The Housemaid (The Housemaid #1) was a great read by Freida McFadden. Millie is welcomed to the family by Nina Winchester when she takes the job as their housemaid. She is an ex-con looking to start fresh. She cooks and cleans the house from top to bottom every day. She picks up their daughter from school and cooks delicious meals for the family before heading into her tiny room to eat alone. Nina seems to make a mess just to see Millie clean it. She makes up strange lies about her own daughter. Nina’s husband Andrew seems broken every day. Millie starts to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life, with the fancy house and car, and the perfect husband. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
I loved this! It had me gripped from the first chapter. It was an audiobook and the narrator was brilliant! The suspense was intense I could not turn it off!
This review is late due to illness so my apologies.
Thank you to #netgalley #Bookouture for the opportunity to review this Audible book!
I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.
Freida does it again! By the summary you think you know where the book is headed and its just another nanny/housekeeper stole the husband book. Not with Freida! You never where the story will end up! Although many comment that her writing is simple and juvenile, I apparently like that, if thats the case. I have read over half of her books and I've only disliked one. They are all fast paced easy to read, and filled with unexpected twists and turns. The Housemaid was no exception!
My heartfelt thanks to Freida McFadden, Bookouture, and Netgalley for providing me with an audio ARC for my honest review.
Andy Winchester, son of Evelyn and Robert Winchester, takes delight in punishing the women that fall short of his expectations by locking them in the attic and giving them unimaginable tasks or depriving them of food and water. It's all fun and games until the roles are reversed and he becomes the victim. The dead victim that is. Some will say that he deserves what he gets.
Andy marries Nina and becomes a "father" to her daughter, Cecelia. Nina's dreams of the perfect life and the perfect husband soon become the perfect nightmare. While Nina is the envy of many - meaning all of her friends are jealous of her perfect life, she is desperate to escape. She soon hires Millie, an ex convict, and comes up with a plan to escape. Millie, like Nina did at first, thinks she has struck gold and just can't believe her luck. With Nina out of the picture, she steps into the perfect life - or so she thinks - until she becomes Andy Winchester's next victim
That's when Andy becomes the victim and gets a taste of his own medicine. He ends up dead.
Thank you to Net Galley for an ARC - I just got around to writing this review. This was a good book; however, it was kind of dry in the middle and then it started to pick back up again. A must read though.
A well written and narrated thriller that had me wanting to know more. I did take a long pause for the content (TW: domestic abuse) but glad I resumed and keen to read the second one now I see there is another coming out in the series!
Thanks to the publishers for allowing me access to an eAlc via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Freida McFadden masterfully wrote a psychological thriller called The Housemaid. I consumed this book that artfully painted a picture of the perfect couple who had it all until the characters showed their true selves as the story unraveled. Right when I thought I knew what was going to happen, it jerked in another direction right down to the last chapters.
This novel had a shocking ending and left it open for the sequel. I have already have my radar on the next one called The Housemaid's Secret.
Starting out, I found myself thinking that this book was filled with vile characters, all greatly unlikeable. However, as I got further into the story, I started out understand why they were the way they were.
The twist in the middle was when the book really got going, and I loved the escalation in tension and excitement from that point on.
Definitely an interesting end to the book, and one I didn't quite see coming.
Tense and highly enjoyable!
The narrator was the perfect fit for this book, using differing tones for each of the characters, which just suited them so well.
Unfortunately this book was archived the day I was accepted on Netgalley - I did however, purchase the audiobook to although me too give a review.
This was my first time listening to anything by this author and I was not disappointed.
Millie is hired by a rich couple, Nina and Andrew, as a housemaid. Millie is recently out of prison and struggling to find work so she’s thrilled to finally get a good paying job and be accepted back into the community.
Nina is very sweet at the beginning however, as soon as Millie moves in, she sees a completely different side to Nina and is treated horribly.
Millie starts to feel bad for Andrew and finds herself fantasising what it would be like to live in Nina’s shoes. Andrew is handsome, a great father and treats Millie with respect.
This story is told in 3 parts and as soon as I got to part 2 … my jaw … DROPPED. I could not put this book down.
Everyone needs to read The Housemaid this year!
I listened to the audiobook version and really enjoyed the narrator. The Housemaid is one of those psychological thrillers that was creepy…. Yes I said creepy characters that put shivers up my spine the whole way through, I thought I had it worked out but not the reveal had my head spinning, I loved every twisted sick moment of this book. Frieda McFadden writes a twisty sick prose I could not put down.
Nina & Andrew Winchester have the perfect home Andrew has his dream job & they have a daughter Cecilia who goes to a private school, they both decide to hire a nanny to take care of their huge home & Cecilia, so Nina interviews Millie who has been living in her car& finding it hard to make ends meet she was fired from her job at a burger joint& thinks the nanny job would suit her down to the ground. She gets the job Nina welcomes her to the family she is delightful at first but Nina has a dark side that when you cross her things start to go to hell.
When Nina shows Millie her room up in the attic Millie senses an uneasiness about the room dread consumes her, from here on nothing is what it seems. The Winchesters are an influential family but Andrew thinks Millie is unfairly treated& tells Nina to cool it.
But what is real & what isn’t?
There are so many read herrings in this story the mind boggles all I can say this was so good & scary it made hairs in my neck quiver, this was my first read by Miss McFadden & wont be my last one thing I thought Cecilia was a spoilt little brat who got on my nerves big time but once I read the backstory it all made sense.
Millie gets hired by the Winchesters as their live in housemaid. Recently out of jail and living out of her car, this was one opportunity she couldn’t turn down for the salary they were going to pay her.
But looks…can be deceiving. She slowly starts to realize that Nina is well.. off her rocker. As a reader I got so angry at Nina for the way she acted and treated Millie.
This was truly one psychological thriller that will have you guessing until the very end. Although I did figure out one part of the storyline (after debating it so much), it still kept me wanting to know the entire story. I really enjoyed the way the book ended and the narrator was great!
Read this if:
💊 You want a fast paced psychological thriller
💊 Like reading books that you can totally see become a movie (they really should make a movie out of this one!)
This book was so fun 😅 twists and turns for sure. You think you know what is happening, who is in the wrong, and what comes next. But you’re probably wrong, I loved unraveling the family dynamic- definitely recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author and the publisher for a chance to listen to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. An unbelievable twisty read that kept me engrossed to the end! Reading the plot had me wanting to read this book and when I was approved I immediately started listening. The ending was spectacular and a total surprise to me.! I would recommend this book to everyone!
Wow 🤩 I loved this book. A great read that in Part 1 of the book had you thinking you knew where the storyline was heading… but in Part 2 it threw a MASSIVE curveball ! A highly original storyline loved it !!
The narrator was really easy to listen too and made the characters come to life highly recommend
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden starts in the best possible way for a Mystery/Thriller book! You find Wilhelmina "Millie" Calloway living in her car and in desperate need of a job, risking her parole status after being fired from her old job. She meets housewife Nina Winchester, who is looking for a live-in housekeeper and offering a handsome salary in return. Against Millie's expectation she gets the job, but soon after, Millie discovers that there's something strange with the people living in the Winchester House.
This book is truly aligned with its genre, there were so many little mysteries and when you thought you were on to the story, the author flipped the entire situation. So many twists and turns, and so many times I exclaimed out loud "WHAAT?", amazing. I listened to the audiobook, and it kept me glued to the phone, especially in the final part of the book. The narration was superb too, completely believable and carried me through the book perfectly. Can't wait to read/listen more of Freida McFadden!
After reading this, I was a little confused by the blurb "From behind closed doors, she see everything". I didn't feel as though this fit. Great read with a lot of fun twists, though!
I enjoyed this book and liked the split perspectives half way through. I enjoyed the characters but did find the ‘twist’ quite predictable.
The Housemaid was my very 1st book by Frieda McFadden and it surely won’t be my last! Why have I been sleeping on this author?! Why haven’t I heard others talking about this author?! What should I read next by this author?! So many questions.
Frieda has quickly proven what a talented writer she is. What a shocking, creepy, and twisty thriller. I was totally here for all of it!! Go in blind and enjoy the ride!!
Just know from the first chapter where a dead body is found to that ending. I couldn’t listen fast enough. The narration kept me fully engaged. And that ending though?!?! Wow!!! This story kept its pace and I enjoyed the dual POVs. The only downfall in the audiobook is I think having a 2nd narrator would have totally elevated this listening experience. But even still the one narrator did a superb job!
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for this ALC in exchange for my honest review. I highly recommend the audiobook.
Freida MacFadden has created something absolutely creepy and twisted with The Housemaid and it was A-MAZ-ING!! The narration was spot on, the story was full of thrills and surprises, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it! Highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley, Ms. MacFadden, and the publisher for an early audio copy of this book for my review.
There are many twists and turns in this thriller. Some readers may enjoy them. But I didn't. In order to enjoy good thrillers, characters and plots have to make sense. None of the characters in this book made sense. They change their personalities like magic in every turn. Are they all psychopath? I hate illogical thriller.
Millie Calloway is down on her luck and living in her car when she gets a job as a live-in housemaid. She can hardly believe her luck and thinks it will solve all of her problems, so she works hard to show she is up to this new challenge. She quite quickly realises the family dynamic is not as she originally thought, and as the story unravels you are kept guessing. I enjoyed the narration of this audio book. Thank you to the author, NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
