Picking up a Cara Hunter book is like putting on your favourite cosy jumper. You know it's not going to let you down - although it probably won't quite give you the same warm fuzzy feelings what with the police investigations and death... but it's a good comparison I reckon.
I continue to enjoy this series and have never felt that it has got stale or repetitive - I always am excited to dive into what mystery Fawley is undertaking and it'll be interesting to see where the series continues to go! I for one can't wait.
This was a very complicated , police procedural story. the Adam Foleys' Team have many inspirational moments when trying to solve this puzzle. The story was based on a complicated history of possible murder and its resolution was totally absorbing.
This is the sixth book in the DI Adam Fawley series by author Cara Hunter.
When the police are called out in the middle of the night to an isolated farm outside Oxford, it appears to be a burglary that went wrong. They discover a dead body, shot at point blank range in the kitchen. But DC Adam Fawley suspects that everything is not as it first seems. Shortly after the police discover a link to a past case of a child’s murder and an alleged miscarriage of justice.
Author Cara Hunter does write fast paced thrillers that never fail to completely grip me from start to finish. I really enjoy the characters and the intriguing plots and can’t wait for the next one in the series.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Penguin UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I have read a number of the DI Fawley series. Whilst enjoyable I didn't find this one as good as previous ones. However still excellent.
Hope to Die is the sixth title in the entertaining series by Cara Hunter. Set in Oxford, the series protoganist in one DI Adam Fawley who leads a team that specialise in solving high profile crimes. The team have previously solved murders, kidnappings and now turn their attention to a murder in a farmhouse.
Fawley and the team are instantly suspicious of the story provided by the couple to explain why they murdered the young man in their kitchen. And then the team undiscover his identity .....
A twenty year old case is suddenly thrown back into the spotlight and every action is under the scrutiny of the media and politicians.
Hunter had included her trademark elements such as comments from social media, interview transcripts, reports etc. And this adds an extra element to the storyline, showing the reader that the case is perceived in the wider community and also where the ideas of the team are being directed.
Hunter has a knack for developing a twist and it's impossible for me to tell where the storyline is going. Each story is completely different but equally entertaining and I always look forward with excitement to her latest novel.
DI Adam Fawley and his team at Thames Valley Police are back and once again, Cara gives the reader another five star knockout read.
If you haven't read any other books by Cara Hunter, why not? You are missing out on some cracking books.
This can easily be read as a standalone. Reading the previous books would give you more of an insight into what has happened previously in Adam's life but at the start of this book there is a brief outline of all the characters as a reminder. This is great, even for someone who has read them all as it just gets the reader right back in to the lives of the characters.
Two police officers are called to a remote farmhouse where there is a gruesome dead body! The two elderly owners say he was a burglar and he was shot in self defence, but something doesn't add up.
It soon becomes clear that this is linked to a case from several years ago.
I love the way Cara writes. Truly one of the best authors for writing police procedual novels. This is not only written in chapters from the point of view of the main characters, but also transcripts of police interviews, Twitter feeds, texts, newspaper clippings and a Netflix show. This is such a great addition. So much detail has gone into this book and it is very clear Cara has an excellent understanding of police procedure.
I really can't praise this enough and I can't wait for book number seven!
Many thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and the author for an ARC. One of the easiest five star reads this year.

It is the sixth book in the series of DI Adam Fawley. Cara Hunter’s Fawley is flawed and yet his detective senses are impeccable. The sixth book in the series can be read on its own. But it is recommended to read from the start as each of the stories is intriguing and all the characters grow at a gradual pace.
Fawley and the recurring characters have moved on from the last book. Fawley admires being a father again, as his daughter is three months old. He is also happy that his wife, Alex, is in a better place and she’s coming back to what she used to before tragedy struck the Fawley family a few years back.
Two elderly people are involved in a complicated case and that troubles the team. They gradually and with the right pace uncovered the case. Every step the team takes becomes a huge turn. This is one of the best things about Hunter’s writing. It’s methodical and takes a flow.
The death of this unidentified person has raised more questions than answers. The book presented these questions in a different format and it engages with the reader, making them equally involved in the story.
The intriguing element of the story keeps the reader guessing. This book is one level up from its earlier ones. Alongside its brilliant format for:
Voicemails
DNA reports
Web series (Netflix)
Created psychological analysis of one character (using proper medical terms)
As with all books of Cara Hunter, this book, too, has a central theme that applies to our society and times. The main theme of the book varies, but abuse and biased judgment are at the core.
As mentioned before, this book can be read as a standalone and once you start, it will be really difficult to put it down.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin for the copy of the ARC.
I’m hooked!! Another utterly amazing story in the series, unputdownable…a word often used for a good story, however it’s a perfect description for this book!
I’ve not read all the books in the series and no need to as it works as a stand alone. The inclusion of a synopsis of who’s who at the start of the book helps you understand the characters, I do wish more authors were as thoughtful as this !
Can’t recommend the book enough and am off to buy all her other books!
Thank you to Netgalley the author and the publishers for an ARC in return for an honest review
A simple review - Hope to Die was absolutely brilliant. Great storyline. Great twists. Great pacing. Great characters. Looking forward to the next in the series already
Adam Fawley is fast becoming my go to detective series.
In “Hope to Die” Cara Hunter is at the top of her game.
I love the way the story unfolds and how it focuses more on police procedure rather than Adam Fawley personally. There are some lovely touches in the camaraderie between the officers.
As always, we also have the Facebook notifications which adds a touch of humour and realism.
From beginning to end this book was a dream of a read.
Another gripping police procedural, this is book 6 in a very popular series and for those who enjoy a well written crime drama, it’s the series for you. The author is excellent at peppering the narrative with ingenious additions such as social media extracts and in this book, a Netflix series! This really maintained my interest and helps the books flow.
It’s a murder mystery with a difference and there are twists and turns as DI Adam Fawley and his team work to crack the case. The team are detailed at the beginning of the book, which is useful if this is your first read, or, you are like me and easily confused!
Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Rating: 4.5/5
This is the sixth book in the DI Adam Fawley series, but only the second one that I have read personally. For any prospective readers who may find themselves in a similar situation, I am pleased to tell you that you can simply pick this series up at this point without it having any adverse effect on your enjoyment. As she did with the previous novel, Cara Hunter provides a little background précis of the central characters at the start of the book, which shows wonderful practical consideration for her audience. It not only serves as a handy reminder for anyone already familiar with the series, but it means that any new readers can happily pick up "Hope to Die" and enjoy it as a standalone without being disadvantaged.
I am so impressed by Cara Hunter - I have yet to come across another author who can write police procedurals as effectively and enjoyably as she manages to do. I am frequently annoyed by books from this genre. The format is so often hackneyed with stereotypical characters and plots that are ridiculously far-fetched, scripted in yawningly melodramatic fashion. None of these criticisms apply here.
I won't rehash the plot in this review. There is adequate information in the official synopsis to get you started, so you don't need any potential spoilers from me to detract from the pleasure of uncovering the story for yourself. Suffice to say that, on this occasion, Cara Hunter has taken inspiration from a real-life crime for this fictional story and that element of true-crime realism combined with the author's creative writing skills works extremely well.
The characters are all well-drawn and credible. The plot is believable, compelling and has been carefully and tightly constructed. The pace of the novel is excellent ... The balance between character background and plot development is spot on. There are sections that are somewhat more considered, but only when it is appropriate for them to be so - and there are other times when events unfurl rapidly as the investigation builds up a head of steam.
Cara Hunter also makes great use of some literary / publishing mechanics that really embellish and enhance the overall impact of the book. In contrast to most types of fiction, I feel that police procedurals often work better as televisual dramatisations rather than on the printed page. Cara Hunter has found a way to present her work in a way that comes close to offering the best of both worlds. I have no doubt that this series would translate extremely well onto the small screen, but even in book form it offers a enjoyably immersive experience to the reader.
I don't give out many 5-star ratings for book reviews, but "Hope to Die" fully deserves that top mark. If you are a fan of police procedurals, or of crime fiction in general ... or even just someone who enjoys good, well-written fiction of any genre, then you really should put this on your reading list.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review.
I just love this series from the brilliant Cara Hunter. DI Adam Fawley once again has a difficult case to crack. A man is shot dead in the kitchen of a remote house owned by an elderly couple. A simple case of protecting your home when confronted by a burglar? Nothing is ever that simple for Fawley and his loyal team. As the case develops, secrets from twenty years previously are brought to the fore and a complex weave of lies begins to materialise. Finding themselves facing obstacles in every direction and with new revelations making solving this crime increasingly difficult. Their methodical and committed approach eventually pays dividends. In some ways a heartbreaking story that also has you questioning how heartless some people can be. A great read with brilliant characters. The whole team of detectives are completely different but focused on their job. If this is the first Adam Fawley book you will read then it is no problem as it stands alone well and also Cara Hunter has made notes on each regular character at the beginning of the book. However, you have missed a great series so suggest you catch up on the others, you won’t regret it.
Hope to Die is the 6th in the DI Adam Fawley series but it is a good standalone .This series just gets better and better .Adam has his usual team with him with the addition of 3 new people .A call late at night of a gunshot heard sends the Team to an isolated house and two elderly owners and a dead body ! This is a brilliant thriller,a Police procedural with many twists ,unexpected turns and sometimes very dark .Absolutely loved it can't wait for the next book in the series .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC.
This is the sixth in the Adam Fawley detective series and it’s a cracker.
An elderly couple shoot an intruder in their country home. It all looks straightforward, but is anything but.
A historic case of infanticide is reopened and the conviction of the mother is called into question.
This is a great series but this reads equally well as a standalone novel.
It’s really pacy and although there a lot of characters, especially police officers, it’s a gripping read.
Highly recommended if you’re a fan of detective novels along the lines of Peter Robinson’s DCI Banks novels.
Wow! Book six in Cara Hunter’s DI Adam Fawley series.
This is a fabulous read, a page turner, lots of twists, plots within plots, to keep the reader hooked. The Fawley team with some new additions work round the clock. A brilliant plot. Definitely my favourite detective series at the moment. Very clever the way the emails, newspaper clippings, voicemails etc are used. A gripping read. I highly recommend this entire series.
Thanks to Net Galley and Penguin General UK for an ARC of this book book in exchange for a review.
Thanks to Cara and NetGalley for allowing me to read Hope to Die, the 6th in the DI Fawley series. The addition of the list of Fawley's team members at the start of the book is really helpful, both for readers of previous books in the series and for new readers.
Sgt Barnetson and PC Puttergill respond to a 999 call regarding gun fire at a remote property, Gantry Manor.
There is a delay by the householder, Richard Swann, in opening the door. He leads the officers into the kitchen where they are faced with the body of a man who has been killed with a shotgun.
Supercilious Swann and his wife claim that they heard an intruder and when Richard went downstairs to investigate, he was attacked by the man who he shot in self defence.
DS Quinn and DC Hansen are called to the manor where it soon becomes clear that they are not being told the whole truth.
The dead man had nothing to identify him, making extra work for the team.
For various reasons, Fawley's team has 3 new members, each bringing new skills to the table.
With the return of Quinn, there are now 2 DS on the team and Fawley has to find a way to ensure that they play nice, not a term that Quinn is familiar with.
Will Fawley and the team be able to identify the dead man and get to the bottom of why he was at the remote manor?
There are loads of secrets, lies, twists and turns in the book.
An increidble read that was full of action, twists and unpredictability. It kept me guessing right up until the end and left me on the edge of my seat.
Another in the series to feature DC Adam Fawley and what a belter. It looks like a simple burglary gone wrong but Fawley smells a rat. While delving into the background of the couple who were burglarized he finds the couple was connected to a high profile case a few years ago. Full of read herrings and more twisty than a corkscrew. Nothing is what it seems in this book and a real workout for the grey matter. I enjoyed whittling the suspects down and I still got it wrong. Very clever storytelling and a thoroughly entertaining read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
