This story is about librarian Paige whose long term relationship ended. She wants to get married, have kids, and get the full time librarian job at work. James is a Scottish artist spending the summer in Detroit for a residency. When the two meet there are instant sparks, but Paige knows that she is looking for long term so initially turns him down because who wants a summer fling?? Thankfully they figure it out.
The chemistry between these characters was excellent! They were both lovely people with believable issues in their life and it was lovely to see them together. Where the book lost some stars for me is by focusing on so many other things and not their chemistry! The book felt like it was commissioned by the tourism board of Michigan with its long descriptions of the various places they visit.
Overall the book was a sweet closed door romance with great chemistry, it was just too wordy about things that had nothing to do with the central story.
I was given a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the premise of this book, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to keep me engaged. I read 25% of the book and then abandoned it.
This book was a nice fun read with a cute plot but wasn't something super deep or gripping. I felt it was very much a book akin to a hallmark christmas movie which isn't bad - just know that's what you're getting into! I'd recommend to a friend for a nice light beach read.
This was a fun romance, but the lack of true conflict made it a little boring. Very much a hallmark movie in a book. The characters were sweet and all likable, but seemed very one dimensional. It was a sweet story, but lacked any real “meat”.
Scotsman in the Stacks by Alana Oxford is truly a love letter to Michigan in the form of a sweet story about Paige, a librarian fresh from a long relationship that went nowhere, and James, a Scottish artist in town for the summer. Normally I don’t fall for the friends to lovers, but they have such a unique situation and it’s beautiful to watch as they begin as friends and transition to lovers. I also truly enjoyed the descriptions of all the places they explore and can see a Michigan road trip in my future.
This book was so cute! I really enjoyed how Paige was able to show James Michigan and all it has to offer. I feel like most books like these are set on the East or West Coast, so the Midwest was a great change. I also really like how we could assume the conflict that was going to happen, but then it does happen but in a different way. This was a fun and fast read.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
After a getting out of a long-term relationship that wasn’t going anywhere, Paige is determined to find a man not afraid of commitment. She’s a librarian working toward a full-time position when the Scottish man of her dreams walks into her life. Devastatingly, he’s only there for 8 weeks for an art residency and she feels she’s back to square one. Luckily, she gives love a chance.
I really struggled with this one. There was no heat between the lovers. I’m fine with closed door romance but just saying “she kissed him passionately” doesn’t really spark anything for me. There needs to be build-up and I didn’t get that.
Also, there’s just no climax or anything. It just coasts along, everyone loves each other and is supporting. The dialogue is boring. All the characters are just constantly saying how kind and loving and brave and etc. Where are the faults? I learned a lot about Michigan and went on an unexciting road trip. When they go to her friends house, it says something like “we all talked and then we played games and left”. Ok, where’s the banter that comes with the competitiveness of playing games? I want to know more about that! Not about where I can get the tiniest ice cream in Michigan. And don’t even get me started on the ridiculousness that is the neck tattoo!
If you enjoy sickly sweet fluff, this is probably your jam. If you want to feel something when you’re reading (laughter, joy, tension, heartbreak before a swoon-worthy happily-ever-after), I recommend looking elsewhere.
Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC.
I wanted to read this because of the title and the cover. Too bad the story didn't live up to my expectations. I almost DNF'd this, it was so boring. Was it supposed to be a romance? Because there wasn't any. The main characters were more like friends/siblings with little to no chemistry. They're in their late twenties, for Pete's sake, who at that age isn't looking for a fun fling? Why does everything have to be "I want to get married and have babies" and nothing less than that? Who, under 70 years old, says "my dear"?
Was it supposed to be a travel guide to Michigan? It worked better as that, than anything else. The side characters did nothing to help move the story along, and except for the best friend, you could have done without any other characters and not missed anything. And who the heck is able to live in an apt alone with only one part-time job? Completely unrealistic.
This was a super adorable bookish romance! I absolutely loved the dynamic between the main characters, as well as the complicated relationship that each of them have with commitment and trust. The development from friendship to romance felt really natural and real, and I think that a lot of people would enjoy this book!
Paige the Michigan librarian has broken up with her boyfriend of 6 plus years. Luckily a handsome Scottish man named James wanders into the library and into her life. In my mind, I cast James very easily as I have been watching Outlander - I could also hear the Scottish accent as well. This a sweet romance and is very PG which is refreshing. I'd define it as a good beach read that warms your heart and makes you smile.
This sweet, clean RomCom releases mid-June.
Paige is a librarian who has just broken up with her long term boyfriend. She had all but written off finding a man and settling down. That was until James, a art student visiting for the summer from Scotland, wandered into her library.
She knows James is only in town for a few weeks, but she can’t help but fall for him and all his wee charm.
Super cute story!
It was the first time reading this author and I enjoyed the writing style and the characters.
Paige is a librarian in Michigan and she meets James, a Scotsman spending eight weeks there for an art residency.
I really liked how Paige and James hit it off as friends, and how her friends also welcomed him.
I would have liked an epilogue with more to the ending, as a sort of full circle to Paige's opening chapter.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Thanks to NetGalley for this early read.
Accents and library books? Count me in! This was such a fun and cute read. I wish I could give half stars because this was more than average. I sped through this romcom about a part time librarian who meets a mysterious stranger and together they find strength to do the hard things in life.
I’ve never been to Michigan but now I know at least a handful of places I need to go visit. Her descriptions were lovely. There was a great blend of tension and fluff and passion. With a tiny baby mixed in.
I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
This is a sweet romance set in Michigan between a heartbroken librarian and visiting Scotsman. Bonus ( like the bookmark that comes with botm book) is local girl’s tour to Michigan. The MCs are going through tough times and help each other grow….and they are super sweet and their romance is super sweet. If you are in mood for uncomplicated read, this is for you.
A rom-com with no drama, who knew! This was a great little read. I recommend this book for anyone looking for a light romance
Thank you @netgalley and @alanaoxford for an advanced copy of Scotsman in the Stacks.
This was the cutest, sweetest, romcom. Paige and James’s story will melt your heart and make you laugh and cry.
The love at first sight and the lengths they are willing to go to make it work is heartwarming.
If you love sweet light reads without any drama you’ll want to grab this one when it comes out!
we love a redhead with a sexy Scottish accent! James gives Jamie Mackenzie vibes and I am so here for it. This story was a cute, insta-attraction book and I enjoyed it! I loved that Paige was a librarian and loved how her and James interacted. My one complaint is I didn't really feel like her and best friend had any chemistry - their conversations felt forced.
I really wanted to like the book. The premise was everything I was looking for but for some reason I wasn't as pulled in. The MC was okay, honestly felt a bit annoying at times. Especially in the first 75 pages. I think the author has potential and I would read more from her but this book wasn't it for me.
I gave this book 3.75/5 stars!!
This was a really cute read for the most part! I loved seeing Paige realise her worth and independence! Paige and James' relationship was adorable and I loved seeing them helping each other and still falling in love. Her knowing what she wanted (and needed) in a relationship after her breakup was great to see, I loved that she didn't let the prospect of James change her priorities. I loved Kayla and Eric too!! The only thing that bothered me about this book was some of James' dialogue was hard to understand because of the Scottish accent.
Despite that, this was still a lovely quick read that made me love the characters and made me laugh! I would definitely recommend, thank you to the publishers for the ARC :)
I loved the idea of this book (love the cover too!), but sadly it just wasn't for me. I didn't really enjoy the MC Paige, and while I loved that James was Scottish, it felt like he was too perfect?
I did like that it was a quick story without the usual rom-com drama, and that the characters are late 20's, but felt like something was missing!
Thanks to NetGalley for the arc!
