This is the second book in this series and it can be read as a standalone. Gisele has a price on her head after being accused of killing her husband. She tries to disguise herself as a page and Nigel who discovers her secret and rescues her takes her to Scotland to keep her safe. What will happen when sparks fly between them. Fast-paced read with great characters, excellent world building and sizzling chemistry. I liked it.
I found this story to be quite predictable, but still enjoyable. I feel as though it could have been a bit shorter, as some chapters started to drag and I really had to work to keep reading and not skip over pages just to see what would happen.
I've always read these books by Ms Howell. She knows her craft in telling a story about the Murray clan and their adventures. I really enjoyed reading about her strong highland men who wear they kilts so well. Handsome men who love to fight while keeping their honor. Such is the man who name is Nigel Murray who has been fighting in France as a mercenary for many years. He thought he was in love with his brother's wife, now is knows different. But it takes a while for him to grow up and meet his destiny in a woman on the run for her life.
Gisele is a woman who supposedly killed her husband and the family is out for revenge. When Nigel helps the woman in a dire situation he knows he has to be her guide. She dresses in men's clothing but the Scotsman knows the difference. They spend a lot of time in one peril or another to get to Nigel's home in Scotland.
Eventually they fall in love and get a happy ever after.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.
Sir Nigel Murray has been fighting in France for seven years when he discovers a young woman trying to pass herself off as a page, he sees through her masquerade from the first:. It almost worked--until she was unmasked in battle with the English, at the point of a sword. Nigel saved the raven-haired beauty whose secrets now endangered them both. He spirits her off to Scotland. Gisele knew the dark side of men, having barely escaped the brutality of her highborn husband, Lord Deveau. Now, with Deveau murdered and a price on her head, she was every man's prey--hunted for a crime she did not commit. Nigel is her only refuge but to truly trust him, Gisele must put the past behind her, and let her heart accept the simple truth of his undying love.
This is the second book in the series & is released after first seeing the light of day over twenty years ago. A well written book with strong characters. I really liked both Nigel & Giselle & loved their verbal bantering but I wanted to shake Giselle a couple of times when she acted out of character. An easy to read entertaining book, which I read in a coule of sittings
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Sharp and fun! 1437 late medieval historical romance romp!
Intrepid French woman posing as page flees across France from her husband’s kinsmen. They’re out for blood. Gisele has been accused of murdering her foul and depraved husband. She didn’t, but no one was believing her least of all the powerful DeVeaux’s who have placed a bounty on her head.
Just as she’s about to be captured by two of the DeVeaux men, a pesky Scotsman offers her assistance and sanctuary.
Sir Nigel Murray has been fighting in France for seven years, having fled his homeland clan because of his love for his brother’s wife. Nigel’s entranced by this elfin, feisty female (think the passion and cutting tongue of Leonore from These Old Shades) who also bears a startlingly likeness to the woman who’d had him leaving Scotland
Taking Gisele into his protection, their flight towards a port as they seek a ship bound for Scotland, is a series of triumphs and setbacks, with both learning to lover again.
Mind you Gisele is non too pleased when she finally discovers Nigel’s reason for leaving home and hearth. Fireworks are very much part of this woman’s arsenal.
I have read very little of The Murray’s series, but I do like Hannah Howell’s work, particularly her Wherlocke series. I found this title pleasantly engaging.
This book has apparently been around for at least a decade but is re-releasing in July 2022 as a mass market paperback.
A Kensington Books ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.
(Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.)
This was a fun historical romance where the heroine tries to pose as a man to hide from her murdered husband's kin. She did not murder him but with no other suspects all think she is guilty. After quickly being discovered, she has no other choice but to trust a stranger and flee with him to Scotland.
This plot was very fun and different. I really enjoyed the characters and I love how Nigel worked on gaining her trust and was understanding of her. This is a reissue of the the book for the first time in over a decade and I am not sure if there was anything changed from the original. TW: Spousal abuse.
A huge thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an eARC of this title in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Thanks #NetGalley for giving me an advanced copy of #HighlandHonor by Hannah Howell in exchange for an honest review.
This is actual a reprint of a novel previously published by Howell. This is a great road trip romance with a strong Highland hero who sees Giselle as a strong woman. He helps her to heal from an abusive relationship and helps her to see just how strong she really is. Overall this is an enjoyable story but could have been tighter in moving the plot along. It's not a long novel but at times dragged a bit.
I'm so excited to be reviewing "Highland Honor", a rerelease of Hannah Howell's book from The Murrays series.
Nigel and Gisele meet under the worst of circumstances, with Nigel trying to help Gisele flee the family of Gisele's deceased husband because they thing that she killed her husband. Nigel at first is overcome with lust and isn't certain of Gisele's innocence in the murder of her husband, but he slowly starts falling in love with her. Gisele on the other hand is grateful for Nigel's help in her continued safety, but having only known violence in her marriage is shy around her feelings with Nigel.
I liked the story a lot. I had a few quibbles with writing because I feel like it was a bit aged, but this was originally printed in the late 90s and the book takes place in a much earlier time period. I also thought that the reason Gisele kept running away from Nigel, made sense because she was afraid of confronting her feelings for Nigel, but she also kept getting into trouble by running away.
Overall this was a fun enjoyable book and I would recommend reading if you like historical romance taking place in both France and Scotland in the 1400s.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
3.5-4 out of 5 stars
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Highland Honor is the second book in The Murray’s series. Highland Honor was first published in 1999. This is a long series, twenty-two books. I quickly discovered that the synopsis did not match the actual story. Gisele is running from a murder she didn’t commit. Nigel is a knight who takes her to Scotland to escape the bounty on her head.
I will warn about sexual assault in Gisele’s past and attempted sexual assault on page. I liked Gisele, she was a strong, resilient woman but her choices and actions at times baffled me. Nigel was a compelling character, yet his motives and beliefs had me questioning his integrity at times. The story itself was intriguing; it moved at a medium pace. I felt overall that the romance worked even when I wanted Nigel to be more courageous in expressing his feelings.
I have many books in this series in paperback. This second book is the first I have read in the series; I will read more. I enjoyed the book, and I think it did an excellent job as a building block in a long saga. By the end I had warmed to both Nigel and Gisele, and their passionate connection was undeniable. I think I will enjoy this series; it will take me some time to get used to the writing style as this was published twenty years ago. Overall, this was an entertaining romance with grit and heart. It has to be said that Hannah Howell is a powerhouse in medieval romance, and this book has stood the test of time.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book through Netgalley and the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Fairly typical historical romance, but it was still good story. Though it was easy to guess what was coming next.
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
I have always enjoyed the Highland series and so looked forward to reading this book.
Nigel decides to help Gisele who is fleeing a trumped up murder charge and is only a few steps ahead of the pursuers. Nigel helps her keep the bounty hunters at bay but then they have to try and get from France to Scotland when there are men looking for them at the seaport.
This book is almost non-stop action as they try to outrun the hunters and fight their attraction to each other!
Great HEA and looking forward to more Highlander.
I like Howell's highland books and this was fine.
A far as romance goes it was quite "romance reasons" and I didn't get chemistry between the leads. Nigel was funny but Gisele was annoying, but maybe it's me since I really hate heroines that mistake their foolishness for strength. And as a medieval I could have used more medieval atmosphere or details, this could have taken place any time and it took away from the mood of the book
I enjoyed the story but it could have had less chapters since so many just repeated the storyline and it makes it hard to keep the interest. It's like you read 3 chapters and then the next 3 chapters just say the same thing but with a few different words. The main characters were not my favourite either, a few times I wanted to smack them upside the head! lol For two smart people they sure made a lot of ill gotten decisions.
Gisele has been on the run for a year, blamed for her abusive husband's death and when Nigel overhears her plans to pass as a boy, even cutting her hair short, he decides to help her and bring her to his clan in the Highlands. On the run, there is much danger they encounter but it also gives them a chance to get to know each other better and of course, passions soon follow.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am voluntarily writing an honest review.
Hannah Howell has delivered another masterpiece of written literature. She has a flare to combine mystery, intrigue, drama, and romance that brings the characters, emotions, and scenery to life.
We find Nigel Murray, battling his demons only to realize he needs something more and he also needs to return home to fully banish his demons, after trying to fight, whore, drink them away.
Gisele defraud is hiding for he life. Having been accused of a heinous crime she did not commit. Her family refuses to believe or help her. Only a few have been willing but she does not want to burden them.
Sir Guy Lucette, cousin of Gisele, is on of the few to help but gets hurt. In comes Nigel with a pledge to keep her safe and to take her to Scotland. Along their journey they meet up with another cousin, Sir David Lucette, who tells them they are trying to prove her innocence.
Gisele stays with Nigel out of respect and some anger. As they continue their track to a port with ships bound for Scotland they run into one obstacle after another.
Come join the chase/dash across France as these two discovered talents, dissolve fears, and find what they need and want most.along the way meet new friends and foes that will make you laugh or shiver in fear. Find out what disastrous consequences Gisele puts herself and often Nigel in. If they make it to the port and Scotland? What new talents Gisele learns. What discoveries Nigel finds. Does her family prove her innocence? Does she stay with Nigel?
I so enjoy Hannah's easy flow bringing to life her characters and how you get that feeling of being in the action of the moment.
A great historical romance that highlights the unfair treatment of women. Giselle is being chanced for a crime she didn't do. She's been suffering with an abusive husband and a family who doesn't care. Nigel is running from his past while he runs into Giselle whose despite to get out of harms way
The story was intense and full of action. The romance was awesome and to the point. I did find some of Nigels responses unrealistic and a little out of the character created.
The middle was a little slow. I The they were on the journey for most of the book. The cat and mouse game when on for a little long.
A new villian was added I guess to give s face to what she was running for, but I found it a little abrupt of his appearance and disappearance.
A good romance all inn all
FANTASTIC!!!!! Highland Honor by Hannah Howell is book 2 in The Murrays series and though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. I have been reading Hannah Howell’s books for over 15 years now and she has never disappointed me. Her writing is incredible and her stories amazing. I will admit that in Highland Honor it was tad hard to read due to the abuse Gisele suffered by her husband but unfortunately that was the way it was back in the medieval time and I rather have the truth than sugarcoat it. I found this book to be original, had the real feel of the medieval era, adventurous, had me on the edge of my seat at time and I loved the slow burn between Nigel and Gisele. Hannah is on of the most gifted writers of today and I can’t wait to read her next book. This story has a French Lady that is being accused of murder, not trusting men, running for one’s life, a Scot who is in love with his brother’s wife, being away from home for 7 years, finding someone who looks just his love, vowing protection, being injured, hiding, being kidnapped, rescued, fear, evil and falling in love. This book has it all and I an highly recommending you read this story!!! It really is FANTASTIC!!!!
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Highland Honor, is a story with mainly just Gisele and Nigel as the characters. Every once in a while there is someone who comes along to help but more often it's someone looking to kill them. I enjoyed the closeness that they shared because of this experience. Highland Honor, is a great book worth reading.
She is brave and feisty. He is strong and protective. I love the tenderness in their teasing banter. Love found them amid attacks, chases, and steamy scenes. An enjoyable read that is hard to put down!
I received an ARC via Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
The premise of this book sounded great. Burly Highlander? Check. Damsel in distress? Check. A flight together into the wilderness? Check. Unfortunately, it just didn't deliver. Not a lot of convincing chemistry between the two characters, just ease of proximity. Then they'd randomly stop for an extra day to have sex, which definitely downplayed the believability of them actually being in danger from their pursuers. Neither of them seemed to make good decisions or to communicate their feelings/thoughts, and the plotline got stale a quarter of the way through the book. Overall, no desire to complete the series.
This book will keep you on the edge. Action packed, plotting, drama, danger and vicious secrets, OMG a real mind blowing adventure.
