’ll be a happy ending, what if there’s not? so i was quite stressed out reading this, but aside from that i thought it was really good.
Super cute ending that made me smile a ton. Paige and James deserve the whole world.
4 stars overall, and I'd recommend it to anyone who will listen.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
This was a charming and simple read. Paige had just ended a long-term relationship and is trying to land a full-time librarian position when James walked into her library. James is an artist in residence from Michigan, and they instantly hit it off. I am not the biggest fan of insta-love romances, so that part of the story was not my favorite. I also got a bit annoyed with how James' accent was conveyed. It was a little over the top at times. But it was a fun and quick story that was enjoyable to read.
Paige is a librarian and in her late 20s, she was ready to build a family just like her best friend but life has not been going the way she wanted because she just dumped her long term boyfriend because he was a commitment-phobic and she wants her librarian job to be permanent.
One afternoon an unexpected Scottish hottie 🤭 came to her desk to collect information about the library card and the way he pronounced the word Paige was instantly attracted to him the way he talked his unique way told her he was definitely not from here😍💞.
James was a Scotsman who hailed from Glasgow and he was an artist in residence. He came here for his passion for woodcraft and wanted to make changes in his life and wanted to get away from home for some time so he come here for 8 weeks for this residency job.
When James and Paige met that was a click and a new feeling for both of them they were quickly attracted to each other and the feeling was a roller coaster for them, a new experience..
This is a beautiful summer love story. They were so good to each other like they made for each other💞.
I love the book cover as much as I like the book😍.
Thank you, NetGalley this book in exchange for an honest review.
A Michigan based librarian meets a Scottish artist who's only in town for a couple of weeks.
I feel so corny. But as a book lover, I really like to read about other book lovers. So, it was very easy for me to get into this book. Booklover + booklover = instant magic. This was helped due to the writing. The writing style was easy and felt natural. Though it did take me a bit to get into the Scottish accent. That having said, I think this book would be great as an audiobook and having someone portray James with a real Scottish accent.
The main characters Paige and James were easy to love. I could connect easily with Paige and James had me swooning every other page. I would've liked to get to know James a little bit better as an individual. Now he really felt too good to be true sometimes and I would've liked a bit more dynamic to his characters.
The romance was sweet and wholesome. It's definitely a feel-good read. I think this is a perfect read for people who like to read romance novels, but prefer to skip the dirtier parts. I did however feel a little bit conflicted about the pace of the romance. The story takes place in about 8 weeks. Sometimes it felt a bit unrealistic for two people to fall head-over-heels with each other as quickly as Paige and James did.
Overall opinion: great, easy-to-read romance book. Guaranteed wholesome feelings at the end.
Rating 4/5
This story was bland. Nothing too much happened. I felt like a friend was telling me about their new romantic interest, or I was reading someone's diary. I guess there was a little conflict but for two late 20/30 somethings it seemed like something they should be able to work out for true love. I honestly couldn't wait to be finished with it.
Scotsman in the Stacks was bogged down with too much detail and not enough emotional development. James is pretty swoony, but there was a real lack of chemistry between the two, even their banter felt stiff. There was very little angst considering they thought their relationship would end in eight weeks. In general, this story is not bad but not exciting or refreshing.
Paige is a librarian trying to prove that she deserves a promotion by revitalizing the library’s reading group. James is a Scottish man in town on an art residency with a love for reading. Could there be a better match?
This was a super cute read! The affection between James and Paige was very sweet and believable. I also appreciated that they were both working on finding their way in the world and establishing themselves in their careers. It felt like a very realistic situation for two characters in a romance novel! Obviously, this book being about books/book lovers was definitely a plus.
My only issue is that the written Scottish accent was sometimes distracting to read but I think this would be a wonderful audiobook with the proper narration.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a cute and quick romance read with some sweet characters!
Thank you to NetGalley and 8N Publishing for the advanced reading copy!
Scotsman in the Stacks is a cute book about a librarian, Paige, who knows she is looking to settle down, especially after her last boyfriend dragged her along for six years. I always like to check out books that have a bookish theme and this book had that in spades. Not only is Paige a librarian, the love interest is a Scotsman with a love for books.
This is a closed door, friends to lovers, romance which was really cute. I did find the book a little "insta-lovey" for me, but that is personal taste. I did think that Alana Oxford did a great job of evoking emotion in this book. I loved James and Paige's romance and how close they became. Even more, I loved how kind James was to Paige and how much he lifted her up. I will say that the plot is quite predictable, but that made is a quick and easy read.
I really appreciated Alana Oxford's description of Michigan, especially her descriptions of the upper peninsula. She made me long for warm days on Lake Huron.
Overall, I would recommend this book if you are looking for a quick, cute read. I look forward to checking out Alana Oxford's books in the future! Thank you to NetGalley and 8N Publishing for an advance copy. All opinions are 100% mine.
I was immediately drawn to the color and style of the cover. I absolutely adore the cover art and the colors. Then I read the description and it sounds like such a sweet romance with all my favorite things. A big man with a sexy Scottish accent and a sweet librarian. A book about books! I’m all in. Thank you!
This is the story of Paige, who spends her days as a librarian in Michigan. She recently left her dead-end relationship when suddenly a sexy Scotsman waltzes into her library and knocks her life back on axis. This is a sweet friends to lovers romance that will warm your heart.
If you’re into sappy sweet Hallmark movies, which I totally am, then you’ll adore this book. If you’re from Michigan, you’ll love all the cities and shops mentioned. I’m giving this a 3 star review because it was a sweet book but I was missing some spice or adventure. There was no character conflict. It was simply an adorable romantic story.

A cute librarian read.
Paige is a newly single woman working at a library. She soon meets James, a handsome Scotsman who is in town for a while. The two quickly hit off. Soon Paige is left with a big decision to make. Should she pursue her career or take a chance on love?
This was a fun contemporary read for anyone. It was not my favorite. I did not really care for the character of James. Although I am sure others will enjoy this Librarian contemporary novel. I would possibly recommend this novel to friends and family.
Paige is facing down her thirtieth birthday - and things aren't going great. She has just ended a six-year relationship with a commitment phobic man, the rent on her apartment is going up astronomically, and she hasn't yet secured a full-time job as a librarian. She's feeling defeated and not sure of what her future holds when she meets James. James is in Ann Arbor from hi native Scotland for an artist-in-residence program. James is only n town for 8 weeks - and it is his first time away from home in Glasgow. He's exploring a life away from the family business in boat tours and giving himself a chance to explore his options as an artist.
Paige isn't looking for temporary - but she and James are so strongly drawn to each other she can't bring herself to turn him away. James is extremely sweet - and clearly doesn't have temporary feelings for Paige. So even though things move quickly in their relationship - you can feel the permanent connection.
For those that care about things like this, the book has entirely closed-door sex scenes. It is also a true love letter to Michigan - and I really liked that about it! I didn't have super strong feelings about the book or the characters in it tho - so as a result it was just ok for me. Th connection and hook just wasn't there for me. I would recommend it as a sweet, summer fling goes the distance book.
I received this as an ARC via NetGalley, but these opinions are all mine.
Scotsman in the Stacks was a fun friends-to-lovers romcom and quick read. I finished this in one afternoon. The story follows Paige, a librarian, and James, an artist, who is in the US from Scotland for an art residency. I found the Scottish accent difficult to read at times. A great story of friendship, love, and doing what makes you happy.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. This is the perfect summer romance and beach read.
I really wanted to love this story. Unfortunately, it fell a little short for me. The main characters, James and Paige, were likable but not extraordinary.
James was sweet and kind, artistic and thoughtful, but lacking the kind of strong dominance that I personally prefer in a male lead character.
Paige was relatable but relatively dull. I feel like she was stagnant throughout the book minus a few moments of courage.
The story has real potential, but it would need more a pronounced conflict and stronger dialogue.
If you are looking for a fade to black Hallmark style book, Scotsman in the Stack might be for you.
