I would like to thank Netgalley and Penguin General UK for an advance copy of Hope to Die, the sixth novel to feature DI Adam Fawley of Thames Valley Police.
The police are called to a remote Oxfordshire farmhouse when a passerby hears a gunshot. There they find an elderly couple and a dead body that they claim was a burglar they shot in self defence. Fawley isn’t so sure and when he and his team find a link to an old case of child murder and a possible miscarriage of justice they know they will be in the spotlight.
I enjoyed Hope to Die so much that I read it in one sitting, unable to put it down. For personal reasons this is currently very unlike me so it’s a full 5* from me.
I found the plot fascinating with its twists and turns and I genuinely had no idea where it would go next. Even more fascinating is that the basic premise of one of the main characters is based in reality when I was swithering about how realistic the scenario was, just to prove that truth is stranger than fiction.
The plot is the usual mixture real time investigation interspersed with Farley’s first person take on events, press cuttings, social media commentary and old transcripts and reports from the previous investigation. I like this approach as it gives a wider perspective on events and mixes up the narrative. The content of the plot is even better. I don’t want to issue spoilers but in certain respects it’s heartbreaking, but on the other it’s chilling. Camilla Rowan who is at the heart of it is a manipulative psychopath and a comfortable and habitual liar. I was hooked on Fawley and the team gradually dismantling her story and rebuilding something closer to the truth. It’s absorbing and compulsive.
Hope to Die is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
I've read previous books in this series and enjoyed them and looked forward to reading this one. The story starts of with a killing that looks like a burglary gone wrong but it's not quite that straight forward as D I Adam Fawley and his team soon discover. If you have enjoyed the previous books in this series you'll enjoy this one. If you've not read any of the previous books give it a go anyway. You won't be disappointed. A great read.
Wow! A deeply disturbing story with many twists and turns. I could not put it down and read deep into the night to finish it. Highly recommended!
I love Cara Hunters novels, so I'm always excited one a new one comes out. DI Adam Fawley and his team are back and investigating the death of a burgler at a remote location which is owned by an elderly couple, what should be a simple case of a home invasion gone wrong soon turns out to be nothing that simple.
Full of twists and turns and and a surprising end its another great installment
Hope to Die by cara Hunter is such a great book, I really enjoyed reading it. I was gripped from the very start and I highly recommend this book
Great characters, great plot totally intriguing left you wondering. Not entirely sure the end was right though. Would that have really happened to Cam. Can be read as a stand alone book although it is part of a series. Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy
Cara Hunter has done it again with another excellent book in the Adam Fawley series. Hope to Die is one of the best yet.
I found the plot of a missing child and its links to a supposed burglar killed by the owner's shotgun, fascinating. The intricate plotting and bring together of unravelled threads is excellent.
Cara Hunter has a talent for depicting people. I love the familiarity of picking up with the police team with these individual personalities. She also creates brilliantly fiendish villains.
Having originally come from Oxfordshire, I love the settings and their familiarity. Like Morse, this series is a love letter to Oxford.
More twists and turns than a rollercoaster. Don't miss out on this one.
Ah, this was fantastic! Back on par with books 1-4!
I almost didn’t request this as I had been so disappointed with book five last year. However, I decided to take the chance and request this, and I made the decision to re-read all of books 1-5. This did enable me to enjoy book five a little more the second time around and ensured that I went into this newest instalment ready to give the author a second chance.
I am so glad I did; I read this so fast as I was utterly gripped. We are in a brand new investigation, and Fawley’s troubles are in the past.
We have new members of the team, which made for a bit of diversity in the investigative team. It stopped the story from getting stale, covering the same members. We have fresh blood and with them new secrets, personalities and stories to tell.
The investigation itself was fantastic. I really didn’t know how it would end up; what lies were the truth and what truths were lies? Very well executed and I was hooked all the way through.
Cara Hunter was back on form with this book, and I’m hoping book five was just a blip due to lockdowns and the world being a very strange place to work in. There was just brilliance in the latest book, and all of her cleverness was back on top form. Thank you so much for restoring my faith, and I already can’t wait for book seven!!
A solid, well-deserved, five-star read!
I would like to thank Penguin General UK and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Hope To Die’ by Cara Hunter in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
It’s the middle of the night when a call is made to the police to report a disturbance at Gantry Manor, the home of elderly Richard and Margaret Swann. When DI Adam Fawley’s team arrive they find the body of a man lying in the kitchen and Richard saying he shot a burglar in self-defence. But DI Fawley soon realises that this could be connected to a high profile case that happened twenty years ago for which a woman has been in prison for killing her new-born son.
Any thriller written by Cara Hunter is going to be an absolute pleasure to read and ‘Hope To Die’ is no exception. It’s a police procedural thriller that has a complex and highly ingenious plot and interspersed with the chapters are detailed interviews that give it a feel of being much more of a genuine police investigation than fictional. There’s so much suspense, intrigue and twists and turns that I’ve been reading non-stop, unable to put it down until I’d reached the final chapter. It’s been good to meet up again with Adam Fawley and his loyal and incredibly hardworking team, especially Quinn, Gis, Ev and Sargent, as they delve into the case of the notorious Camilla Rowan and her missing baby. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading this exceptional thriller and while I wanted to know the truth of what happened I really didn’t want it to end.
Absolutely could not put this down. The characters have developed nicely across the series and the plot here was great - really interesting, unusual and the pace pulled you along. I really must go back and see if I've missed any of the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance read of this book. I've read all the Adam Fawley series so far and I have loved each one. I like the range of media used throughout the book and found it fast paced and enjoyable. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Book six in the DI Fawley series.
A young mother in prison for murdering her new born.
Camilla Rowan is serving seventeen years for the murder of her son. She says she is innocent and handed him to his father.
Late one evening a young man is shot dead at a remote house. The occupants said he was a burglar and were defending themselves.
This is a tricky and complex case for Fawley and his team.
I love the way Hunter weaves the story together. We are taken down one route to find a dead end and then another turns up.
So cleverly written.
There are a couple of new team members, I particularly liked Chloe, she was very unassuming unlike Carter who was trying to score points all the time.
I don't know how I am going to wait a whole year for the next case.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Penguin General UK and Cara Hunter for my ARC of Hope to Die in return for my honest review.
Cara hunter is one of my favourite authors so I was delighted to receive the ARC. What a brilliant read, again, from this author. I am well invested in DI Fawley and his team as I have read all of the novels. It could easily be read as a standalone.
Police are called to a local farmhouse where there has been a fatal shooting where it appears an elderly couple have disturbed a burglar.
It transpires the elderly couple are not who they appear to be having changed their name by deed poll some years prior to the event. This relates to a high-profile case where somebody has been sentenced to seventeen years.
This is where the twists start and they do keep coming.
Brilliant read and highly recommended.
Hope to Die by Cara Hunter was such a welcome relief! The first book for a while that warrants 5 stars! Great characters that I engaged with and invested in. A fast paced, twisty plot that had me guessing and double guessing. Lies, intrigue, science and detection in spades. Read in one sitting which says it all. A resounding five stars. Next please
I absolutely love the Adam Fawley series and this is one of my favourites. After a shooting at an isolated farmhouse Fawley and his team investigate the links to the imprisonment 13 years ago of a woman for the murder of her baby.
A great addition to one of the best series of police procedurals around. I love the character of Adam Fawley and although I would suggest reading the series from the beginning to get Fawley's back story this works equally well as a standalone. The twists and turns of the plot really kept me gripped and completely immersed in this novel. My only complaint is the growing number of members of Fawley's team and at times I did lose track of who was who. However this did not detract from the quality of the writing and plotting and I'd highly recommend this novel.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
This is #6 in the DI Adam Fawley series and I can honestly say it's my my favourite series out there. I love the dynamics of the whole team and they are all interesting characters, even the ones like Quinn who isn't really the most likeable. There were quite a lot of new characters this time and it took a bit of getting used to who they all were and trying to remember. But I like them, especially Chloe Sargent, perhaps not Carter, who is a wannabe Quinn.
So it starts with a call out to a remote farmhouse and a fatal shooting, an elderly couple confronted a burglar and it all kicks off. But it's clear that it's not as simple as that and they are hiding things, especially the old woman Peggy. A major secret that will inevitably come out and the police discover that these people aren't who they say they are.
Camilla Rowan is serving life in prison for the murder of her newborn son, she has always denied it and his body has never been found. I did feel kinda sorry for her in the beginning as it's clear she didn't kill him, but what is she hiding and what could be bigger than serving 20 years in prison for something you didn't do!
It's a fantastic plot, full of twists and turns and it just felt like I was watching a series on tv as I read it. There is such depth to the story and mystery surrounding it, that you really have no idea what could have happened all those years ago.
I love this book and this series and I highly recommend it to all. I eagerly await the next in the series and give a massive thank you to NetGalley and Penguin General Uk for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Another fabulous read from Cara Hunter.
The different police characters are all really believable with the right amount of information about them.
The story although horrific in places kept me guessing what was going on and a really good ending!
A book to be read in a couple of sittings.
My thanks to the publisher and netgalley for an early copy in return for my honest review.
A really good five star rating.
It looks like a burglary gone wrong, but DI Adam Fawley suspects there's something more to it.
When the police discover a connection to a high profile case from years ago, involving a child's murder and an alleged miscarriage of justice, the press go wild.
Suddenly Fawley's team are under more scrutiny than ever before. And when you dig up the past, you're sure to find a few skeletons...
This is the 6th book in the DI Adam Fawley series
Totally recommend a really gripping read I couldn’t put it down
Thank You NetGalley and Penguin General Uk - Fig Tree, Hamish Hamilton, Viking, Penguin Life, Penguin Business
I just reviewed Hope to Die by Cara Hunter. #HopetoDie #NetGalley
I've read a few Cara Hunter books and really enjoyed them, and although this is part of a series it still works as a stand alone read. It was a good story, maybe not my favourite but it kept me interested throughout with plenty of twists
DI Adam Fawley is called out to a murder in an isolated farmhouse. The victim has been shot at point blank range.
Was it a case of self defence or is there more?
DI Fawley finds there is a link to an old case - where someone is still in prison for the crime committed.
Can he solve the new case but does the old one need solving as well?
