A fascinating look at how emotional interpretation differs between cultures and what this means on a psychological/sociological level.

This book was a lot more academic than I expected. It was interesting to learn about how different emotions vary across cultures, and I felt a bit like I was back in psychology class. Not something I'd necessarily recommend to people who aren't interested in more dense material, but I enjoyed it.

I thought this concept was so interesting, and I really learned so much from this book! I found it kind of annoying that the default comparison was to white middle class Americans. There are so many different categories of cultures and ethnicities just in the United States alone, so it was frustrating to see most of them be pushed to the side. Latin Americans weren't even mentioned until halfway through the book at all. I know there are so many different cultures that can be mentioned, but this is such a large category of people that I found it odd they were not mentioned sooner.
At the same time, I did learn a ton about the way various cultures prioritize different aspects of emotions. This book gave me so much to think about, and I really appreciated that.

I found Between Us to be a really interesting read. Intercultural communication has fascinated me my entire life and was a major part of my academic and professional careers; this book is a good, all-around study that I would recommend for someone who is new to the study of culture, particularly with respect to the way emotions are defined, used, and/or expressed in various cultures and why stumbling blocks may exist when trying to understand another's cultural expression of emotion (or lack thereof). At times it got a bit heavy with some of the research and academic concepts, but the deep personal interest that the author had in the subject matter really came through in the writing and made the heavy bits manageable.

This book is well written with many interesting descriptions of various cultures' interpersonal interactions regarding showing or not showing emotions. The author's writing is confusing in a few places. Cultures around the world and in different parts of the US are included. The book seems to lean a bit heavily on a white educated person's perspective (the author is a white well educated Northern European immigrant to the US who has resided many years in the US.). Worth buying and reading for the wide range of cultures and to some extent classes from around the world.
