Historical magical realism inspired by Mexican folklore, set in Kansas City during prohibition. A female bootlegger hiding her magical abilities, her heritage, (and usually her feelings) dreams of owning a jazz club, but has to contend with sexism, bigotry, and local gangsters while protecting her family and growing her business.
This book starts off slow and has some extraneous parts that lend to that feeling; I had a hard time getting truly immersed and entranced with the story. But it is easy to like and root for these characters. It portrays the experience of children of immigrants and I appreciate the queer representation as well. I like that we get to follow Luna’s journey of coming into her magic as well as her identity overall. I like the character of Heck Kessler, even if he fits stereotypes in a few areas; he was just enjoyable and relatable and loveable.

It took me a bit to get into this novel but once I did I enjoyed it very much. It’s well written drawing the reader into the different characters lives and stories. Lots of historic detail with a touch of magic made this a four star read for me. I definitely recommend for anyone who is looking for something different but good to read!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity read this ARC. This is my honest review.
The book takes place in 1920s era Kansas City. The MC is a half Mexican passing for white owner of an underground speakeasy. She also happens to be part witch. She struggles against many obstacles in order to maintain her independence and get ahead in life.
The book begins slowly and builds. The characters and plot work their way into a compelling story that strongly resonates with this day and age.
My only criticism is that at times it was difficult to understand the vernacular of the 1920s underworld. Other than that, it was a wonderful read.
This book was a happy surprise. It started abit slow, but once it picked up, the story was really enjoyable. I am a HUGE fan of historical fantasy, and I think that those who enjoy this genre should pick up Bindle Punk Bruja!
I really ended up enjoying this book! It started off a little slow for my tastes, but once it picked up it was good! It was a very compelling storyline and I’d like to go back and reread soon!
