Gin is my favorite spirit, so I found this book to be very interesting and informative. I ended up buying a copy for myself when it was published. Recommended.

For gin-lovers and gin-curious alike. This book is a comprehensive guide to, well, enjoying gin! This book breaks gin down into the individual complexities of flavour and nuance. it also dives into the history of gin, tips on selecting and tasting gin, information about different gins from around the world, and provides many recipes to make at home. It also offers a sort of journal section where you can document your own tasting journey and keep notes for future reference.

As a gin lover, this book has me ready for my next delicious cocktail!

Enjoying Gin begins with an introduction to the history, where it shows genever (shortened to gin eventually) was mainly used for medicinal purposes to start with, even with Samuel Pepys recording it helped him pass a stool! It wasn't until the Dutch King, William III came to the English throne in 1689 did it become the recreational drink we know it as today. Many laws in England were passed to prevent gin from being consumed after it got out of hand during the 1700s. The history then concludes with Prohibition in America.

The book also explains how gin is made, with the ingredients needed, how it is distilled, when it can be drunk (straight away!) and the different types of gin. How to read the label of the bottle you purchase is also included in this book with items such as its name, age, what it was distilled from, alcohol volume plus a few more bits. Next is the how-to taste gin, with a recommendation for glassware and how to serve it if not part of a cocktail, then onto the aromas to detect and sipping the liquid.

The Famous gin chapter includes the following gins: Beefeater, Tanqueray, Hendrick's, Plymouth, Bombay Sapphire, and more, which explains its history, botanical mix, and tasting notes.

Before the 47 pages for your own tasting notes, there are 7 cocktail recipes from classic gin and tonic to a Tom Collins; each has it's own history, a photograph of the drink alongside its ingredients and how to make it.

Overall this is an excellent book for those wanting to understand more about gin, it's history and how to drink it.

I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.

I'm an avid gin collector, and drinker so I really enjoyed this book. It not only covers the history of gin, but how to taste gins and what to look out for. I especially like the sections on the standard brands and how to read through any marketing of gin to get more of an idea of what you are getting! Particularly helpful when there is such a range of gin available now! The journal pages at the back would be great for notes.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. I love this book! I have been on a gin kick after reading period books set in the 1920's.

As a huge fan of gin, I found a lot of this book to be quite interesting. However, I feel as though the book was dragged out quite a bit, and then too much was left to fill out as tasting notes. It breaks it up into gin, nose, style, and color. This is great and helpful when learning what to look for with specific gin drinks, but after a few pages of that the reader can likely do that part on their own. It was an interesting read but I don't think it's worth buying.

I really enjoyed the first part of this book. I really liked learning about the history of gin, and some ideas for cocktails.
However, the second half of the book is just for note making about different gins. I think its useful to have this, but not an entire half of the book.
Don't think it makes it worth the price.
I wanted more!

Gin has long been my favorite liquor, and I have been been experimenting with gin cocktails over the last few years. “Enjoying Gin” offers an in-depth look at the spirit, covering not only its production and history but also useful topics like how to best serve and taste gin, what to know about the most famous gin brands, and how to make the most well-known gin cocktails. There are even blank tasting notepages at the end. Reading this has definitely motivated me to try gins other than my usual brand and to pay better attention to the scents and flavors. I only wish there were more cocktail recipes included.
