The main character was quite immature, a little on the dim side, and rather cliche, hollow. She was not at all to my liking.
I couldn’t connect with this book. It was slow paced. The writing style wasn’t my taste. The ending did pick up the pace. An average thriller
This is a real twister with many, many fascinating characters - all of who, see, to be unreliable narrators. It makes for a tense ride as the story progresses to an alarming and dramatic climax.
Kate has left her job because of a man and has begun at University to train to be a music teacher, something she has always longed to be. She can’t afford very much rent and so finds herself in a rundown house with Amy, the strange landlady. Considering that Kate was a mature student she should have had more sense and seen the red flags but instead was just pathetic and just went with the flow, ignoring her own needs. In other words a wet lettuce/doormat which very quickly became irritating. I liked the start, didn’t like the interminable middle and found the end unbelievable considering how the main character had been throughout the book. Anyone who likes slow burners and relentless gloom will enjoy this tale!
Kate has relocated to continue with her degree in music at a prestigious college. Broke, she is thrilled to find a room to rent with Amy in the home that Amy shared with her now-deceased mother. Though initially unsettled by sleeping in a dead woman's room, Kate settles in quickly, starts, school, gets a job, and starts making friends.
But things quickly start to devolve as Kate's performance anxiety and stress levels rise. Is everything as she perceives it, or is her mental stability even shakier than Kate thought?
A gloomy but edgy read, told in the first person. If you don't like witnessing someone unravel, this isn't the book for you.
Moving in with someone in a new area is always as scary as it is exciting. That is, until things start to get really strange.
I liked this story and was able to dive in so thoroughly, I finished it in one day. It’s a keep you guessing kind of “thriller”. I did find it to be more mystery and suspense as I think I’ve been greatly desensitized to the thriller world. Although, I may not have found it thrilling, I did find it to be a good mystery that will keep you reading until you figure it out - and why. Recommended for sure.
Nothing is as it seems in this book and Amy s unbelievably creepy! This was a scary book! Recommended.
The Tenant by Angela Lester is a psychological thriller sure to give you chills! Amy, the landlady, initially appears as a friendly figure, looking after her tenants with motherly affection. But when Kate, a young woman relocating for music school, moves in with Amy, things take a darker turn.
Kate quickly discovers Amy’s strange and overly protective behavior, leaving her questioning her safety. She begins to investigate her situation, delving into the history of the old house she now calls home.
The plot builds up to a chilling climax as Kate finds out the truth behind the haunted and sinister past of the house and its inhabitants. Angela Lester manages to build tension with every page, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the last page.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers like K L Slater, Jane Renshaw and Teresa Driscoll, then The Tenant should definitely be added to your list! It is sure to leave you both enthralled and chilled at the same time!
A disappointing read. Couldn’t relate to the characters, the story felt rushed, flat and very repetitive. Not “gripping” and I didn’t feel any suspense as I was expecting. Very predicable ending.
The Tenant focuses on a woman named Kate who is attempting to start over in a new town and follow her dream of being a music teacher. She needs a place to reside while going to college and looks at a house. The landlady Amy was really warm and welcoming, so she decides to rent a room there. At first things go well, then as Kate settles into her school routine and makes friends, Amy becomes rather concerned about Kate's wellbeing. She thinks Kate is taking on too much and insists that she rests. As Kate pushes through school, part-time work at the library and maintaining a social life, she starts to feel burnt out and ill constantly. She begins to realize Amy is not what she seems and races to uncover what's really going on before it's too late.
This book had a lot going on. But it was easy to keep up and stay interested in the plot. The characters were well developed. I enjoyed the plot twists and was sad when the book ended. Thank you to NetGalley & Inkubator Books for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Perfect rainy day book! I was throughly creeped out but the ending was easy to guess. I was entertained every page and I loved how the twist was introduced
Well that was creepy. Quite enjoyable read. Look forward to more from this author. Thanks NetGalley and thank you Ms. Lester. Very much recommend.
Oh. That wasn’t a fun experience. This is something I’ve read a few times before and I though that the plot would go in a different way or that it could still shook me but sadly, it didn’t. Not for me.
Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy! Hope my next read is better!
This is the story of a woman who moves to Cardiff wishing to start over. But things do not go as planned after she moves with Amy, a "protective" landlady who might be hiding something.
I thought this was an entertaining thriller. A bit predictable and not the most likable characters, but I appreciated the university/library setting and the gray, rainy weather.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. A good thriller suspense novel. Highly recommend.
I love any books to do with partners, I laws, friends, roommates - any domestic thriller books I love.
When I read the sypnosis for this one I knew I had to request a copy. I downloaded it immediately and I was hooked right from the start. The thought of sharing a home with someone who isn't all that they seem terrifies me, it really shows how unpredictable people can be that we feel we have figured out.
I enjoyed the many unexpected plot twists along the way. A gripping and addictive read for sure, request your copy now.
A big thank you to netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Kate answers an ad about an apartment and moves in. At first her new landlord Amy seems to be a nice motherly lady but she quickly turns controlling. Kate's new life quickly goes south, especially the more she tries to get away from Amy. She starts looking into the house and Amy and what she finds is shocking. The ending was shocking and overall the whole book was a great read. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.
Dark thriller that had you hooked from the off. The book was very well written. Great plot. Very exciting. Fast paced to get your heart racing. Loved this book
The Tenant is a creepy ride from start to finish. Kate is a later-in-life music college student who has given up her career as a librarian to start over. She finds a place to live with Amy whose mother has recently passed away. Right away you can feel the heavy ominous weight that has settled over the place
Slowly, Kate learns she is sleep walking and doing disturbing things in the night. Amy insists it is due to Kate’s drinking. But things are definitely not what they seem.
This was a really fun book and while I had an inkling as to what was off with these characters, the ending still provided an interesting twist.
2.5
This book just wasn't for me. It was very slow paced, repetitive, and I struggles to connect with the characters. While I do think that the author did a good job, I am a very seasoned mystery/thriller reader that needs more twists and turns in my books. I think that this book would be great for someone new to this genre.
