I really enjoyed the art style for this manga - it is BEAUTIFUL! Even though I have read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, this format still has me wanting to know what happens next! This is a great addition to this manga series. I enjoyed the original novel and am enjoying getting to re-read it in this style and fall in love with these characters all over again! Impatiently waiting for the next release!
I absolutely adore this novel and was ecstatic to find out it had been made into a manga - I happily preordered the first when I found out and was OBSESSED & of course I purchased the 2nd novel as well but thank you NetGalley for letting me look at the ARC before it came out!
Just like the first, the artists have brought to life some of my favorite characters ever. I cried so many times in this volume out of sheer happiness. The most romantic scene in any novel for me has been the scene where Cath reads The Outsiders to Levi all night and they fall asleep in each other’s arms. These two fell in love before they even knew it was happening. I cried and screamed and showed the entire scene to my partner as it just made my soul soar seeing it illustrated so beautifully. I love this story, I love these characters, once again Sam Maggs & Gabi Nam have made this manga one of my most treasured possessions. I cannot wait for the rest of the series (and maybe one day get a Carry On manga as well)
110% will be buying for our library!
Fantastic second addition to the Fangirl manga series. I love how closely this is following the original book and the drawings/illustrations are perfect. Highly recommend.
YA graphic novel adaptation. Though I had not read the original, I really enjoyed both graphic novels and would recommend them. Interesting description of fan fiction and its popularity.
A good continuation of Cath's journey in reconciliation and relationship amongst those she is closest with; notably Wren, Levi, and her estranged mother. It is a volume delving into Cath's inner angst and desire to be loved whether it be familial or romantic; told in a combination of inner monologue, intimate and/or distraught dialogue, and the world of her fanfiction. I have to come to know more about Cath's passion for the craft, prompting my engagement in her development as a writer and curiosity as to how she uses this craft to both cope with the tough reality of her personal life as well as express her desire for respite and connection. A scene stealer is of Cath and Levi reading together whether it is her fan fiction or a novel. Gabi Nam, illustrator of Fan Girl, captures these mundane moments with an endearing sensitivity and intimacy like that of good shoujo manga.
Admittedly it does tend to get slow in the middle portion, especially when it gets knee deep into the fanfiction as I do not find it as memorable as Cath's own journey. It may be an extension into her imagination and writing style, though it slightly hampers the pacing. Fortunately the work leaves off with great development and a shocking cliffhanger, one which has me excited for more.
I enjoyed being able to see this book drawn out. It was a good show of what the original story was. I like the artwork and thought it was well done. I enjoyed it being in black and white and not having color overwhelm the images. The artist was really good and I enjoyed the overall story with the images.
Very cute! I love fangirl and this continues to delight. It has amazing rep as well which is so appreciated.
I loved this graphic novel of fangirl. I read part one when it came out and both it and part two did not disappoint. It just gave me the warm joyous feeling that the original novel did.
I adore these mangas!
I remember reading the novel of fangirl back when I was a little preteen who myself, was a fangirl. Reading this brought back all the nostalgia and happy feelings that it did the first time I read it.
Cath and Levi’s relationship is so pure and heartwarming, and of course, who doesn’t wanna see Baz Pitch in manga form?
Cath & Levi, take 2!
Cath still hasn't fully stepped out of her shell by the time volume 2 rolls around. In volume 1 she and her sister Wren are just entering college, and while Wren was settling in comfortably, Cath is still keeping to herself, penning the successful Harry Potter-esque fanfic that she so often escapes into. In this volume, she has established a few friendships and been dealt a few blows, and you can see her starting to find her space. Cath has a reserved, quiet cleverness that I think many readers will respond well to, and the lovable Levi has the type of personality that anyone could benefit from! It's cute watching their relationship grow, and I look forward to further volumes.
Jumping back into the world of Fangirl was a welcome escape from daily troubles. There is just something comforting about anything penned by Rainbow Rowell, and Fangirl Volume 2 was no different. Admittedly, it's been a very long time since I read volume 1, and I had to refresh my memory before jumping in, thus the late review- but I'm glad I did. Hopefully with that cliffhanger we won't have to wait so long for volume 3! This will be an easy graphic novel to recommend to my patrons!
I loved Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell and the novel translates well into a graphic novel series. It is fun to actually see the characters on paper. I enjoyed this!
It’s no secret that I loved the original novel, so when I found out that it was getting a manga edition I was over the moon! It is so cool to be able to read one of my favorite books in a style that I wouldn’t normally pick up, and see how wonderful the characters and dialogue are interpreted. This book was a delight, just like the first volume, and I can’t wait for the second! What a cliffhanger!
I was excited to see Fangirl adapted into manga and I must say, this was a fantastic read and adaptation. The art by Gabi Nam is amazing and just makes for such a cool media transition. The more Levi we get to see the better! It's just so wonderful to see so many cute scenes visually. Looking so forward to vol 3!
I read Fangirl a few years ago and I’ve loved being back in this world. This is a great adaptation. My daughter has book 1 of the manga version and I’ll definitely be buying her book 2.
This book brings back a sense of comfort and nostalgia.
I first read Fangirl 9 years ago, when it first came out. It is one of my best friend's favorite books. So any time I re-enter the world, I feel comforted.
I cannot get over this manga adaptation. I love it so much, I wish people would read fangirl, but if this book is another way to get exposure... I'll take it.
As a huge fan of both the novel and Rainbow Rowell, I knew the manga wouldn't disappoint. The art is incredible, and tells the story in way that feels entirely new. I can't wait to share it with our anime club!
A big thank you to Netgalley and Viz Media for sending me an e-ARC of Rainbow Rowell and Sam Magg's "Fangirl Vol.. 2"! All opinions are my own.
Are you a fan of new adult narratives about starting college and being practically abandoned (okay, maybe not abandoned, but it sure feels that way) by everyone you know until your roommate and her annoyingly chipper friend adopt you? If so, you will love this graphic novel adaptation of Rainbow Rowell's seminal classic "Fangirl". Sam Maggs has taken the colossal challenge of adapting the tried-and-true story of Cath's first year at college, and she is killing it! The illustrations add even more than the original novel did, and while the series will be split into 4 volumes, you never feel cut off or violently thrown back into reality. I heavily recommend this to people who enjoy new adult fiction, manga, and found family tropes.
**Disclaimer: I received a free advanced readers copy of Fangirl, Volume 2 by Sam Maggs through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this opportunity.
Fangirl, Volume 2 by Sam Maggs is a young adult graphic novel adaptation of the young adult novel of the same name by Rainbow Rowell. It is the story of Cath who goes to university with her twin sister and her coming into herself. The graphic novel published on June 14th, 2022. I rated it 4 stars on Goodreads.
Here's the summary from Goodreads:
Cath just wants to hang out with her twin sister and write fanfiction. But now that they’re at college, her sister doesn’t have time for her. And life keeps pulling Cath further and further out of her shell. For the first time ever, Cath has her own social circle. There’s Nick, her handsome classmate who wants her to write short stories with him… And then Levi, who keeps showing up when she isn’t looking for him … Actually … maybe Cath’s circle is more of a triangle?
I enjoyed the first and second volume of this manga/graphic novel adaptation of Fangirl, but that's not surprising since I also quite enjoyed the novel. I like reading about fandom culture and so it was really interesting to read about an introvert who likes to write fanfiction (even though I'm not super into fanfiction myself). It's a novel that is well suited to graphic adaptation.
The second volume continued to have great art. I liked the design of the characters, and how unique they each felt. I also liked the design of the excerpts from the Simon Snow books and fanfiction that the characters had written. It's neat to get a visual snippet of those worlds. It was really well illustrated.
The story continued to be good, and I really liked watching how Levi and Cath grew closer over the length of the graphic novel. It was well adapted in the moments that were put onto the page and how the narration was pared down. I really enjoyed the burgeoning romance and how it left me on a cliffhanger waiting for the next one.
If you liked the novel, you should definitely check out the adaptation.
Another 5 star for Rainbow Rowell. Those you loved Her novel Fangirl will fall in love with the Manga adaptation. Volume 3 can’t come out soon enough!
