I picked up Misfire based on knowing it was a medical thriller. When a new device,
cadence heart implanted defibrillator, misfires a thriller is born. Not only once but three times causing three different patience to go into cardiac arrest. This story is told from Dr. Downey (Kate) as she tries to uncover the mystery and reason behind these misfiring. Heavily invested due to her aunt Irm having a cadence herself.
This story started off great! Strong FMC in medicine working as an anesthesiologist in a University Hospital. I found this story to have a great pace, although slow in the morning. I was immediately immersed in Dr. Downey’s story and the ‘who dunnit vibes’. The relationship between Dr. Downey and her elderly aunt and her friend Nikki Yarborough enjoyable. Kate is very relatable and introspective character and had grown a lot in this story. I would say this had a very slice of life feel and the immersion into her working career (and challenges of it) was amazing. I found myself wandering a bit in the middle section but this story had a great story telling to it. Overall rating on this book, 4 rating. I could not stop thinking about the ramifications of this book! Truly terrifying of what we do not know and may not be told.
P.S. I loved the author’s note and the book club questions section at the end.
Thank you to Netgalley and Oceanview Publishing for the digital ARC copy for my honest review of this book.
I love a thriller written by an author with a background in medicine and sciences, it really comes out in their work - for example Lucinda Berry, who I've read many books from and most importantly, Tammy Euliano!
She's an MD, who is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Florida. He real world knowledge adds depth to the story
If you're after an exciting medical thriller, give Misfire a go - I do recommend starting with book one in the series (this is book 2) for a better reading experience - it's not required, but I am of the opinion reading a series from the beginning is always best
Part romance and part medical thriller, Misfire is certainly a highly entertaining novel, despite the fact that, being the second volume in a series, some questions remain open for those who have not read the first. Well-informed and medically accurate, given the author's profession, it develops a complex plot, in which frustrations and guilt take centre stage, leading to an unnecessary and cruel revenge.
An excellent read for a sleepless night.
Summary:
In ‘Misfire’, the eighth Rachel Goddard mystery, Kadence, a brand-new FDA-approved defibrillator, misfires when it shouldn’t and fires when it shouldn’t save a patient. Kate Downey, an experienced anaesthesiologist, believes her aunt is the victim of murder by misfiring defibrillator, and when Kate’s husband and sons become hospital patients, the body count grows. With the help of her best friend, the lawyer Christian O’Donnell, and a detective named Garner who also just happens to be Christian’s sister-in-law, Kate unravels the mysteries surrounding the faulty Kadence devices, and does her best to stop them from hurting more patients.
Review:
Misfire is less frenetic than Fatal Intent; although it has a similar ‘storyline over tolly’ pace, the book has a heavy-duty medical emphasis and numerous threads of plot which come together satisfyingly but in a more richly layered way. It stands alone, but it’s enriched if you’ve read the earlier instalment – you’ll recognise recurring characters and subplots, some of which play major roles, which this time include a murderer with a craving for revenge and enough of a medical background to be able to contribute to the problem of the day.
While it starts out slowly, after that it picks up speed and moves along briskly with a series of carefully done plot twists and turns that keep us interested. The lead character Kate Downey is sympathetic, perky yet tough when she needs to be, with some good supporting characters – including the Aunt Irm, who is the scene stealer here.
At its best, it portrays the intensely competitive hospital environment and the huge pressures on medical personnel; at its best, it examines deeply ingrained attitudes towards gender in the medical profession, adding social commentary to the mix.
The complex interplay between Kate and Christian serves as a delightful subplot, even as it fleshes out the emotional texture of the central mystery, while leaving the possibility for the series to expand in future instalments through them both – and also Aunt Irm’s participation.
Overall, Misfire is a finely wrought mix of medical suspense and interpersonal drama, made all the more tantalising by Stein’s evident skill and the many shades of grey she explores in the realm of medical ethics. If you’ve longed for a thriller with plenty of romantic filigree and more than a sprinkling of ethical quandaries thrown in, this sequel is the very thing. Many thanks to NetGalley and Oceanview Publishing for an eARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
Medical suspense that had me breathless. It is super interactive and I had no idea what was happening.
More and more commonly, individuals that we know and love are getting implantable medical devices to treat or mitigate health issues...but what happens when an implanted device malfunctions, otherwise known as a misfire. Misfires happen in this novel, but the root cause of them...is it nefarious or is it just a design flaw...is yet to be determined. Hands down one of the best medical mystery/thrillers I've ever read.
I received a free epub copy for an honest review.
Great story. I enjoyed the medical aspects of the mystery. The twist at the end was a doozy and I hope the next book addresses some of the main characters insecurities. I enjoyed all the main characters and the plot moved at a good pace. I felt the character development and the story were well balanced and this story was easy to jump into and still end up feeling drawn to the characters.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this.
I read this book, unaware that this is the second book in the Kate Downey Medical Mystery Series. Despite this, this was still an interesting read, where someone is targeting people who have a certain type of implanted defibrillator, by causing the device to misfire.
This medical mystery has me guessing all the way through up till the end. I would recommend this to those who are looking for a good medical mystery

Butter my biscuits!! After reading Euliano's first book before it came out, I KNEW she was going to become a favourite medical thriller author for me, and she's nailed it once again with her second book! I gobbled this up faster that my dog, Tink inhaling cheese! The absolute love I have for this author, her plot, knowledge of medical terms & throwing in the utmost fantastic type of thriller & suspense is immense. How she weaves the true mystery and suspense into such a way that catches you so off guard when she delivers the final course is nothing short of incredible. It's absolutely mind-blowing as you follow along and you THINK you know how it's going to unravel, until she shocks you with a defibrillator with twist after twist leaving you mind-boggled! For all my medical thriller junkies such as I, you NEED to read this!

4/5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers, and Tammy Euliano for allowing me to read and review this book.
Misfire is the second book in the Kate Downey Medical Mystery series. Even though you do not necessarily have to read the first book in this series to understand and enjoy this one, I would highly recommend reading it. The first book is just as amazingly written as this one, and has amazing characters that you will grow to love and hate. And reading the first book in this series will just help solidify those feelings and it will help you understand the intentions, motivations, and reasonings behind things the characters are doing.
I am not always into medical mysteries because it seems like authors never do any research on accuracies in the medical field; however, from my knowledge it seems that Tammy Euliano did her research for this series.
The mystery is captivating and the characters are well-written and interesting. This is definitely a book you will have a hard time putting down.
I would recommend this series to anyone who likes medical mysteries, strong female characters, and a fast read.
Misfire is the second book in the Kate Downey medical mystery series by Tammy Euliano. I had enjoyed the first book Fatal Intent and so was eager to see how the story has been taken forward. I remember I had not been very impressed with Kate Downey in the previous book and also felt that the book is a slow- burner which took a while to get into.
I am happy to say I actually liked Misfire much more. This story starts about 6 months after Fatal Intent with Kate discovering that a patient's new implanted defibrillator, a device supposed to help the patient's heart, fired up unnecessarily and in a dangerous way. As Kate's dear aunt is one of the patients on whom the device has been planted, Kate starts investigating whether this was a one time mishap or a real problem with the device.
This takes Kate again on a path of investigation and trying to learn shade exactly is happening; the fact that the people surrounding the device manufacturing company start behaving strangely only pulls her more in spite of the many warnings from her police acquaintance Garner. With Christian O'Donnell back in the scene, an amateur sleuthing club is again formed with Kate's aunt Irm as their primary driving force.
Why is the device misfiring? Is there a malfunction or is it deliberate? And who is behind the whole fiasco? We get the answers to these questions in a story of love, revenge, hate and evil intentions. Author Tammy has managed to create a compelling story which manages to be both intriguing and thrilling. The story sets off at a brisk pace and mostly never falters. The romance element has also been woven into the story in a very organic and natural way without taking away from the tense narrative.
Most of all, I really loved Aunt Irm and would love to read more books in this series just for her. The medical aspects kept me interested as always and I loved that I got to learn new things. This series has now officially entered my to-watch-for list and can't wait to read more in the series.

I was really intrigued by this synopsis and had high hopes for the book. Ultimately, the writing doesn't hold my attention as much as I had expected, and regardless of the effort the author put into the character detail, I am struggling to hold onto the details and form a connection with the protagonist. That might be a me thing, and it just doesn't work for me— giving this 3 stars for concept and intrigue.
I loved this inside look at the medical device business, written by a practicing anesthesiologist. The language and characters felt very authentic! In the book, a newly manufactured defibrillator misfires, endangering both lives and corporate profits. Kate Downey, the anesthesiologist who’s the main character, investigates along with her friend Nikki, a cardiologist, and her love interest Christian, a lawyer. Meanwhile, Kate’s beloved Aunt Irm becomes a potential victim of the device. An exciting, absorbing read!
This is a medical suspenseful thriller with numerous twists and turns.
Implanted defibrilators with a remote access control are used as a weapon and manipulation tools.
Dr. Kate Downey is a hospital anasthesiologist whose aunt - Aunt Irm - has such a device -
will untangle this complicated web of mystery and unanswered questions in attempt to save many lives.
I personally enjoyed the storyline as my mom har arrythmia and has been told she will need a device like this in a near future. The story has science, suspense and romance - how is that not a wonderful combination?!
I started suspecting the ending of the story and wasn't wrong but the book keeps you intrigued and wanting more chapter after chapter. I enjoyed the supporting characters of Christian, Aunt Irma, and Garner but some things in the story were not believable to me as well as Kate was not as relatable as I would have enjoyed.
I did not read the first book in the series and felt I missed out on understanding of some things and would recommend you complete the Fatal Intent prior to reading the Misfire.
The synopsis for this sounded really good - there is a new type of AICD (a pacemaker/defibrillator combo) on the market called Kadence. It has been implanted in about 60 people, with great success. Then one week, people’s hearts began stopping. Dr. Kate Downey finds this alarming, especially as her Aunt Irm has a Kadence implant, and starts investigating.
I love medical mysteries and thrillers, and I don’t see them enough - especially not written by an actual doctor. The premise of this was great … the execution, not so much. I was immediately turned off by the writing. Sometimes that changes and/or I get used to it. I never did with this book; it had no flow, every sentence felt stilted, and it played things unbelievably safe.
As the story went on, there became more and more characters that were tedious to keep up with. This book is actually the second book in a series, and I hate reading anything out of order. However, this said it could be read as a standalone book - and it could, but there were many references to the first book (that I haven’t read) and maybe that’s why I didn’t care about the main character - that, or because for a doctor, she sure takes a lot of time off to run around playing detective. She also neglected her dog a lot - no bueno.
This just wasn’t it for me, but I’ve seen some great reviews so far, so I may be an outlier. I figured out the ending way too soon, the red herrings were quite obvious, and I didn’t like that writing style. Great premise, but it’s a no for me. 2.5 stars, rounded up, for a book that kept me reading but never got me excited.
(Thank you to Oceanview Publishing, Tammy Euliano, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.)
Misfire is an interesting medical mystery by Tammy Euliano. Someone is targeting people who have a certain type of implanted defibrillator, by causing the device to misfire. Will they figure out who is behind this heinous crime before more people get hurt? Read Misfire to find out.
This was a fascinating and yet disturbing story all at the same time. It had me guessing who all was behind it up to the end. I recommend Misfire to anyone who is looking for a good medical mystery.
Misfire by Tammy Euliano is the second in her Kate Downey Medical Mystery series, but can definitely be read as a standalone (which is what I did). And, it is fan-freaking-tastic! I mean it, this book is unputdownable and unforgettable. I LOVED it to bits!
Okay, so there is a medical device that can save your life, which is great, right? Except, that it can 'misfire' and wind up killing you. Say what? Yep, there is some sort of malfunction happening in the devices and Kate is terrified - her beloved Aunt just had the devices implanted. Yikes! And, that is all I will share about the story, because you HAVE to read it for yourself to find out what the frack is happening. Let me just say...whoa!
Euliano has written a captivating story that is chock full of mystery, medical jargon, excellent characters, and a slow-going story that will keep you up late into the night. It is a definite must-read! Make sure to check it out!
Misfire by Tammy Euliano is a medical thriller and second in a series. Kadence is a new type of implanted defibrillator that corrects a heart problem called afib. This is an Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrilator (AICD)
Dr. Kate Downey is an anesthesiologist and when one of her patient's AICD misfires, thus the title, and nearly causes her patients life she begins to get concerned. She along with the cardiologist, Nikki Yarborough they need to figure out what happened. Kate is doubly concerned as her Great Aunt Erm has one of these devices. It is kind of scary because I have a similiar device.
She is very concerned and long with another friend, Christian O'Donnell they find that these are not just misfires, they are done intentially, but why? As they investigate further, they realize that it is done out of greed and money. It is now a race against time to stop whoever is triggering the misfires. As time goes on everyone is in danger from the person or persons doing this.
As a side note Dr Kate recently lost her husband and newborn daughter, Christian also lost his wife and child, killed in an accident. These two are drawn together in their grief and there is a budding romance going on also.
I have always enjoyed medical thrillers, and this was a good one. Well written, lots of suspense and a surprise ending. Oh yes, did I mention Great Aunt Erm? What a character this lady is, very savvy and downright funny! I had not read the first book as some suggested but was able to get to know the characters from the first book. It did help that the author is a Professor of Anesthesiology, she knows her stuff!
I really enjoyed this book and intend to read the 1st in the series and look forward to the third one, if there is one.
I give it 5 stars!
Dr. Kate Downey is an anesthesiologist. When she witnesses 4 patients, all with Kadence AICD implants, receive a misfire shock at the worst possible time in the heart rhythm all within one week she becomes concerned something is very wrong with the new devices. It especially concerns her since her beloved Aunt Irm has a Kadence and was one of those patients. But what is causing the misfires, why is the cardiology department so reluctant to warn the patients with the devices, and is it a coincidence that the company that owns the patent for Kadences is about to be sold?
This is evidently the 2nd in a series, but I was able to follow along just fine without having read the first book featuring Dr. Kate and Aunt Irm as the sleuths helping Lieutenant Garner solve a case (and lawyer Christian O’Donnell along for the mystery). I liked all the medical details but also didn’t feel like they overwhelmed the story. Aunt Irm is a hoot, and Dr. Kate is a likable character to follow around. I would enjoy hanging out with them for more mysteries (though I don’t think I’ll read the first since this book mentioned too many spoilers of what happened in that story). The mystery kept me guessing, though I did have some ideas that turned out to be correct, I wasn’t sure until the big reveals. It was well-written with a good balance of mystery and character development. The author obviously did a good amount of research for all the medial bits, behind the scenes workings of a hospital, AICDs, and the typical daily life of an anesthesiologist. Definitely recommended to armchair sleuths who like sciency mysteries.
Notes on content: About 8 minor swears. No sexual content beyond a few kisses. Two affairs are mentioned as having happened but absolutely no details. There are surgeries and medical procedures described. A huge interstate car crash results in multiple deaths and serious injuries, some of which are described as they come into Kate’s hospital. Heart rhythm issues are front and center. Both Christian and Kate have lost a spouse and child to traumatic events. Some people related to Christian’s loss come up again and a murder/suicide happens off page. The final showdown involves several fatal shootings and a premature loss of a baby.
I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
First, I want to thank Tammy Euliano, Oceanview Publishing, NetGalley and Author Marketing Experts for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
YES!! If you know me you know I love a good medical thriller! Tammy Euliano definitely satisfied my craving with her latest Misfire! It was incredibly fast paced, fascinating, intense, suspenseful, and even a little bit of romance intertwined.
The graphic artists who created Misfire’s cover are geniuses! The image captures your attention and makes you want to know what the book is about.
Misfire is the follow up to Tammy Euliano’s Fatal Intent. I will admit that I had not had the opportunity to read that one. However, this book can be read as a standalone as Tammy recaps the first book. Let me tell you that I was intrigued and shocked by the recap.
Having a medical background (I was a Medical Assistant and Medical Office Assistant back in the day) I had an understanding of the medical terms and situations which made it a very interesting read.
It was much appreciated that Tammy reached out to her doctor and lawyer friends for their insight and expertise on various subjects.
Governor Michaelson’s storyline was one of my favorite storylines within the book. However, there was one incident that involved him that was totally uncalled for and shocked me! My heart went out to those involved.
After reading Tammy’s book you will realize why the book was called Misfire!
