What do you do when you're born into a criminal family but want to get out? You fake your death, of course - but what happens next?
I really enjoyed this twisty thriller with its strong female protagonist who knows how to fight but has been broken by her past. By the end I was totally invested and eager for a sequel!
This book had my attention from the first page. Escaping from your mob family is tough. Faking your own death to do it is another thing. That is exactly what Toni does to escape her family. She runs away to Mexico trying to live a new life when she is pulled in again to a life of secrets. The plot was fast paced but easy to keep up with. I enjoyed the book but not sure if I would read it again.
Toni is trying to escape from her mobster family and brothers so she tries to fake her death. She is living in Mexico and is trying to find a way to make a living under her new name. She meets someone who gives her some jobs and she has to prove herself.
This book was enjoyable and fast paced. I really got into it and the story.
I had more fun with this book than I expected to once the story began. We plunge right into the mess that our lead protagonist is trying to make of her life while at the same time correcting her trajectory. What happened next seemed too lucky for me to fully appreciate it. Even if I did not agree with how things came to be the way they did, I liked our spunky lead, her tragic backstory and the amount of effort she puts into doing a job well.
Toni is in a jam, and the only way out seems to be to end her life. This latter plan is solely on paper, freeing her from mob connections and giving her hope for a new life. Now, given her set of skills and lack of finances, it is only plausible that she ends up in less than squeaky clean situations. As mentioned in the very beginning, I found this new acquaintance and the suddenness of her role mildly offputting. The rest of what she has to do, the hoops she jumps through, and the work assigned to her were quite entertaining. They were even a little stressful at times. It is a good way to establish a new character and provide a background which provides enough fodder for future installments. I will not go into the details because it is the focal point, the building of the incidents and the actions taken by the extended cast around Toni.
It has some action, a lot of spy work and an interesting lead character who gives her heart to a kitten for added ambience in the very beginning. It does cover some dark and depressing background stories, but on the whole, it ended on a positive note.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is based on my own reading experience.
This is one of those books that are read in one go: an interesting heroine, complex situations, a lot of thrill and suspense and very entertaining.
I read this book in two days, couldn't put it down. I particularly enjoyed the well developed character of the main protagonist, the subtlety of her story and reading a thriller that didn't centre around a weary detective for once. Looking forward to the next in series.
Antonia Morretti belongs to a family of mobsters, not the high-ranking kind but her life hasn’t been easy since the day her brother Jimmy saved her and Nino. To get out, she fakes her death and changes her appearance all while moving to Mexico to escape her brothers’ clutches. Her antics does get her recruited by a suspicious guy Carl on the pretense of a university advertisement. Little does she knows; this job would require her to risk her life and be apart of an organization that solve corrupt cases.
Her tasks came in a variety of packages and tests; to prove herself and be trusted Carl took it upon himself to take on various cases that would make her ideal for the role he has in mind for her. However, during these events he reveals to her his plans on looking into her family. She does not hesitate to do what is necessary and live her life freely, even if it entails her facing Jimmy.
No Such Thing as Goodbye was a decent read, I expected a bit more suspense and drama. There weren’t much thrilling events. I was hoping for a little more interaction with Antonia and her family after her departure and a bit more development of Antonia’s character. Her character was enticing at the beginning, but I felt that it dwindled throughout the story-line.
The novel was catchy during the first few chapters but, there was not much captivating scenes. Although it was a fast-paced read, I would say No Such Thing as Goodbye was not much of a mystery and thrill as I was hoping for. I was disappointed during the final scenes; however, this may be the first of the series. I hope Antonia’s journey has more suspense and excitement with a bit of drama.
The few things I liked about this novel is one the lack of romance and two her passion for animals. I would say I do not have a favorite character, neither did I disliked any characters. I just thought that the story development was a bit disappointing hence I rate Karmen Špiljak novel 3 out of 5 stars. I may recommend this book but it will not be my first choice.
Toni is trying to escabe her mobster family, she fakes her own death. She learns that her brother is on his way to Mexico and fears for her life, Will she run again or will she risk her life for a chance to be free. I really liked this book very suspensful and engaging. Which route will she take? What will happen to her if she makes the wrong chocie ? What will happen to her if she makes the right choice? You will have to read to find out :) .
Thanks to Independent Book Publishers Association, Netgalley, and the author in exchange for a review.
Publishing Date: July 1st 2022.
This was a fast paced thriller that didn’t disappoint. The main characters backstory was intriguing and her training and skills proved to be useful throughout the book as well as I imagine in the future as this is only the first in a series of detective stories. I look forward to continuing with these books and reading other works from this author!
I enjoyed this first voyage of Toni Morretti quite a bit. From the first paragraph I was sucked into the story and it just kept on moving at a nice clip. I think this book kind of has everything that a mystery/suspense novel should have: a dark and gritty backstory for the main character, a loveable cat, a quirky mysterious mentor, lots of disguises and tension filled scenarios . . . you get my point.
While not as outwardly funny as Evanovich's books, I definitely got the same sort of vibe from this book. It didn't quite have the comedy or romance tension, but it was like it took the more serious elements of Evanovich's storylines and actually turned them into something a bit more literary. I think I'll be checking out more of the series as it comes out. My interest is definitely piqued and I am excited to see where Toni goes.
I was really enjoying this book till the near the end. There seemed to be no proper explanations to the final ending. It just seemed to happen. What a shame, left me feeling like I had wasted my time. Thanks for the opportunity to read this book, sorry I found it disappointing.
