Totally gripping
Detective Chief Inspector Jane Phillips has been assigned a weird murder case, the victim was shot in the eye and his tooth removed. It mirrors a past crime but is it linked and if it is, what’s the motive?
I totally loved this book and it caught my attention right from the very start
Jane and her team work well together and form a unit that is stronger than anything, they have trust and loyalty which only develops throughout the story. I think that part of what drew me further into the book was that something happens that makes the reader more attached to Jane and seeing more of her personality come out, some good and some not so good. This sounds super vague and apologies for that, I’m trying to write without spoilers!
I was hooked with this book, the oddity of the murders and the characters involved that I read it over 2 nights, and way past bedtime, because I didn’t want to put it down. The story drew me in, with so many twists and turns that at times it was hard to keep up, but as a reader, that was truly fabulous and had me guessing right up to the end
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a story that will pull you in and won’t let go
Seventh in this series featuring DCI Jane Phillips. Complex plot with lots of twists and turns. Jane has lots of decisions to make in both her work and personal life. A good ,engrossing read.

I really enjoy the Detective Jane Phillips series. She has progressed over the series in her career and personal relationships. Her new boss is amazing and deals with all the administrative and politics things which would hamper her ability to solve cases.
The current cases are connected with one from 30 years past in their method. The team goes to work trying to find a connection. Most of the players seem to be criminals / mobsters. They just aren't nice people and all seem pretty smug like they can't be caught and have expensive lawyers too. Jane takes some crazy chances and while I know she wanted to solve the case and catch the criminals, I didn't like how dangerous some things were.
She is settled into a relationship with Adam. He wants to move in together and she keeps putting him off. We never really learn why. They eventually work things out and she actually takes a sabbatical to spend more time with him.
The cases were not easily solved for many reasons. The criminals are long experienced and some are crafty. Again they have crack legal representation. But once the detectives knew who committed the crimes, they could go after the weak link. One instance was helped by Jane predicting who might be a future victim and putting eyes on them. So the cases were solved by smart evidence and data collection in the end which was quite satisfying.
This book by OMJ Ryan is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and the previous novels by this author. and features DCI Jane Phillips and team who investigate a case that is identical to one thirty years previously. This is book 7 in the thriller series involving her, and would recommend that readers also start at book 1 of the series, all books excellent
I've read others in this series so knew what to expect between the covers of this book. There is no dip in standard and the characters remain as flawed and believable as others in this genre. The main character is reluctant to take the next step in her personal life and this is threaded through the story. The villain of the piece is a cold, calculated character and there is a reasonable amount of doubt as to who has committed the crimes as the book moves on. When all is tied up at the end, there are no loose threads and it is a good resolution. A well plotted book that will definitely continue to engage fans of the series and hopefully attract new ones. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
Two identical murders, thirty years apart. This is a book that once I picked up, it totally consumed me. I ended up reading it in one evening as I was so absorbed by what was in front of me and I had to see how everything was going to end… An absolute must-read!
Two identical murders but 30 years apart.. The first one was never solved but is the second one a copy cat or the original murderer back? DCI Jane Phillips and her team have their work cut out to solve this mystery. Well-written police procedural with plenty of twists and turns. The stories of this specific police team get better and better. Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Gangs and underworld story's are my favourite. Mixed in with police procedural stories made it an epic storyline for me
I really loved it
DCI Jane Phillips and her team are investigating the killing of a known gangster whose murder mirrors that of one from thirty years ago. Because it is the same MO and the first victim was also a gangster, not to mention friends with the current victim, the team can't deny that this could be the same killer. The brutality in which the murders were carried out aligns with the gangland connection which itself makes it tough for the authorities to get any clear answers from the relatives and associates of the victims. The family of the current victim won't even acknowledge that the man had shady dealings, fooling no one. And one of their top suspects is also one of their slipperiest - nothing ever sticks to him, and yet again he may be untouchable.
As if it wasn't hard enough to get anywhere with the investigation, a harrowing attack is carried out against someone close to Jane. Is she being warned off looking too deeply into the gang members? After all, how much focus can she give the case when she might lose someone? And what will the perpetrators do next if she doesn't back off?
Gangs and underworld dealings aren't my favorite subjects, but it's manageable in this story. Jane's personal storyline helps to balance out all the nefariousness of the criminals and highlight how decent people like her have to interact with society's worst and somehow come out unscathed. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series, which will hopefully be a little less gangster!
November 5, 1993 Archie Boothroyd is murdered during a fireworks display that covers the killers tracks.
Current day. Detective Jane Phillips is home with her boyfriend Adam, a surgeon. She gets a call from her team that gangster Paul Bradley has been shot during the fireworks display. He’s killed the same way as Boothroyd was.
The investigation leads to other gang members from the 90s. Is this a gang related killing or is someone trying to make it look like one?
Who is responsible for these murders and will the team be able to stop them before others are killed.
This is my first book by this author. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series but didn’t feel lost. I look forward to reading future installments.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Book review : Deadly Night by OMJ Ryan is a wonderful , mystery thrilling book which is Book 7 of the detective Jane Phillips series.
The story is about two identical murders done thirty years apart. Phillips when took the case was in a haphazard situation which was difficult to sort out. In this mess, lots of things suffered, her health, her personal relationship and was about to loose his love when he got attacked.
Her team was ever a big support to her . I was totally hooked up by the way it is written and wanted to know how she solved the case. Every chapter of the book intrigued me to read next.
The story is about two murders of gangster Archie Boothroyd and Paul Bradley who were murdered identically. It's interesting to know is this the work of a copycat or the original killer finally returned? Many such questions arise in this investigation and worth reading to unfold the facts slowly.....
I am thankful to netgalley and inkubator books for giving me a chance to read the book. I loved reading this book and recommend this to all mystery book lovers.
Happy Reading!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Deadly Night, the seventh novel to feature DCI Jane Phillips of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crimes Unit.
When Paul Bradley is shot dead in his home, Jane thinks the crime scene is familiar and soon links it to the murder of Archie Boothroyd I. 1993. Bradley and Boothroyd were friends and when a third friend is found dead in the same way Jane and the team find themselves deep in Manchester’s gangland and it’s culture.
I thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Night, which is an exciting read, full of twists, turns and tension. I hesitate to call it a police procedural because procedure is the last thing on Jane’s mind when someone close to her is attacked.
I liked the premise of the novel, thirty years between identical crimes and the ensuing question of the murderer’s identity, copycat or the same person? It lives up to the promise with Jane contending with not just the murders but gangland feuds and tit for tat violence. As a bonus the author brings the violence close to home and throws in an IPCC investigation into her behaviour. Honestly, there’s hardly a minute to catch a breath. It all culminates in a satisfying conclusion with all the bad guys getting their comeuppance, but how that is achieved is even better because even the good guys can get a little underhand (in a legal way, obviously) to bring the case home.
It’s fair to say that Jane loses the plot in this novel and isn’t thinking straight. It is very well done and very relatable, but a bit frustrating for the investigation and the reader when her actions could derail it. Still, as expected, it all works out well, despite some heart stopping moments.
Deadly Night is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
I’ve been following this series since the very beginning, and it is one of those detective thriller series that just keeps delivering. I couldn’t resist adding book number seven Deadly Night to my shelves, and I can now confirm that it is without doubt yet another successful Detective Jane Phillips sequel. There is just something about the writing style, plot and characters that makes you want to keep turning those pages, and I can definitely recommend this series in general if you are a fan of the genre.
While you can technically read Deadly Night as a stand-alone, I wouldn't recommend it as you will be missing out on character background and the dynamics between the different members of the team. And you definitely won't understand the references to Fox if you haven't suffered through her behavior in the previous books! On top of this, book number seven hits close to home, so it's even more important to be up-to-date with the character development in the previous books. Every single book in this series has been great so far though, so they are well worth your time if you need to catch up.
There is no doubt that Deadly Night has another intriguing plot. The story starts literally with a bang as you read a flashback to a 1993 crime from the killer's POV... And things stay interesting afterwards as Jane Phillips and her team are asked to investigate the murder of a known gangster murdered in the exact same way as that crime almost thirty years ago. While it's true that I had my suspicions early on, it's also true that I never guessed the full truth and the plot itself is engaging and suspenseful enough to keep turning those pages. Especially when things become really personal... I most definitely didn't see THAT plot twist coming.
As always, I really enjoyed the banter between Jane Phillips and her team, and it's always a pleasure to spend more time with them. The writing reads like a train, and I was able to finish Deadly Night in no time at all. A true pageturner and a very engaging detective thriller sequel! I do wonder if this will be the last one after how things ended...

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
