I’m in the process of adopting myself and I’m thrilled to have read this book. It’s a amazing representation of what different families can look like in a community. This is modern family! Not everyones home is the same but they are beautiful in their own way. This is a MUST buy!!!
This books is so beautifully illustrated and we love how the families and family circumstances are explained in child speak. We especially loved the transgender description, ‘matching how the heart feels’ is such a simple but clear explanation and in a world where we sometimes over complicate, this is actually all that’s needed.
The uniqueness of all families are included so it’s not singling out LGBTQ+ and clumping diverse families together as ‘other’ families, there are childless couples, blended families and families choosing alternative living.
Even the end papers of this book are beautiful!
A wonderful children's book that breaks down different kinds of families and family dynamics. Our main character, Aria, helps introduce the reader to all the different families that live in her town and, by doing so, helps break down that feeling of "otherness" that can so often accompany the introductions of people who live differently. It's a wonderful story that every child should have read to them. Book like these can help break down barriers and normalize all different living situations. I would highly recommend this book to teachers for their classroom library and anyone who wants to help teach their kids more about the world. Kids will love the book and the gorgeous illustrations that go along with it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Oh. My. Goodness !! This was the most precious children's book I have read in ages. Mayhaps I even teared up a bit !!
When I got into publishing in 2017, I was so set on working in adult trade.... and then I attended a lecture from the editorial director of Greenwillow Books and my heart was swayed; I fell in love with children's literature that day. And since then, while I am still unsure as to whether or not I will have children of my own, I've been building a collection of my favorite children's books (picture books, board books). I can say, without a doubt, that this needs to be added to my collection, stat ! It is absolutely the kind of book I want to share with the parents and expecting parents in my life. It's the type of book—thoughtful and lighthearted and loving—that their kids deserve!
P.S. As an honorary Canadian (long story lol) and French speaker, I'm so happy to support Canadian and French creators 💚 Je besoin d'une copie française tout de suite !!
Oh Lord, I need to have the physical copy ASAP! And it should definitely be translated into many languages cause it is the most touching kids' book I have lately read.
This story should be read by many adults as well. The portrayal of the small city and the families is the greatest. It shows tolerance, variety, and great respect for people's choices and lifestyles.
Pure perfection. Great story about the most important things written in such a cute way. Short but including everything that I wanted to learn my daughter about.
I'm so grateful for it
Every person, whether young or old, should read this book! It is lovely and teaches such a valuable lesson about families. I don't know about you, but sometimes I avoid listening to the news because of how often it makes me lose faith in humanity. But every so often, I run into something that helps me regain it. This book is one of them.
While meant for children, I can think of many adults who can benefit from reading this book. Families do not all look the same. They come in all shapes and sizes. They can be made up of many or few members. May have one parent, two, three, four, or more. They can be made up of same-sex parents or heterosexual parents. But all have one thing in common: love.
This is definitely a book worth having in your family library.
The clever premise and style is engaging, and family dynamics not often shown are given space in this beautifully illustrated book. There are two moms, a single dad, a transgendered parent, a couple with no children, kids with the same and different parents, a family in the woods, some kids that live with their dancing grandparents, a family that has adopted, and a family with triplets and a dad in a wheel chair: I like that there are families of many shape and style and size, but I wish a few lines about maybe what the readers family might look like were included in the text, not just in the backmatter. It is great to show nine different families, but that doesn't cover "all" of them, and a few words to empower the reader who might not be reflected would have been nice. Not sure how the family that built their own home really fits with the rest, but I might be missing something. Also the idea of "universes" seems to start strong, but then disappear. Little ones might not get that a family can be a symbol for one's universe and the text doesn't assist in the concept.
A touching story about 9 unique families that live in a close-knit village. I appreciated the diversity of each family unit, showing that some families have two moms, single-parents, many children, no children at all, as well as parents and/or children with disabilities. The illustrations are beautiful and represent the story well. The prompts at the end were a qualitative addition.
I acquired All The Families In My Town pre-release in exchange for an honest review
this gorgeously illustrated, gentle, sweet picture book addresses the concept of a "proper family" and shows that there is no such thing. families can consist of anyone from a boy and his grandparents, a single father, and his kids, or in the case of our narrator, a girl, and her two mums. plus I suspect the reason it's such a small town consisting of various families is for privacy away from the large and possibly judgemental crowds.
This is such a clever way to explain this to young kids! stock it in the classroom shelves!
This book is such a lovely way to look at different family structures. It shows so many families and Aria's character has such a positive view on each one. It will fit really well with the new relationships curriculum in the UK as it clearly shows how all families are connected together by the love they share with each other.
This book is absolutely beautiful. The illustrations are so pretty and the use of mostly yellows and oranges adds to the joyfulness of the book.
I loved everything about this book and will read it to my children over and over. The inclusion of lots of different types of families and the LGBT+ representation is incredible and a great way for children to understand how families can come together. I especially loved the child-free by choice couple because they are often overlooked when it comes to these types of books and it was lovely to see them included as a reminder to us that those without children can still be a family.
I am obsessed with this one! I immediately want to get it for every child in my life. This was a beautiful way to help make kids aware of all the ways to be family. Lovely and well explored with gorgeous art work.
Aria, a sweet little girl, lives in a very tiny town consisting of only nine houses. She reflects on the diversity of the families that reside in those nine lodgings.
She explains how each family is different and truly unique from each other. She includes: a family with no children, one with two moms, one dad with children, one where a child lives with grandparents and one where a child has been adopted, just to name a few. The book explains that there really is no pat definition for one type of family. Families are units of people brought together by love. They are committed to living and staying together. A family expresses unconditional love and support to one another. I love this definition of a family from www.family.lovetoknow.com:
"The word family is one of the most loosely defined terms in the English language; because it means something different to everyone. While one person may define family as the relatives who share their home, another may consider family to include extended relatives residing near and far. Still, someone else views their beloved circle of friends or their pets as family. Families are vastly different, but all function under one single premise: shared love and commitment."
The illustrations are gorgeous, full of detail and bursting with beautiful colours. I love the warm inviting colour pallet that the illustrator has chosen to work with. This book will generate conversations regarding all the ways that families can be different. "All the Families in My Town" is a heartwarming book that will spark discussions about a variety of family styles and certainly would be a great asset, in classrooms and elementary school libraries. I highly recommend this book!
All the Families in My Town is adorable. Point, blank, period. Going into this illustrated children's book, I knew what to expect from a brand assumption. I knew the main character would be explaining the various types of families that live around her and how they might be different yet very much the same. There are gay couples, disabled couples, trans representation, adoption, single couples, etc. All the Families in My Town weaves a beautiful little story of acceptance with warm color illustrations that capture the warmth of love, understanding, and the joy of families.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
All the Families in my Town is an adorable children's book about family and how each family is unique and different. I love the diversity of this book and how inclusive it is towards modern day families. We meet 9 different families in this book: one with no children, one with two mums, one with two dads, one a dad on his own with children, one a trans parent, one where the child lives with grandparents, one where a child is fostered and more. This is a great book to give a child to help them understand either their own unique family unit or others around them, and teaches children that their is no 'normal' when it comes to families and that we are all unique and individuals.
This was one of the most beautful picture books I've ever seen. We're taken on a tour of this close knit town, featuring a diverse range of families- lesbian parents, a trans single dad, and a child being raised by grandparents to name a few. The explosion of colours in every illustration compliment the cover and make for a visually pleasing read to go with the beautiful story, I'm sure this would be a really enjoyable book for any child as well as a great conversation starter- but I also think this story can ultimately be enjoyed by all ages.
Thank you to NetGalley and Chouette Publishing for providing me with an advanced ebook copy of this title!
"All the Families in My Town" is an absolutely stunning book. It's wonderful to see all the different family setups included in one book, although I wish there were more moments of interaction between the families rather than going through them one-by-one. In that way it feels a little less like a story and more like a list. However, with so few books managing to show this level of diversity in family setup, it's a great starting point for talking with kids about all the ways a family can be made. What really makes the book are the gorgeous illustrations by Ariane Caldin, which are warm and full of heart. Recommended to anyone who want their kids to know there's no single way to be a family.
Thank you NetGalley and Chouette Publishing for presenting me with an ARC of this book in exchange of a honest review.
This book is supposed to available everywhere! Such a wholesome and innocent take on the LGBTQIA+ community, every child should be made to read this book. Honestly, I don't think there could be a better way of explaining these topics to little children. This book is everything a queer person could ask for and I'm so glad they exist.
This book was amazing! It was very inclusive and shares such a positive message of acceptance and understanding of our differences. I love the diversity in this book, and it would be great to have younger kids exposed to the different kinds of family dynamics that this book portrays.
Absolutely an important book for libraries and schools to share. This book has so much diversity and love. The illustrations are spectacular! And can I just get a shout out for physical disability representation and for a couple who chose not to have kids and how it was beautifully explained. So so darling!
