I was finally able to get my hands on a copy of By the Book by Jasmine Guillory and I absolutely loved it! This book club kit is a perfect companion to the book and asks some really great questions as well as having an authors interview, what to read next and some fun exercises as well. I definitely recommend this kit to discuss with family, friends, book club, or even just asking yourself these questions! It’s also very visually compelling and put together very nicely.
This was such a fun and clever idea to add helpful ideas and discussion topics for the book. I really liked this and thought it gave more depth to the book itself.

By The Book by Jasmine Guillory
By the Book is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast but in modern time. Izzy, works in the publishing world and even thought she thinks it’s her dream job she is realizing is not a dream any longer.
Beau can be annoying, rude and unpleasant. Things change when Izzy decided to help him finish his book and stay in his Santa Barbara home. Things turn around when they get to know each other and spend time… Izzy realizes that he is different than what he portrays.
Their sessions turn into a friendship and a romance they didn’t think could happen. The way they help each other find themselves and their voice is special.
Although I love Disney stories and love The Beauty and the Beast I don’t enjoy retells as much. I feel like even though they are modernized, they lose that touch all the stories have. I did enjoy the book and the story line and I’m looking into her other books as well.
Do you enjoy the Disney original books or do you enjoy a retell as well?
Thank you @netgalley and Hyperion for the ARC
Thanks for helping me lead my book club for this book! Loved the charcuterie board suggestions, I will be preparing us lots of snacks!
This brought good topics and activities to do with a book club that will be fun and have everyone enjoying them. Cute bookmarks were included, loved that! And I loved the extra books to read next based on book type.
I'm not sure what type of feedback to provide with this. I read and review books, but not Book Club Kits. As far as kits go, I would say this one is appropriate for the audience it is for. If this were something I would utilize, I can see it being sufficient.
Used this for my book club and it was so helpful. I didn't have to think hard about what discussion we would have because this booklet provided it.
This is by far one of the best book club kits I have seen. I love all the additional extras that go beyond the book discussion. I will say I would have liked more or different suggestions for further reading, they felt kinda limited. I coordinate multiple book clubs and I love when books have kits or even discussion questions and/or reading guides. Yes, as readers we can come up with our own questions, but these kinds of documents can provide additional inspiration.
This was amazing! Just having joined a book club, you never know what to expect or the flow of it but this kit helps guide how a book is discussed, questions that pertain to the specific book, and even fun activities (cutting out those bookmarks!)
This book club kit was extensive! It offers an author interview, discussion questions that offer a wonderful opportunity to discuss different aspects of the book with your fellow readers, a discussion about the cover, beautiful printable book marks, and a variety of activities that tie in the book's plot. These include writing prompts and advice to authors that are pulled right from the book. There is also a fun snack section where the kit recommends snacks to bring to your book club meeting and a drink recipe; which was such a great addition!
This was a great book club kit. I loved the insights on this particular piece because it was a step off from Jasmine Guillory's usual writing to be part of the Meant to Be Series. I was glad to have some additional insights from her about that process, plus other thought provoking questions about the story. I enjoyed this kit as an add on to the book, even though in this case, I didn't have a club myself to discuss it with!
How did I not know Book Club Kits existed? The last meeting I hosted for my book club would have been way more exciting if I had (shoutout to my books make the world go round crew). My introduction to Book Club Kits is serendipitously through a book I really enjoyed, “By the Book” by Jasmine Guillory.
Let’s get the main surprise out of the way: this is not just about discussion questions. There are discussion questions, yes, and they are excellent ones. However, then there’s a whole gamut of really fun things. Because they are so lovely, I am actually going to list them right here while trying to keep some of the suspense intact:
- Two interview/Q&A’s, one with the author and another with the book cover designer
- A printable gift for you, the reader!
- Writing tips & prompts
- Recipes and food guides (I actually should have expected nothing less from a book kit for one of Jasmine Guillory’s works)
- Recommendations on what to read if you enjoyed reading “By the Book” or any of its themes
- AND MORE
While you work on getting your copy of this kit, I’m going to go ahead and read my next kit so I can officially become the best book club host.
Great companion for book clubs who are reading by The book. Great tips to start the discussion about The book.
I thought this book cute was so cute. I think it would be beneficial for people involved in book clubs and just discussing this book in general.
Fairy tale retelling? Check. Diverse cast of characters? Check. Would I recommend to others? Check.
I thoroughly enjoyed this unique retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It was also my first Jasmine Guillory book (shocker, I know!)
The book kit contained an interview with the author Jasmine Guillory and with the cover designer Marci Senders, it gave us. We've got two beautiful sets of bookmarks. I found out what my pen name would be. We've got questions and suggestions to discuss the book.
As a nice plus, there are several recipes, and my favourite: book recommendations!
I love these book club kits! They make hosting book club night 100x easier! The discussion questions are my favorite part because they are thoughtful and insightful to the book!
The kit was a good guide. I have never used a book club kit before, but look forward to using them more and more.
Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for the kit.
Awesome and extremely user friendly kit. Compelling, engaging it drew us deeper into the By the Book World.

I thought this was packaged nicely for a fun book club/night out. While it had some discussion questions, a few author interview segment, writing prompts, and some fun recipes, however, I guess I was expecting more of a book and discussion guide (goes deeper in depth).
I would recommend this for a more casual book club that's looking for some fun ways to have a night out whether virtual or in person. A good beverage and snack board could be very appealing.
