DNF. Unfortunately, this was a book I started multiple times but could just not get into. I appreciate having the opportunity to read this book, it was just not a good fit for me as a reader. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my gifted review copy.
First off, let me give a huge thank you to Netgalley for the arc of this fun story!
I love the way Mary Kay Andrews combines a light, fun storyline with a cozy murder mystery!
With a combination of home repair, murder, and romance... what's not to love!!
What a great book for fans of HGTV! The book follows the journey of a home contractor as she flips a beach house, and the whole thing is filmed for reality TV. This book was cute but it didn't seem like I was the right demographic for it. I could tell it was for an audience a bit older than me. There were also so many catholic references that went right over my head. I still enjoyed the book, it just wasn't the right fit for me. Thanks to #Netgalley and #MacmillanAudio for allowing me to listen to an advanced copy of this audiobook!
This will be the hot summer read! 4.5
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martins Press for allowing me to listen to this jewel.
Lovable full cast of characters. I love the rom com meets mystery aspect. Small town meets big city. It was an excellent story. Some of it could have been cut down, but overall it was well put together. Fast easy read and it kept me wondering what was next. I love the scenery she painted with the layout and the house.
Best quote: Sometimes the truth has to be enough.
Her use of mistress in reference to the dog made me giggle.
THE HOME-WRECKERS by mary kay andrews
⭐️⭐️⭐️
🛠 HGTV + murder mystery
🌊 beach read
my first mary kay andrews book! I did this as an audio book, and enjoyed it! It was a really great casual light listen. Around 20% of the way in, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, but the plot thickened and it was just what I needed to keep interest.
This has a little 🤏🏼 romance and some cozy mystery. It reminded me of books I’d read when I first started reading. It was good, but not an unputdownable book for me. I don’t think I would have finished if I did this on paper, because pace was a little too casual/slow, BUT I enjoyed listening while I walked, cleaned, etc.
PUB DAY : May 2nd 2022
Thanks @netgalley and @macmillanusa for the ARC — all opinions are my own and honest.
I struggled to finish this because I hated the characters so much. A "I'm not like the other girls" girl and a creepy man who falls in love instantly? Come on.
Mary Kay Andrews is a well established author of 26 books and knows her stuff. As an MKA fan, I was psyched to get the newest book, The Homewreckers, on audio as an arc.
As most of her books are, this one will be on everyone's beach read list. Unlike many of her previous works, however, The Homewreckers is a mixture of genres including mystery, romance, and chick lit combined with the addictive home improvement shows available 24/7 on cable and streaming. The main character, Hattie, a very young widow with skills and a dream, unwillingly ends up as part of a new home improvement tv show which is the bulk of the story, but then throw in a murder mystery to keep things interesting.
As an audio book fan, I enjoyed the narrator Kathleen McInerney and appreciated her ability to voice southern characters without an overwhelming accent.
The only tiny flaw in this book (and many may not consider this a flaw) - the audio book was 14 hours long. Not a normal length for something I'd classify as beach read or romance. I think it could have been just a tad shorter and still have been as good.
Thank you Macmillan Audio, Netgalley and Mary Kay Adams for allowing me to listen to this one in advance of it's May 3rd release.
The Homewreckers is the perfect beach read - a cute romance mixed with a little family drama, wrapped up in murder mystery. I listened to this book after graciously receiving a preview from Macmillan Audio and loved it. The narrator is fantastic and I adored the main character, Hattie, throughout. The romance unfolds a little slowly, but the mystery keeps the story rolling along and keeps you guessing. I definitely recommend grabbing this book!
The Homewreckers was soo good! Mary Kay Andrews always delivers. I absolutely love the beach read turned murder mystery. Throw in a side of romance and television drama, this book has it all. Love her writing style, highly recommend as always! The narrator and audio version of this novel was also fantastic!
Oh my goodness! I enjoyed this book so much! I had this one on audio and had a hard time stopping it when I had to. Hattie is a contractor along with her father-in-law in Savanah, Georgia, and she has had some missteps along the way but she is out to prove herself and when she is approached by a producer for a reality television show she turns him down until he is persistent and talks her into it. Now all she has to do is find a house to flip. She does with a house on Tybee Island that is in foreclosure and she gets it for a song but it comes with all the things you would imagine since it has been vacant for a couple years after a hurricane. Picture 100 year old house with all the overgrowth and Georgia heat and mosquitos that come with it. There is also the mystery of the wallet found in the wall and then the body. I predict this will turn out to be one of this summer's beach reads.
Mary Kay Andrews does it again! Another great work of fiction that incorporates a light-hearted love story with a twisty whodunnit. I really appreciated the back stories and character development, as well as the history of events and how they are linked. I found this book particularly entertaining as it centers around a house flipper who becomes featured on a new (fictional) tv show for a home improvement network. The concept of the show is intriguing and grants glimpses of behind-the-scenes scenarios, which are easy to imagine as incorporated into filming and development of existing "reality" shows.
Overall a quick and entertaining read.
I haven't read this author in a number of years, but this book made me remember what I loved so much about her books. This one is about friends, family, second chances, discovering yourself and some good old fashion mystery mixed in.
Hattie Kavanaugh is a young is a contractor who specializes in fixing up old houses. She began with her father in law as a teen and has become quite good at what she does. She has a failed project and is down on herself. She is offered a starring role in Homewreckers, a reality show about house flipping. She agrees, reluctantly, because she needs the money.
She's paired with an over the top designer who wants to ignore budget, and a determined but somewhat grumpy producer trying to keep them on scheduled. It's disaster after disaster at the job site that slows them down and haults progress at every turn. A mystery from the past is uncovered and threatens not only the project, but also Hattie herself.
Her bestie Cass was an added bonus to this book and I adored her. I became invested in Hattie and was hoping she would be successful at this project. I enjoyed watching her grown and become stronger and more confident as the book progressed. Also loved the mystery aspect as well, as they hunt for what happened to the beloved high school teacher from Hattie's teenage years and the secrets are revealed are shocking.
Many thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for providing me with an advance audio copy in exchange for my honest review.
Hattie flips houses for a living. She gets approached by a producer, Mo, about a new flipping show. I was immediately drawn in, I like flipping shows and I like Hattie. At first, Tre is mildly annoying. After awhile Tre turns into a decent human. This book was interesting enough with the TV angle, but then MKA throws in a little mystery. Now I turn a little obsessed, I wanna know what happened to this woman. I listened to the audio of this book, the narrators were perfect. This is my first MKA book and I loved it. I can't wait to listen to another one of her books.
This is my favorite book I’ve read for a while! I listened to the audio version and the narrator was awesome, she brought so much more to the story than just reading pages. I loved all the characters, the storyline was not only entertaining but kept me intrigued from beginning all the way to the very end! Perfect book for summer- would be great to read at the beach or poolside.
Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio for the chance to listen to this book prior to its release on May 17th.
I think the idea here was super cute and I was expecting to LOVE it. I love books that cross genres and the idea of a HGTV type home repair show, a little romance and a big mystery sounded right up my alley.
I ended up really struggling with this one and I think it was mostly due to the length, amount of characters and the mixing of genres. I think ultimately this book tried to be too much and ended up just confusing me.
Parts of it were still super cute and I still think a lot of people will resonate with it.
The audio was very well done!
3.5⭐️I did a combination of the ebook and audiobook.
What I liked: mystery element, the setting
What I didn’t like: this book was way too long (I think the core plot pieces could have been relayed much more succinctly) and the first 30% really dragged. The characters weren’t my favorites but I liked the romance at the end.
Hattie works restoring home and flipping houses. But when her most recent home is causing her to lose money, she’s unsure what her next steps are. The she gets the opportunity to star in a new home renovation show and it may be the answer to all of her money problems.
One thing I love about Mary Kay Andrews is her ability to create light, fun reads with a little bit of romance and a level of mystery that keeps you so intrigued and invested. On one hand, here we have a book about flipping houses and reality TV, but woven into it is the decades old mystery of a missing woman. Both story lines had me equally invested, but the two together made for such a great read. I loved all the characters in this book - they were all very well-developed with distinct personalities that really added to the story. The home improvement angle was a fun plot that had this reality tv loving girl so happy. This was a fun, light read that would be perfect to take to the pool or beach!
I switched between the ebook and audiobook for this one. The narrator, Daphne Kouma was a joy to listen to. I found myself not wanting to stop when listening to the audiobook.
Thank you to St Martin’s Press, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for the advanced copies.
This was such a fun mixture of romance, healing, moving forward, and.... murder! I loved how Andrews was able to weave all these things together to seamlessly create a beautiful story!
Hattie is a young widow and works with her father-in-law restoring old Savannah homes to their former glory. I really loved Hattie. She is grieving but is such a fun woman. Watching her heal and grow throughout this story felt like watching a good friend go through a transformation. The grief isn't heavy, it's been quite a few years since she lost her husband, so I still completely feel this is a beach read!
There is a murder mystery, and it's a light one. I would not recommend this to someone that wants a murder mystery book. This is a story about a woman rehabbing a home and coming out of her shell. The murder mystery is a side-story, and it's good, but it's not the main focus of the story.
I thought the characters were the most enjoyable part of this book. Hattie is a delight, and her friends and support system are fantastic. The TV crew that comes to shoot the reality tv show bring color and frustration to the story, and it makes the story even more compelling.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one! I would recommend this to someone looking for a beach read or a story about moving forward in life!
MKA is an automatic read author for me. As in, I don't even bother reading the book description. So I was ecstatic when I was given an advance audio copy.
This book has it all. Hattie, a widow, restores old homes in Savannah. She is suddenly given the opportunity to film a reality show. This comes with lots of drama- they find an item belonging to a long missing woman, she butts heads with her co-star, there are several romances, the renovation undergoes multiple catastrophes, etc.... This book has no slow moments!
While I enjoyed it, it is not my favorite MKA book. And I think the reason is that there was SO much going on. It is a solid read, just not my favorite.
I listened to the audio. Kathleen McInerney always does a stellar job.
I received an audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews is my second book from this author. I now know that these books are not for me and will save any further ARCs for fans.
There was a lot going on in this book: romance, home renovation show, murder, mystery, adultery, missing person. While I did enjoy some parts, the majority of the time I was just waiting to find out how the story would end.
The narrator, Kathleen McInerney, did a fantastic job though and I did enjoy the audiobook because of her.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
