The Homewreckers was a great read by Mary Kay Andrews. Hattie Kavanaugh cleans up restored homes for Kavanaugh & Sons Restorations at 18 years old. She married the boss’s son at 20 years old and was a widow at 25. She is determined to continue the business and starts flipping houses. Unfortunately she gets a disaster of a house and loses money. Hattie gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to star in a beach house renovation reality show called The Homewreckers. I absolutely loved reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
The Homewreckers follows Hattie Kavanaugh as she navigates life after the death of her husband. Hattie still works for her father in law as a general contractor. When a TV producer spots her, he has the idea for a reality show about flipping historic homes. At first, Hattie is not on board at all. Yet she is swayed to participate after an investment property goes very bad and she finds herself so short on money, she must bring her beloved wedding ring to a pawn shop. As Hattie begins filming, she finds the house she is renovating is riddled with problems. Is someone intentionally trying to sabotage her? They find the wallet of a dead woman, a fire is set, and many more problems occur.
This book was a perfect easy, summer beach read. The characters were interesting and it definitely held my attention. Although it was a bit predictable and somewhat cheesy at times, I’d highly recommend this novel! Mary Kay Andrews did not disappoint!

The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews
Hattie Kavanaugh at 18 worked for her boyfriend's family business cleaning up restored homes. When she was 20 she walked down the isle with Hank Kavanuagh. At 25 she loses Hank and now Hattie Kavanaugh is a widower.
Hattie takes the life insurance money she received from Hanks death and uses that to purchase a small house that she redid and flipped it. Then she purchases a new property and meets a producer Mo who wants her to be part of a reality show called Homewreckers.
She participates in the reality show and through that incidents begins to happen to make progress on the house she is renovating more complex. They fall behind schedule and need to have it done by a certain time.
The story did not have much of a romance to it but more about the home remodeling reality show. It was not a bad story just wanted a little more romance to it. I did enjoy the little bit of mystery to who was doing the incidents that stalled the progress of the remodel.
The complexity of the remodel and finding some missing stuff from a women who went missing and reconnecting with love after loss. It all came together in a great read.
Thanks to Netgalley and MacMillan audio for a free audio version of this book for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley for the audio version of this book. I adore this book! The name and the opening scene threw me off at first. Then I got into it and it was an amazing read!! There is a lot of twists and turns but well worth it!! It is a mystery- a love story- and good wholesome reading all in one!
Hattie joined Kavanaugh & Son at the age of 18. She originally cleaned restored homes for the company. Within only seven years, she married the bosses son, becoming Hattie Kavanaugh, and was widowed when her husband, Hank, was killed in a motorcycle accident. She continues working for the company but also uses her own money to buy and flip homes in gentrifying neighborhoods. When one of her company flips loses a lot of money she looks for something to make back the money. What she finds is a reality TV producer looking for a new show in the house flipping/reno area. Harriet agrees with his proposal, purchases a rundown beachhouse at auction and proceeds to do the reno following all sorts of guidelines. All costs are hers, but she gets material from sponsors and is paid for her part in the program. What she wasn't ready for was the house designer the network hired, who they want to be a love interest, but all he does is aggravate her. The story also has a mystery to it, when they find the wallet of a local teacher who has been missing for many years. There is a lot going on in this story, with someone trying to sabotage the reno, the possibility that there is a connection between the missing teacher and the house and some simmering feelings just under the surface.
I really like the mashup of genres in this story. It is a bit women's fiction, a mystery, the home reno theme and a bit of romance. I really liked Hattie's character. Although it has been seven years since she lost her husband, she still loves him and his family. She feels terrible about the reno going way over budget and is willing to do whatever it takes to make it right, including borrowing money from her dad who has a shady past. She is also smart and knows what she is doing and is not about to let Trey sabotage her job. The mystery was quite interesting as well, with Hattie trying to solve it as she is sure the vandalism has something to do with the murder. Moe is the producer of the show and not only does he want the show to succeed, he wants to keep Hattie safe as he has begun to develop feelings for her. This was a great story with all it's various plotlines coming together well in the end. Another great story by Mary Kay Andrews that I definitely recommend. Kathleen McInerney is quickly becoming one of my favourite narrators. She has such a great voice with expression that adds emotion to each story. She gives the characters their own voices and made this story even more enjoyable for me. If you enjoy audiobooks, I definitely recommend you listen to this one.
This was a cute sorry but I liked her release last summer (2021) better. This was a mix of romance and a bit of mystery but with so many plot lines it was too short to fit it all in.
I thought the romance was completely lacking. I was honestly surprised at Mo’s grand gesture at the end of the book. And the mystery plot line of the missing woman seemed a bit too easily solved.
It was an easy beach read and well written. I just don’t think it’s one of this authors best books.
I enjoyed this story about a young widowed home flipper by Mary Kay Andrews. Our MC, Hattie Kavanaugh, is a strong, smart, and independent woman. She works for her father-in-law's renovation company and decides to participate in a house flipping TV show in order to make up for a business decision she made that lost her and the company a lot of money.
The story includes snippets from the filming of the tv show and a lot of discussion about the home renovations. If you are a fan of those types of TV shows, this book may be just the one for you.
For me, the storyline was good, if expected, but the romance was underdeveloped. Our two main characters hardly show any interest in each other for the majority of the story, so there wasn't much investment in their relationship.
Overall, another decent story by MKA. It was enjoyable, didn't take much brain power, and was a nice break from some deeper and heavier reads.
I listened to the audio of this one. It felt a little long, coming in at 14 hours and 30 minutes, but the narrator, Kathleen McInerney, fit the part very well and did a wonderful job.
I love Mary Kay Andrews books because they're heartwarming, entertaining, and hilarious. The Homewreckers was no exception. I loved the characters in this and found them all a bit relatable in different ways. Her characters always give me that warm, small town feel and it reminds me of home. I thought this one had a believable, organic romantic storyline despite the sometimes unrealistic nature of being on a reality show. I laughed a lot listening to this and really enjoyed the audio narration. The narrator did a great job of voicing each characters POV.
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews and narrated by Kathleen McInerney is a romantic mystery with an interesting cast of characters and a plot that will keep you engaged until the very end. Hattie Kavanaugh learned all aspects of restoring old houses from the bottom up and continued to work with her father-in-law after she was widowed. When she loses big on a house flip and signs up to be on a beach house renovation reality show to redeem herself, she may have taken on more than she and her crew can handle. Then there are the complicating personal relationships that come with the new gig. Will her self-absorbed costar be her new love interest? Where does the annoying producer fit into the picture then? Add in a local missing person cold case that escalates into a murder investigation and you have all the elements for a riveting read.
Although I agree with several other reviewers who noted that the beginning was rather slow, a lot of background essential to the storyline was provided in those first chapters. Hattie, her friend Cass, and her father-in-law Tug were engaging and so very likeable from the onset. Mo Lopez, the producer, grew on me as the story evolved and eventually became a favorite. Trae, the self-absorbed costar, was always the character that I didn’t trust and could never quite like. The supporting characters were interesting and three dimensional.
The house and the Tybee Island setting were as essential to the story as the characters and in a manner became characters. The sense of place was so strong I could almost smell the salt water and feel the wind whipping around the house.
I moved seamlessly between the written and audio versions of the book and thought the narrator was fabulous. Her sweet southern drawl was spot-on, creating a depth of personality that really added to my enjoyment of the story. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.) All in all I Ioved this book and hope that there are more to come!
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews.
Hattie Kavanaugh is a sweet, hard-working woman who lost her husband in a motorcycle accident. She works renovating homes and decided to spend the life insurance money on homes she could renovate and sell later. But the last house she purchased ended up being a disaster.
Just when she thought she’d lost it all, she’s offered a spot on a new beach house renovation reality show and even though she doesn’t love the idea, she takes it. When they start renovating the house, they find a wallet that belonged to a woman that had disappeared years ago.
The Homewreckers is an intricate story, part romance, part whodunnit. Both the romantic parts and the mystery aspects kept me invested throughout the story. Both storylines were very well developed and neatly wrapped up at the end.
This is my first Mary Kay Andrews book and I really enjoyed it! I’m looking forward to reading more books by her.
The audio is over 14 hours and it’s narrated by Kathleen McInerney who did a great job with Hattie and the rest of the characters. Thank you @macmillan.audio and @netgalley for the advanced audio copy of this wonderful book.
Review - Thank you NetGalley and Mary Kay Andrews
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you like remodeling show with a little bit of romance, and a whole lot of mystery this book is for you!
From the very beginning I loved the home town feel with the relationships with the town and the history that is built through the story.
A small town girl is pulled into the tv series life style and she is not sure how she feels about it but she has a passion for renovation of the historical houses in her town. But something is very different about this house! Relationships, mystery, murder, and more!
I was so excited when I received my audio copy of The Homewreckers, by Mary Kay Andrews., from Netgalley. & MacMillan There is nothing better than starting the summer with a Mary Kay Andrews book. Hattie Kavanaugh, works with her in laws construction business. She started work with them at 18, married their son at 20 and at 25 she was a widow. She literally has thrown her entire being into working for the company. She had one good friend and no real life if her own. That is until a Hollywood producer comes to town and mentions a possible tv show about flipping houses. She is intrigued with the idea but isn’t really convinced it is in her wheelhouse. But a few bad deals and some debt makes Hattie rethink the offer. Maybe it would be worth the trouble, to catch up on bills. Savannah Ga wasn’t prepared for what was to come with this Reno. A house had to be purchased, remodeled and flipped in a very short time. It seemed like almost an impossible timeframe. Hattie plugs away but at every turn there is a glitch and she doesn’t know how much she has left to give to this project. Can she get the project done? Can she figure out if it’s bad luck or someone purposely trying to set her back? Can Hattie get out of debt and make good on her loans? If you love a good story, that is well written, this boon is for you. I love the descriptions of Tybee Island and Savannah Island. My favorite part of an Andrews read, is you can get lost, for awhile, with a beach read and good vibes. Kathleen McInerney does an excellent job narrating. This was a 4 star read for me. It is always a pleasure to read and review Mary K Andrews. I hope you enjoy it too.
Great narration! And a surprising story. Only my second MKA book, is I guess I was very surprised when this romance turned into a whodunit mystery. At first I wasn’t sure if I liked that. I was really in on the home improvement reality show storyline. And I felt a little whiplashed to spin around a fourth of the way through the book and it become a murder mystery. But in the end, I think that added just the right depth to the story. Also because I wasn’t really in to the romance. Hattie, I loved. But Trey and Mo were pretty equal to me. And not in a good way. No was just kinda bland. I didn’t catch any chemistry between him and Hattie. But then again that could be from the narration. Even though she did a great job, sometimes romantic chemistry is lost on me when it’s only woman’s voice (or only a male’s voice in different cases). I really just wanted Hattie to do well. But I was quite satisfied with the wrap up. I’d recommend this one for sure.
Home reno tv + cold case + small town drama with a dash of romance = a perfect summer read.
This book was so enjoyable. I loved the main character and all the supporting cast.
This book has a family run house reno business coming up against a bad deal. The only way to salvage the business is to enter into a reality TV series about fixing up old houses in Savannah.
Hattie Kavanagh doesn't like the idea of being in the spot light, but to save the business and an old beach house she's willing to give it a go. After all what's the worst that could happen?
The short answer is a lot. Tons of problems actually. It makes for a stressful renovation, good reality TV and a tense environment in the sleepy beach town.
This was a fun and feel-good story! Romance, friendships, reality TV, and a murder... What more could you ask for? The characters were fun and in instantly felt connected to them. Loved it!!!
Thank you to NetGalley, the Publisher, and the Author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Hattie Kavanaugh has carved out a good life since her husband was killed in a motorcycle accident. She works with her best friend at her father-in-law's construction company to flip houses. Life has become pretty uneventful...until reality show producer Mo Lopez drops in on her.
I really enjoyed this audiobook (Thanks, NetGalley). This book has everything I enjoy - a little romance, a good deal of humor, and a dead body. The narrator is perfect.. I do have an issue about how one (huge) part of the story is treated, but I don't want to spoil this for other readers. All in all, an enjoyable book. And I would watch Homewreckers on TV.
MKA hits it out of the park with this book! I loved everything about this book. Throw in a little love story, murder mystery and the south and you have a win with me. I can not wait until her next book.
One of the best yet , though I tend to love all this authors reads .This one has my favs, suspense, humor,a project, fun characters. Always start off my summer with a Mary Kay Andrews book!
4.5 Stars!
Mary Kay Andrews delivers yet another enjoyable summer read that has it all - a gorgeous southern setting, relatable characters, a hint of romance and a twisty mystery.
After suffering a heartbreaking loss, Hattie Kavanaugh is putting everything she has into the job of her dreams. She has been granted the opportunity to film a TV show named The Homewreckers near her hometown of Savannah, Georgia, focusing on her home renovation alongside a fancy, L.A. designer. Investing everything she has into a lemon of a house on the prestigious Tybee Island, Hattie puts her heart and soul into the renovation. But plans go awry when mysterious findings within the house lead to details of an unsolved disappearance of her high school teacher, and suddenly Hattie's career and life are in danger.
Listening to this story unfold in the audiobook version was truly delightful. I found myself completely lost in the setting of Tybee, and entirely invested in not only solving the mystery, but also Hattie's success and happiness. I enjoyed this book as it was exactly what I was hoping it would be - a fun read, perfect for summertime/warm weather, that had a little depth and mystery to keep me bonded. The narrator was truly pleasant, and I felt the inflections and tone kept me intrigued throughout the book.

I really enjoyed this audiobook! It's been awhile since I've read a Mary Kay Andrews novel and ended up remembering why I liked them...not much spice, some romance, strong female characters, likable characters, and small town southern setting. I definitely recommend this one if any of those descriptions appeal to you!
