I thought the book was really good I enjoyed it, and it kept interest through out the whole thing. I really didn't expect the twist at the end.
I'd like to thank NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of The Tenant by Angela Lester. The synopsis of the book and the cover intrigued me, and I was thrilled to receive a digital copy for free in exchange for my honest review.
The Tenant by Angela Lester is one of those novels that would make a great movie. The storyline felt vaguely familiar, but not in a bad way. I never did predict what was happening to the main character and was surprised at the ending.
Although I enjoyed this book quite a bit, there were points in the story that were slow moving, and I became a bit impatient, wishing that something surprising would happen. Even though it was a slow burn, I was glad I stuck with it. The ending was well worth the wait. I'll definitely read other books written by Angela Lester.
All in all, I don't have anything negative to say about The Tenant by Angela Lester. I gave this book four out of five stars. I would recommend this book to those who like slow burns.
I'd be honest, I did not like this book. There was no real plot but Kate (the main character) getting drunk and wet from the rain. The chapters were far too long and the fact nothing really happened till 90% into the book didn't help me enjoy this book. I don't think I'll be reading more from this author I'm afraid.
You know when you are watching a scary movie and you just want to say "TURN AROUND"! That is how I felt reading this book.
I went from being intrigued, to asking wtf is going on.
I am torn on how to rate or review this book so I am going to just settle for "It was okay."
Amy is the perfect landlady. But she does have some ground rules…
Kate has always dreamed of a life in music. And now she’s finally done something about it – giving up her steady job, moving to the city to enroll in a degree program at a prestigious college.
Needing a place to live, she answers an ad and moves in with Amy who seems a nice lady – mothering and protective.
At first Kate is glad to have some support in this strange city, but gradually Amy’s presence becomes more and more stifling – it just seems so hard to get away from her. And every time Kate tries, something terrible happens…
As her life spirals downwards, Kate struggles to understand what’s happening. Is Amy plotting against her? Or is she simply buckling under the stress of adjusting to her new life?
Fearing for her sanity, Kate knows she needs to get some answers and begins to look into the history of the creepy old house she shares with Amy. What she finds is beyond her worst nightmares…
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own hone\st voluntary review.
This was a very British tale and therefore some of the writing was a challenge for me as an American. The main character was quite immature, a little on the dim side, and rather cliche, hollow. She was not at all to my liking. Her new roommate, however, was puzzling and I was intrigued by her intentions and identity. But in this slow burn things got both overly redundant and predictable.
tw: child abuse, substance abuse, mental health, gaslighting
Honestly, this book was not for me, it's very much a slow burn until the last 20 percent kicks in and then it starts being batshit crazy, so have patience with this one! The atmosphere was quiet creepy with the old house, but the mental illness discussion was hard to handle imo
This book definitely kept me guessing through out the book. I enjoyed the way the characters were written and the plot.
I'd be interested in reading other books by this author
Thank you so much to Netgalley, Inkubator books and Angela Lester for the ARC of this book.
Happy publishing day!
This book intrigued me from the start and i didn't quite understand what it was that drew me in, but I didn't want to stop reading. The storyline was definitely more of a slow burn but wow that ending was worth the wait.
I found the characters at times totally frustrating; how the main protagonist acted as things started to happen throughout was the most frustrating.
I enjoyed this read and devoured it in one session!
Love love love this book.
Kate needs some serious change in her life. She left her job as a librarian and decides to go back to college to get a degree in music. As a new student on a budget, she needs affordable housing. She finds a lady looking for a roommate as her mother recently passed and she has extra room. Kate is a bit iffy but she can afford it and decides to give it a go.
Of course, things start to go a bit sideways. Her new landlord Amy is a bit odd. They forge somewhat of a friendship but weird feelings are still there for Kate.
Amy is a master of gaslighting and Kate's life quickly unravels. You won't want to miss this one!
The Tenant, by Angela Lester, had an interesting plot that kept me intrigued and wanting to know more, but I struggled with some of the writing, especially the dialogue between characters. I don’t know if maybe it’s a regional thing, but I felt the dialogue stretched longer than it should is some instances and seemed very blunt. I’m not one to DNF a book, so I kept reading. I am glad I did, because I did not expect the final twist at all.
I will be posting this review to Goodreads and my IG: readwithmarci.
Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator books for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I couldn’t get into this book and it was ultimately a DNF for me. The concept sounds intriguing, but the writing style fell flat. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
I really wanted to love this book, the idea of it sounded like it could blow my mind. But the repetition and simplicity of the story had me very disappointed. I was hoping for some crazy twists, but I had pretty much figured out the ending before I got there.
Kate is a mature student, hoping to start a new life and escape the trauma of her recent past. Without a job, she chooses to be frugal and moves into a dilapidated, unkempt house with the owner, a rather reserved middle aged woman called Amy. For a few brief days, Kate is excited about her new course, her new life, her lecturers and the possibility of new friends and new relationships. Things quickly go downhill however, and Kate begins to question her sanity. In her lucid moments, she researches her symptoms, and becomes increasingly anxious. The sense of foreboding is omnipresent. The reason for her condition soon becomes clear to the reader, but unfortunately for the plot, it takes Kate much longer to figure things out.
The Perfect Landlady…?
Amy - the seemingly perfect landlady. Kate - a wanting tenant. When Kate moves in she thinks Amy just lovely, a mother figure perhaps, really just what she needs. It’s not too long before Kate’s attitude begins to waver. Kate needs to take another look at this creepy house and another look at Amy herself. Tense suspense with an intriguing premise and, whilst characters were rather thin, a compelling narrative.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I am a hudge fan of thrillers and I enjoy reading books that slowly build up to an intense ending, and this was definetly one of those.
The only thing is that the story was fairly predictable and easy to see, at least for me, what is going to happen or what is really happening. That just might be because I read a lot of thrillers and pretty much can expect what happens next.
Overall, this was an interesting and enjoyable read and I am very much so looking forward to reading more books written by Angela Lester in the future.
Really enjoyed it. Its your standard creepy domestic noir and it's quite predictable but it's so well written that you won't even mind. You won't want to put it down, a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon
This book had an excellent storyline, however I had a hard time with the naivety of the main character. Felt very repetitive, while still not having any clue what was happening. Also as someone who is not interested in music, I had a hard time getting through all of the talk of her musical education.
Fearing for her sanity, Kate knows she needs to get some answers and begins to look into the history of the creepy old house she shares with Amy. What she finds is beyond her worst nightmares… Another one I could not put down and devoured in one sitting. I absolutely recommend this book. Be ready for an afternoon or evening of completely neglecting any chores as this one will have you hooked within the first chapter.
I like the book and read it all in one day because it was hard to put down. It's well written and I had chills while getting into the characters.
