The type of book that will make you scream into your pillow…literally.
Cath is still awkward, but we love her to death. She’s also young, inexperienced, and has gone through trauma. I love that I got this backstory with her and Wren. It really explains a lot about why Cath retreats within herself, and why Wren acts out.
Speaking of Wren, let’s talk about it for a second. It’s really interesting about the dynamic that people have placed her and Cath into. Wren wants independence from the whole “twin thing,” because other people will always associate her with Cath. This book dove into the “two-for-one” deal that always came with the sisters, so it’s easy to understand where Wren is coming from. However, in my opinion, she can always take a different approach to dealing with it in a healthier way. This doesn’t include cutting off Cath cold-turkey.
Buuuuut, it’s also understandable because of what the girls went through with their mom leaving them. People deal with trauma in different ways. For Cath, she’s an extreme introvert who escapes her own reality through writing fanfiction. For Wren, she’s an extreme extrovert who escapes her reality through questionable situations and irresponsible decisions. But, where can we draw the line between irresponsible and overly worrisome?
An EXCELLENT cliffhanger (this is where the screaming into a pillow commenced), and also an interesting dynamic between Reagan and Cath. Where readers think of Reagan as cool, calm, and cold, we see the ice start to melt a bit when it comes to Levi. I also predict we’ll see a volcanic eruption underneath this façade in Vol. 3 considering the predicament Levi has placed himself in😅it isn’t looking good for Levi.
All-in-all, it’s a 5 star book/manga. The illustrations are off the charts, and it’s completely swoon worthy with a hint of the reader screeching in the last 10 minutes of the manga :)
An interesting continuation of the fan girl story. I have already read the book that the graphic novel is based on. So I already knew the story. I liked how they are telling the story and how they are breaking between volumes. I love the art style.
So so SO good!!! I love the character development that was perfectly broken down and explored throughout this manga. Cath is a character I can whole heartedly relate to, especially with her love of writing, reading, and fangirling. ***spoiler ahead*** I'm really interested in seeing how Cath and Levi's relationship will turn out by the next manga release!
The manga adaptation of this series is so delightful! Even though I've read Fangirl multiple times, this adaption is giving me new ways to explore a story I thought I'd gotten everything out of. On top of that, the art is so well-done and really combines the manga style with the images I've had in my head of these characters for years. I can't wait for the next volume!
This is a wonderful, immersive adaptation of one of my favorite books. The sections with Baz and Simon blend nicely with the rest of the text (more so than the original). Can't wait for the next one!
The Fangirl manga is a visual retelling of Rainbow Rowell's bestselling title of the same name. If you were a fan of Cath the first time, you're sure to fall in love all over again. If you never read Fangirl before, this series is the perfect place to jump into both the world of Carry On, and discover the girl who dreamed of this magickal world.
In vol. 2 we see Cath finally coming out of her Snowbaz encrusted shell. Sher has finally made friends with her roommate, Reagan, and her possible boyfriend by default, things with Wren are is a really awkward place, and she's discovered that maybe she enjoys writing with other people. In Vol. 2, we watch as Cath falls farther away from her sister, but closer to the boys she has somehow found herself surrounded by. Yet, just when she thinks she is starting to get the hang of college, she begins to get hit blow after blow, leading up to a cliffhanger that will cause the wait for vol. 3 to be nearly unbearable.
Fangirl Vol. 2 is the next installment in the Fangirl manga adaptations and this second one was just as good as the first one!
You do not have to read the original novel to read the mangas as they are very spot on in their adaptations. With that being said, the original book is absolutely worth the read, but this a great alternative for those looking to reread Fangirl or for those who would simply prefer a graphic version.
Levi is absolutely the star of this volume, as he deserves it to be, but they do leave it on the worst cliffhanger for those who haven’t read the original book so be warned! I cannot wait for the next installment as seeing one of my favorites books come to life (in a sense?) has been such a fun thing to experience!
Great adaptation of the novel. Illustrations are excellent with lots of thought put into differentiating between the twins and the fan fiction portions. Looking forward to the third installment.
AHH!!!! This was so good!! Shockingly good!!! I didn't expect it to be bad, but wow it made my heart flutter and left on such a cliff hanger that I'm dying for the next volume! For an "American manga" this was absolutely wonderful. They really shouldn't be calling it a manga though, just call it a graphic novel like it is.
I love Fangirl so much. I've read and reread it. It's fun to get to read it in a new format. Volume 2 ends when Levi kisses the other girl, so I had to then pick up my copy of the original book so I could keep reading.
Just as fun as the first volume! My only real complaint is that it's volume 2 of 4 and I have to wait for more... Last time I caved and just read the original novel. It's interesting to me that I still want more despite knowing the story now.
Took me awhile to get into this second volume since it had been so long since I read volume one. But once I was there, it was adorable and cute, just as I expect from a Rainbow Rowell story!
This is the first time I'm reading the graphic novel before the original work. I've read the Simon Snow series, so it's refreshing and fun to see that world through the eyes of a fanfiction writer! However, the story that is built around the fanfiction is an intense read that sucks you in. Cath's life is engaging, and the people around her bring life to the story where she herself is a mess (and easy to identify with!)
A great second book in the series, I'm happy to see it's continuing!
This is the second volume in the series and it really starts to get into some emotional territory. Cath is dealing with feelings of abandonment (her mom up and left the family when she was very young), losing connection with her twin sister at college, troubles with her writing instructor, and more. The Fangirl novel is an all-time favorite, and I’m really happy with this graphic adaptation. The art is very nice and the pacing is perfect! I only wish it didn’t take a year and a half for each volume to be released. This one ended on a horrible cliff hanger!
I have now read the non-graphic novel version of this book. I love the manga version of it almost as much as the regular version. As far as I can remember, it is following the original version exactly. I guess that's why there's going to be at least one more volume. I can't wait! The ending to this volume was a punch in the gut.
The Fangirl YA manga is back with volume 2.

Book two picks up with Cath trying to rescue her sister, Wren, when she texts her 911 only to have her blow her off when Cath shows up. The sisters continue to drift further apart from one another as Cath breaks out of her shell more through her writing class with Nick and sharing her fan fiction with Levi. Which boy will capture her heart in the end?

This is the second installment of the Fangirl manga reimagining and I loved it. I am someone who was obsessed with this novel so when I heard a manga version was coming out, I was thrilled. Book 1 and 2 have definitely lived up to my expectations. This title releases June 14!
CW: alcohol, parental abandonment
