Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
I enjoy Iliza Shlesinger's stand up comedy, so I requested this book. Sometimes she can go over the top and border on annoying with tangents and voices, but overall she's entertaining. This book was very much like that.
I appreciated the personal experience reflections on miscarriage and women's health. Not so much a fan of the nationalism in the current climate where this coutnry is shitting on women's rights.
Her elder millenial views and opinions hit for me, even though I am a "recessionist" millenial. Trends, pop culture, experiences. Similar nostalgia. The sleepover section was 100% on.
Overall, a good listen in the author's own voice. 4/5 stars.
Iliza has such a unique way of storytelling that I was impressed to see she found a way to translate into print - asides and tangents included. Such an enjoyable read and glimpse into her life, loves and struggles.
I read about 50% of this book before ending. I enjoyed Iliza's perspective on life, and I appreciated that she did not hold back. However, in her quest to not care about hurting anyone's feelings, she came off a bit "screw you" to even the reader. I would think the reader of her book would already be Ok with topics that are a bit off-kilter or not PC. Her abrasiveness was a bit much at times. I did really like her discussion about her miscarriage.
I remember watching an Iliza Shlesinger stand up special on Netflix years ago and finding her drunk girl party goblin stunts hilarious. She was relatable and funny. But that was a long time ago. When I saw her new book All Things Aside I figured it had been a long time since I’ve read anything humor and hoped it would be an entertaining collection.
But I honestly should have done my research first and I may have realized that Shlesinger would not be my cup of tea anymore. In her book, she shared a few politically divisive statements that really weren’t necessary unless she actually didn’t want certain people to like her, in which case I would say she achieved that.
Then, she came off especially preachy. She kept insisting if only we would listen to her and just be nice people then our society would be so much better. Ah, yes, thank you Iliza, if only we had listened to you sooner all of our problems would be solved!
Finally, the format of her book was awful. She used this technique of having “footnotes” in the middle of paragraphs instead of at the bottom of the page so there were indented and smaller font paragraphs on basically every other page. And sometimes these “footnotes” would be over a page long. It was incredibly annoying. The current story would be interrupted to tell a side story and it just made the whole story disjointed and disrupted. The flow was completely off and I didn’t like reading this way at all.
This was my third celebrity memoir/essay collection that I’ve read in a row and it was unfortunately my third disappointment. I couldn’t wait to finish and move on to something totally different!
Thank you to NetGalley and Abrams for an ARC of this book.
Overall, I really enjoyed this. It felt like reading a script for Iliza Shlesinger's stand up and it was great. I think it was definitely worth a read and people who like Iliza Shlesigner will love this.
I thought I knew what to expect when I opted to read this book. I knew I wasn't going to be 100% interested in it, but I like Iliza's stand-up so thought it'd be a break from my usual reads. Going to be completely honest. By the time I got to the farting, it became really difficult to want to keep reading. Just not my taste.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, ABRAMS and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Funny, engaging and as charming as Iliza. Truly enjoyable for fans of the aforementioned and fans of comedy.
This felt like just reading a stand up special. I didn't really see the need for all the "asides". They all flowed together with what was before and after so I found them unnecessary. Some parts were funny but most was just a retread of trying to please everyone by pleasing no one
