I loved the concept of this book which is why I requested it, however, the writing was a little poor which was difficult to get past and enjoy the story.
I find horror most effective when things are alluded to, rather than shown, as it adds to the creepy atmosphere but this book didn’t really do this, things were too robotic and obvious.
I went into this book with such good expectations as the concept had me so intrigued, unfortunately this wasn’t good.
The writing style didn’t work for me personally and the story just lacked so much. It didn’t seem “horror” to me and I was left disappointed.
This book is hard for me to review with out spoilers, but I will do my best. Frist off I got the book from Netgalley for an honest review. Second this book has a lot of triggers, rape, sexual abuse, torture, causing other harm, metal health problems, religion, police brutality, there problem more and I'm drawing a blank.. With that said this book got to me I really got in to the convocation this book created and i remember sitting with my husband quoting this book at lunch one day with him. With this said it all so made me angary and not that oh i hate the writing more like I hated what the characters had to go though because some of our characters has gone though some terrible things in the past and my heart breaks for the characters even though they aren't real. Now this book is said to be horror and yes their horrifying thing going on I would call it a thriller more then anything person Over all even though this was a slow book for me to read I still felt like this book was a good book and I liked the writing. Over all I gave this book 4 stars out of five
Starts out rather rape-y. Honor kills four of seven ambushers and injures the others. Then she makes a sacrifice to the Morrigan. Not really a horror story.
I gave this a three out of five stars. I enjoyed the story but it took a while to read this. This was a very slow read so keep this in mind if you decide to pick this up. The story also fell flat too.
Though I enjoyed some parts of the book but in overall, there is not much of this that makes it outstanding. The author tries to explain the events / characters in details but to the point of overdoing it which makes me lose my interest everytime.
For those who is just starting on reading horror books, this might hook you and enjoy it. Otherwise, this might become an ordinary and fast read for you.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately this book was just not for me. I dnf’d about 40% in.
The concept was originally what drew me to the book but I feel it wasn’t explored very well. I didn’t feel it had a strong fit in the horror genre.
I think this is due to the writing style, which was very unimaginative and bland. I felt like I was reading a shopping list. There was not much descriptive, active language going on and so unfortunately I got quite bored.
I'm sorry to say, but I didn't find it to be "Horror" genre, Occult, yes. Horror? Not at all. Unfortunately, this book was another miss and just not for me. I couldn't get into the story. The concept is phenomenal though.
I have faith in this author, okay? The premise of the book is amazing and the characters are all intriguing.
What lost me on occasion was the over-detailing certain scenes. Sometimes the tangent went on a bit too long for my liking.
However, I did still enjoy most of the book and I do see a bright future ahead for this author.
This is quite honestly in my opinion …terrible. A very poor attempt at ‘shocking’ horror. Between the covers of this book is just a poorly written, swear fest. I don’t know how many times an author can swear or mention rape in the first chapter but there has been a world record attempt here it seems.
I will be honest. I didn’t read past the first chapter. By the end of the first I just couldn’t see how the writing style was going to change. The whole premise seemed really cool involving pagans vs christians and the occult. But that struggles to even show in what is a ludicrous opening involving over sexualised women and ludicrous scenarios.
I’m really going to struggle to say more in what is a book with what seems like an interesting premise but ultimately awful in its execution.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book at all. Whether because of the writing or the poorly developed characters, I am unable to give it a good review. Just my opinion.
This book was….not for me! The idea behind it is what initially drew me to this book, however the execution of this interesting plot was subpar.
Ideally we want to experience a sensory connection to a story. I want to feel like I am there witnessing the story unfold. It felt more like reading an essay.
I was not hooked as I’d assumed I’d be but I will stand by the fact the author has an amazing mind for writing. Their creativity and imagination alone will ensure I give their other books a shot as well. This just wasn’t the one for me.
An interesting mystery centered around Christianity and Pagan culture, with some possession, gun fights and politics all mixed in. I enjoyed reading this book, and it held my attention, but at times, I found the amount of details about the different religions overwhelming. I felt that those tangents really took me out of the story. I liked the characters though and that's what kept me reading until the end.
Dark, disturbing and mysterious, I was gripped right from the start and read it really quickly. Unpredictyable and kept me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed it.
This book was… not good. The story was interesting and I just wish the writing had matched the imagination behind it. Estes was *telling* the story rather than showing it to us- in chapter two, a character was drunk and “sat/fell” onto the couch. The book couldn’t keep my attention and I struggled to get through it. I was bummed because I was so into the idea of Nightshade!
I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. It kept me hooked from beginning to end. Out of the Shadows is a book I will most definitely be recommending to people.
