This had so much potential.
I was immediately in love with the title and blurb but a little disappointed with the actual story.
Overall, this was a cutesy read. A little disappointing because the main characters, Paige and James were a bit bland and I cringed too many times during their interactions. I barely registered the side characters and the book felt pretty simple but sweet. Also, instalove? Not my thing.
I just wanted it to end, is that wrong?
After about 60% and even before then the characters just said small things that just set me off until about 85%ish where I was just done. Like what are you doing.
The HEA was happy for me because I was happy it was over.
If you asked me a single thing about this book I could not tell you, I don't even remember a characters name or why I was angry.. My brain is trying to protect me for a reason.
Scotsman in the Stacks had so much promise, but it just missed the mark slightly for me. I didn't really get much depth from the characters, and there was zero tension throughout the book. I really dislike the biological clock element, and it felt jarring serious and came across as immaturity. Slight spoilers, but the HEA felt beyond inevitable. I just wanted a bit more. Great plot idea, great setting, but not enough to stand out.
I have to say Scotsman in the Stacks is what a few librarian's dream about meeting a handsome guy at the library who loves books. But then reality sets in and they realize it really wouldn't. And while for the most part to me I'm a library assistant this is pure fiction it's still nice to dream. And get lost in the story, because even though I find this one hard to believe I still got lost in the story.
This is a solid 3.5 stars, but first I want to thank NetGalley and 8N Publishing for a chance to read an ARC in exchange for a review. Scotsman in the Stacks is a super adorable read. Set over a summer in Michigan the details of the surroundings was beautiful and really set the ton. I adored the characters and enjoyed reading this book; however, there was one scene at around 85% that just completely infuriated me. I won’t give spoilers, but it did take me out of the story and make it hard to continue.
So I had started this a while back when I was sick and had to catch up on arcs then decided that t had potential and I wanted to. continue it... I guess I never did. I tried to pick it up again last night and to be honest it just doesn't hit the vibe check and I am not as. interested to the plot as I would like to be.
Thank you so much netgalley for the e-arc of this book.
As someone who has spent the last decade working at a library and fantasizing about Scotland this was the perfect read. This was a sweet, quick read that had me grinning from ear to ear the entire time! I loved the cast of characters and the setting of Michigan. But most of all, I could tell while reading that Oxford is a regular in her library because she nailed it. Libraries are rarely about books anymore and every library worker has stories. I think that this book breaks the stereotype of libraries the best most honest way possible!
This book started off a little slow for me but I ended up really enjoying it. Who wouldn’t love a book about a Scotsman?! This is an easy read that’s great for when you want to e joy a book without having to think very hard.
This was a sweet and fun rom com! I really enjoyed the romance between Paige and James, but I found I wasn't overly attached to them by the end of the book - I would have liked a little more depth in the story and relationship. Regardless, this is a cute and easy read. A big thank you to NetGalley for providing the review copy!
Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was a sweet romcom but it just never grabbed my attention. The story follows Paige, a librarian who is working hard to find her path after a breakup. She soon meets James, an artist visiting from Scotland, and they fall in love as they both navigate their careers. I didn't connect well with Paige who felt very focused on finding a husband (because her "biological clock was ticking"). I also didn't feel the connection and chemistry between Paige and James. I found the dialogue hard to get through and overall a story that was a little boring.
I think I expected more from this book.
I love books, I love libraries, I love Scotland. I still cound not love the protagonists of this book: Paige from Michigan and James from Scotland.
It is a nice, slow-burning romance, quite one-directional. I missed real depth to the characters, or an actual drama - it was just going ahead with the same level of energy from start to finish. Having read from the author, it was probably intentional, but ... I don't know ... it still felt wanting. Escaping from the horrid reality of the Covid years, 2 people who actually find love and can spend time together is pleasant but people in this age want more from books than to be just pleasant.
Oxford's writing style feels a bit didactic, a bit too teacherish for me. It was still a nice enough read, a gentle ride, giving some insight into modern day library pond-life. I swear the most interesting character was the freaky pervert library patron from whom Paige needs to hide.
This one fell flat for me. I was super excited because I love Scots and of course who wouldn't love a book with a librarian?
This was just really boring and I felt like there wasn't much chemistry. I didn't connect with the characters or story at all. The writing got really annoying when it came to James. I've read other romance novels with Scottish men and it was never as annoying as this.
I'm so sad I didn't like it! I had high hopes for it. The cover is really cute though. 😬🤷🏻♀️
Thank you Netgalley and 8N Publishing for an ARC. All opinions are mine and mine alone. :)
Scotsman in the Stacks is a very sweet, tame, and uncomplicated romance novel. It is a summer romance between a too good to be true foreigner and a sweet local librarian. It was a quick read with really nice descriptions of the Michigan area; and I bet people from there will find it extra special and magical. It was just a super sweet story with a happily ever after basically from the second they meet.
I absolutely loved this book and if I could have given it more than 5 stars I would have. Paige and James are such a sweet couple in the book, and he's definitely a great guy. Their romance was cute and I enjoyed reading this book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.
A very cute on trend romance between a librarian and yep you guessed it a Scotsman. I have been very into all the bookstore/library type romances that have been hitting the shelves this year and because that has been happening I feel like this story just kinda blended in with the rest of them and ended up very forgettable to me. The cover was very cute though and for anyone not looking for anything life changing may enjoy picking this one up.
This book was fine, the story was sweet but the writing lacked depth. There were small editing errors that drove me crazy and I found myself skipping chapters without any issues. It was compelling enough for me to finish the book, but the writing made it a struggle.
This is a sweet read. Plenty of lovely characters, romance and sweeping gestures. Reminds me of Christina Lauren’s “Roomies” novel, which I adored! I love a good American falls in love with a Scottish/Irish/ British person so this was a very cute read. (3.75 stars rounding to 4)
I don't know why every random piece of media is pushing Scotland, but if the bookstores are anything like this I'm in for a treat
This book made my heart so happy!! It was such a cute and easy romance to read and made me wish I was experiencing a romance like this! Paige and James are so cute and proved that sometimes people just click. I love that this book was able to add in some conflict and drama without it feeling forced and unnecessary. It truly added to the story and just made the ending that much sweeter.
Loved the premise of the book and the cute cover, but this was a little bit of a miss for me. I didn’t feel a connection between the characters
