This is a collection of short stories. Some of the stories felt dull. Others felt rushed. I did enjoyed some of them. Overall an average collection

I requested this last year and then must admit that it dropped to the bottom of my list as other approvals were granted.

This was a big mistake!

I don't think I realised when requested that this was a series of short stories, which aren't generally my favourite genre. However, from the first page to the last in this book, I was gripped.

The stories are funny, dark, sometimes shocking. Some of the language and cultural ideas within are unfamiliar to me, but this made them more interesting. I loved that these were told from women's perspectives to tell stories that we wouldn't necessarily hear otherwise. The dry humour shone through and made the voices even stronger and the stories even more compelling. These were women who may be treated as a minority, but who absolutely do not view themselves in that way and who show their increadible personalites and strengths.

This made me laugh, smile, gasp. Definitely a must read.

Synopsis: ‘Nearly All the Men in Lagos are Mad’ is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos.

There’s a story of a young lady who tries to find her oyibo soulmate on the streets of Lagos; another of a pastor’s wife who defends her husband from an allegation of adultery; a wife takes a knife to her husband’s penis; a night of lust between a rising musician and his Instagram baddie takes an unexpected turn.

Review: This book is phenomenal. It gave me major “fuck the patriarchy” vibes, and was a great read if you’re in the mood to hate all men 😂. I’m honestly not sure how to describe it otherwise, but the writing was incredible and I was sucked into every single short story. Some serious formatting errors really did make it difficult to follow if one story had ended and another began, but I’m sure in a physical copy that might be different.

This is a set of short stories set in Lagos, I really enjoyed these stories, I wasn’t expecting quite so much sex, but it was well written, sensual and didn’t feel uncomfortable they way it can feel sometimes. I really loved Damilare Kuku’s writing style, each story felt unique and original , I loved her focus on the social and politics situations in Lagos, especially the Patriarchy , there’s also a lot of humour (even if a little emotional), A must read collection of stories and I’ll definitely be looking for more by Damilare Kuku

"Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad" by Damilare Kuku is a collection of short stories set in Lagos, Nigeria. Reading it was such an enjoyable experience, as the author has a talent of sensual writing, not only in terms of sex scenes (and there are plenty), but mainly in her ability to create a unique atmosphere for each story and not shying away from social and political commentaries that are woven into the scenes.

It doesn't matter in what part of the city the story is set, what's the character's background, age and gender, it all feels authentic. There's also a lot of humour in Kuku's writing, even when it's bittersweet, and the emotional landscape is well executed. The characters are believable, and so are their struggles and motivations.

Great read.

Funny, bittersweet, sad. A book-long collection of fuckery? This is a book about patriarchy and relationships in lots of different contexts. I loved that, although the women have experiences in common, the different stories flow and accumulate impact. Outstanding opening line that I keep sending to people.

I really enjoyed this book, it was an easy and entertaining read, without skimping on quality. I wasn't expecting there to be so many sex scenes, but at least they weren't cringe.

I could relate to many of the women in the book having encountered many of these archetypal men!
