We really enjoyed this, as we have all his other books. The topics seem silly, but always manage to teach you something useful. My favorites in this book were the fireman’s pole to the moon, the walk back in time, and the risk of raining candy from the sky. XKCD will always be one of my favorite comics and the books are just as good.
Classic Randall Munroe - informative, funny and forces you to look at the world in new ways. What If? 2 is just as captivating as its predecessor and asks questions just as wild and wonderful.. Read every single word and don't skip the footnotes which almost always will make you laugh.
What I've learned the most from this is that people have a lot of weird questions, especially about the sun But this is an easy, fast read that does make you go 'huh' occasionally.
If you read this before bed, here are some of the really messed up dreams you can have:
*licking the sun
*your proximity to a spider at any given time
*a black hole made of soup
*burning blocks of iron
*swimming in a pool full of spit
........... *makes face*
Seriously, all hilarity aside, this is a very good book, full of very good science and lots of thought provoking questions which will lead you to lot of good conversations with your family and possibly hours of googling fun.
Just don't read it before bed.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this novel. I am rating this book based the stars due to lack of time to leave a full review.
There's a certain joy to be had from taking very silly things very seriously, especially since the end result tends to equal out somewhere near the comically absurd. Monroe is unparalleled in the art of answering questions about previously unconsidered topics almost before you remember that you didn't ask in the first place.
Thanks to NetGalley for this review copy!
Well, Randall Munroe is already my favorite webcomic artist, and I loved the first What If? so it is no surprise that I loved this one, too. I really liked the shorter sections as well as the long explanations, laughed out loud so many times, and found myself reading many to my family as I went. Another great effort. If you like science topics done in a fun way, or you are an xkcd fan, you are sure to like this.
Worth purchasing just for the cartoons.
Fascinating questions and amazing answers. How do people even come up with these questions? But Munroe tackles them in detail.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, provided by NetGalley.
I have adored every since book that Randall Munroe has released and this one is no different. Insightful, funny, interesting, smart, and incredible. It amazes me the questions that he gets and answers and how well he is able to explain it in such a way that I don’t feel completely lost. He could released 100 what if books and I would read every single one!
Randall Munroe is an expert at writing books that you absolutely must consume. What If? 2 marries humor and science/curiosity effectively and awesomely. It’s a wonderful book for the young and old alike. I’ll be recommending this book to all customers!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Randall Munroe is back with detailed answers to absolutely ridiculous questions... and it's better than ever!
Have you ever wondered how many humans it takes to provide enough calories for a T-Rex? Or whether it's possible to build a billion story skyscraper? Look no further than this book for the answers to those off-the-wall queries.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and despite the chaotic nature of the questions, I was still able to learn a thing or two.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for this book in exchange for my honest review.
Another good installment to this series. Munroe always answers outrageous questions with in-depth and often funny answers and situations. The illustrations add a lot to the narrative as well.
Another exploration of bizarre questions. Munroe, known for the webcomic xkcd, takes all of the questions seriously and explains exactly how badly things would go if you tried to--
drive to the end of the known universe
catch a spent bullet in your bare hand
put a house-sized Jupiter down in your neighborhood
drink a cloud
build a billion-story skyscraper
--to name just a few of the questions he tackles with humor and rigorously worked-out science. Line drawings add to the fun.
Not a book to read straight through, but loads of fun.

What If? 2 gives us exactly what we wanted: ridiculous questions answered (somewhat) seriously. Hilarious and baffling!
I have purchased every Randall Munroe book available for my husband, yet never read one myself until now. I’m so sad over the joy I’ve unknowingly deprived myself!
This is a book of answered questions; The kind of questions which can only be asked by the mind of a child- before we age and begin calling that kind of magical thinking “ridiculous.” Munroe answers each one using logic, math, science, and tons of research in a manner that is engaging and fun. The diagrams are charming and hilarious.
I will recommend this to curious minds of all ages. I’ll also be digging through my husband’s books to find out what I’ve been missing!!!
I was lucky and thankful to receive this ARC from NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Riverhead. Can’t wait to get my guy a hardcopy of this upon release!
Reading this book is like being seven again. You can be curious and ask whatever questions you want and have a scientist break down the answer. Believe it or not most of the questions in this book are stuff I’ve wondered about. Incredibly interesting!
