Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book early. I went into it expecting a really fun, 27 Dresses-esque rom com about a jilted bride going to a bunch of weddings and finding happiness again. That is kind of what you get from this book but its definitely more of a downer than I wanted it to be. This book is about Freya. Her fiance breaks up with her the day before their wedding and she is understandably heartbroken. Her wedding was supposed to kick off wedding season (in March) and then she had 7 weddings, ending with her best friend/cousin in September. The first 1/4 of the book is just her wallowing in her breakup pain. Then her friends give her the challenge of something to do at each wedding (ex: come home with cuff links, etc.). She starts going to the weddings and meets a guy named Jamie. They sort of clash but in a fun and quirky way. Literally the entire book she is focused on her ex though. The finale and HEA doesn't happen until the VERY END. I really wanted to see Freya say FU and move on a lot quicker than she did. The book got monotonous and depressing after so much of the same.
Daphne Kouma is an excellent narrator. She truly brought this book to life. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her narrate this book. She did an incredible job with changing her voice, doing different dialects, and accents. Her expressions and enthusiasm was perfect. I would definitely recommend this audiobook to anyone interested. As well, I'd love to listen to more audiobooks that she has narrated.
*I received a copy of this audiobook on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, narrator, publisher, and NetGalley for this opportunity*
In THE WEDDING SEASON, Freya finds herself in a broom cupboard, the day before her wedding, dumped by her partner of twelve years. Arguably a horrid situation for anyone to find themselves in, but the situation is compacted by the fact she has an additional seven weddings to attend during that summer season.
This book was everything I wanted and more. Not a traditional rom-com book (i.e. no heavy handed romance or spicy passages), TWS is an utterly charming book about how a woman rebuilds her life with the help of her friends and family. There is a love interest, but he doesn't appear until well into the book, and their relationship is not something the story centers on. The book primarily focuses on the emotional journey Freya undertakes as she adjusts to being single for the first time in over a decade; aided by her fantastic best friends and their well-intended, if not bizarre, task list to get her through each wedding.
The narrator, Daphne Kouma, did a phenomenal job. She breathed life into the characters and story, and did a wonderful job of adding her own hilarious flair to Freya's (many) mental cartwheels and side tangents. Part of the reason I adored this book so much was because of how real Freya felt-- her development felt natural and well earned, and Kouma's performance made her feel even more like a friend rather than a character.
THE WEDDING SEASON is perfect for fans of realistic chick lit, for people who love to laugh at silly antics, and for those who enjoy people finding love in its many forms.
Freya is dumped by her fiancé the day before their wedding. Obviously, she is devastated. Will she ever recover? How will she get through an entire wedding season of all her friends and make it out on the other side? Freya’s wedding was supposed to be the start of the wedding season. She is determined to power through and attend all these weddings with a smile on her face. Her good friends Ruby and Leo create a list of challenges that she must complete for each wedding she attends to help distract Freya. I love how supportive all of Freya’s friends were to her in her time of need.
This was a fun, sweet, emotional, and heartwarming story while still having elements of heartbreak. This wasn’t as much of a rom com as I expected, but more about Freya’s journey to self-discovery. The characters at the beginning seemed stagnant but did grow the further I read on. The internal struggles of Freya were very realistic. The beginning of the story was slow, but it did pick up nicely about 30% of the way through. At the end of the book, it was all nicely wrapped up. This was a sweet story about friendship and self-finding oneself.
THE WEDDING SEASON opens during Freya and Matthew's wedding weekend. They're kicking off the wedding season in their friend group, hosting the first of eight that year. Except they don't walk down the aisle.
Freya had been with Matthew for 12 years before he unceremoniously told her he couldn't go through with the wedding. Author Katy Birchall really captured the aftermath of a breakup -- the pain, the confusion, the glimmer of (perhaps misguided) hope.
Luckily Freya's got two good friends in Ruby and Leo; they devise a series of challenges for Freya to complete at each wedding as a distraction, not to mention a way to get her mojo back. I enjoyed rooting for Freya as she came into her own and getting little peeks at the various weddings. (I do, however, have mixed feelings on the ending.)
I liked the narration by Daphne Kouma. (I believe this is the first book I've listened to narrated by Kouma; she did one of the voices for the Paris Apartment but I read that via physical copy.) I especially liked the way she conveyed indignation.
The Wedding Season by Katy Birchall
Contemporary chick lit. Lite romance.
Freya’s fiancé calls off their wedding the day before they were to be married. Freya’s friends rally around her and help plan a way for her to focus on a challenge rather than her broken engagement. She has several other weddings she will have to attend over the upcoming season.
🎧 I listened to an audiobook version narrated by Daphne Kouma. She performs the narration with and English / British accent. It was well done and amusing for its emotional tangents.
I usually listen to audiobooks at 1.4 but I had to slow this down a bit to 1.2 for the accent since I’m from the States. The narration is done with a light touch from the female perspective in her mid 20’s approximately.
Most of this book dealt with Freya’s emotional journey between the breakup and her friends and family support getting over the trauma. She meets new people and is forced (kindly) to think about more than just herself. Only a small portion at the end is about a new romance but that fills Freya and the reader with hope and joy. So while it’s heartbreaking to start with, the ending is sweet and cheerful.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley and Macmillan Audio.
This book follows Freya through a summer of weddings after being dumped the day before her own wedding. In order to distract her, her best friends make a series of challenges for her to complete at each subsequent wedding.
Hilarity ensues as she completes the fun and crazy challenges at each wedding and she meets some fun and "special" people along the way.
I loved following along with Freya in her grief and acceptance and watching how realistically everything was handled. She definitely was a likeable and relatable main character which is big for me.
I could imagine this playing out as a movie the whole time and would love to see this played out on the big screen. Do yourself a favor and add this to your summer TBR!
Thank you so much to MacMillan Audio for the chance to listen to this audiobook prior to release. The narration was perfect! This will be available for purchase tomorrow!!
What a fabulous romcom! This was a treat.
It is like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days meets 20 Dresses, Lovable characters. Laugh out loud moments. Cringe Moments with a lot of reflective moments too. Great little reminders for anyone trying to heal a heartbreak.
I binged this one in one spring. It was cute but predictable. I find most romcoms are though. I still really enjoyed it and plan to read some of the authors backlog.
I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. This is my first book by this author. I loved every second of it! I listened to it in audio. The narrator did a fantastic job!
This book was heartwarming, funny in parts and sad in others but it held my attention the whole time. It hit me in all the feels. The character arc-her journey- was so beautiful. I love how she came into her own, accepting her break up and opening herself up for a new relationship. I also love how opening herself back up to her mother was also a huge part of her journey. I loved the tasks the heroine had to accomplish. This book was a wonderful women’s fiction novel. What a great beach read this book would make. Huge thank you to the audio publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to listen and review this book!
A really solid book about self-discovery post-break up. There were certainly some laughable moments, but I enjoyed being along for the ride as Freya gains a better understanding of herself. Also, loved the British humor!!
After 12 years of being together, when Freya's fiancé calls off their wedding the day before it's set to occur, she understandably goes in to a bit of a tailspin. You know what doesn't help matters? Having to attend a summer filled with all of her friends nuptials. In order to make things interesting, her friends make a list of challenges for Freya to complete at each event. By the time Summer is over Freya will have gone on quite the journey and maybe learned a thing or two along the way.
I really enjoyed this book. There was a lot about the book that gave me Bridget Jones's Diary vibes.....which is a good thing! The first part was a bit somber as Freya dealt with her heartbreak. The dry/witter banter had me laughing out loud and I loved the friendships Freya had. Overall a nice heartfelt read with minimum spice (think part rom-com/part women's fiction). I definitely plan on circling back to Birchall's last book: The Secret Bridesmaid. Loved Daphne Kouma's narration, she conveyed all of Freya's feelings well and nailed the comedic timing.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had to read this. Not only because I'm a sucker for romcoms but because the description sounded really interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This audiobook should come with a warning label! Listening to this book will cause spontaneous bursts of laughter that can be inappropriate if you are trying to quietly listen while in public! Yes, that was me! So sorry to the other customers in the coffeehouse that I disturbed by my inappropriate laughter. Truth be told, I'm not all that sorry actually. If you can't feel the joy that a book brings to you, then that is on you, but I digress. This book is an outstanding look at surviving humiliation and pain with the help of your good friends and the people you surround yourself with. We've all been there with the bad breakups and dysfunctional family relationships that we have to navigate while managing to get through the day with minimal embarrassment of our own awkwardness and actions. I've not read anything from this author before, but I will be searching for more from her as this book was wildly entertaining, brought up many emotions and ultimately gave me a day of laughter that was an absolute delight! I don't give many rom coms 5 stars as they are typically good books, but don't hit the level of stellar literature for me. However, this book absolutely earned 5 stars by giving me full on belly laughs! I absolutely love Freya and would love to have her as a friend in the real world and not just as a book character friend! The narrator did an outstanding job of helping bring the authors words, emotions and plot to life! I can't wait for more from both this author and narrator!
The Wedding Season is a fun read that follows Freya after her fiance calls off their wedding (the day before after 12 years of dating!!). What follows is Freya attempting to get through seven weddings over the summer with the help of a list of activities her friends came up with for her.
So many parts of this book had me laughing. I loved Freya and her journey to discover herself, her friend group, especially Ruby and Leo, and the activities she had to do. I didn't mind that the romance was a sub=plot here because Freya's story and how she worked through her heartbreak was compelling.
I enjoyed the audio and found it easy to listen to it at an increased speed!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Fantastic! Honestly I really enjoyed this read. This book follows a woman left at the alter (or close by the alter) and her journey to recover from the break up of a lifetime during the start of wedding season. Her wedding was going to be the first of many she would attend in the upcoming months and now that she's single her best friends come up with a plan to make sure that the time would be memorable.
The friend group and main characters are quirky and funny as they navigate the crazy situation they find themselves in. The book starts off with a bang and then starts to slow down but right when I started to say "okay where is this going?" they introduce the list of challenges and I found myself unable to put the book down. You laugh along with the characters and really root for the main character, Freya, to come into her own.
Anyone who has been through a tough break up will be able to relate and enjoy this book. The narrator was great to listen to and really was a great voice for Freya. The book reminds me a lot of a Sophie Kinsella book, well written, light hearted but overall a great story. If someone you know is looking for a light hearted beach read than this is the book to gift. I've already recommended this book and will keep doing so. Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to pick this book up!
A survival guide to the wedding season! After 12 years together, Freya gets dumped the night before her wedding. This was a fun story and a very quick read! A reminder to try new things and live your life to the fullest.
This was a lot of fun to read.
No spice in it, and I didn't even care.
I adored the camaraderie Leo, Ruby and Freya have; the giggles just kept coming.
The narration is fabulous, and I will definitely be looking for more from both Katy Birchall & Daphne Kouma. Hopefully they partner again.
Much love to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my DRC
The Wedding Season is a hilarious story about Freda and her journey of self discovery after being jilted the day before her wedding day. With the help of her friends, Freda begins to live her life a little more openly and she meets a fun group of characters along the way.
What I liked:
This book is laugh out loud hilarious
Steady character development
Solid descriptions of the various locations and countries
The will they won’t they vibe
What I didn’t like:
Fredas inner voice got annoying at times; I listened to this as an audiobook so it could be an audio versus book thing.
That’s it! I consider this a funny beach summer read.
Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and author, Kate Birchall, for an eARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
After being dumped the day before her wedding to her boyfriend of 12 years, Freya is left to confront her life as a single woman. On top of that she has 7 weddings to attend the following summer. It is the stages of acceptance after a big break up and all that entails.
This was a cute story! I listened to the audiobook and it was fun to listen to but kinda slow start for me. All of the main characters were likeable but I never got super invested. It was a fun wedding romcom and I enjoyed the humor.
