"60 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet" by Dennis Denenberg and Lorraine Roscoe is a captivating introduction to sixty influential Americans, each of whom has made a significant impact in various fields such as politics, science, entertainment, and athletics. Aimed at preteens and teens, this book offers concise, photo-illustrated double-page spreads for each hero, complete with biographies, quotes, and resources for further exploration.
The authors have updated this edition with modern design elements and included contemporary figures like Amanda Gorman, Dolly Parton, Fred Rogers, and Kamala Harris, providing a fresh perspective on what it means to be a hero in today's world. The engaging writing style and well-curated content make this book an excellent starting point for young readers interested in learning more about these influential figures. One criticism is that there could have been more Native American heroes to reflect a more complete heritage of the United States. But other than that, it's a useful book.

This biographical collection touches on a variety of individuals from multiple walks of life and across historic eras. These 60 American Heroes come from politics, science, entertainment, athletics, and more. Geared toward preteens and teens, each hero has a two page spread which includes a biography, quote, and info on additional resources for further investigation. Illustrations and pictures add interest as well. There were a handful of people who might not necessarily be considered heroes, but for an introductory read, these biographical sketches will do the trick. Just be aware that there are controversial figures and guide your children as you see fit. All in all, it's a nice collection for peaking your child's interest and introducing some lesser known pioneers in American history.

Such a neat collection of American Heroes. It was great to read with my kiddos. There wasn’t too much information that they were bored listening. The pictures and the quotes brought the people to life.
What a great book for preteen and teen readers. The 60 featured heroes are from all walks of life and many eras of history. A short, 2 page bio is given with vocabulary help and recommendations for additional books. The illustrations and pictures add to the book and could grab a young persons attention and want to read about their life. Middle school students often look for easy to read items and this will maybe get them interested in a subject like history or science. Also a great gift from grandparents to younger children. I thought this was a great collection of both past and present-day heroes. It gives a great overview and doesn't get too deep so children of all ages should be able to enjoy this one!
This book was well written, but I didn't agree with all the figures shown here, especially the figures that are still living and felt that there was too much of a political lean in the writing of this book.
Overall this is a pretty good and comprehensive collection of heroes filled with interesting information. I think my biggest critique would be that I wished there were more Native people included. And also, some people (Thomas Jefferson for example) might have been a president and done some good things, but honestly I think he did more harm than good and I don't know if he deserves to be called a "hero", I would have left him out to be completely honest, or at least have moved him to the runner up section at the end of the book. I did like that it included some modern people who are still living and making a difference (like Dolly), and not just people from the past. I think kids will enjoy it!
