This book was a fun treat! I loved it! It was a good reset after I read a heavier book. It kept me flipping pages well past my bedtime!!
Love that this is a sequel to Conviction! I loved the idea of reading about Anna and Finn again. But this wasn’t as great as the first novel where you somehow fell in love with these two quirky characters. Confidence was a struggle for me.
I love the cover and enjoyed the chance to meet up with characters from their first book. Just felt a little wobbly in areas.
i wanted more form this , having loved Conviction. There are so many podcast trope books right now on the market, its the next new thing to write about. I listened to Conviction and read Confidence so i could just be missing that format. Confidence is super scattered. The Urban Exploring was the best part of this, and new to me. Just a middle of the road read for me unfortunately.
I was happy to find out that there is a sequel to Conviction! Anna & Fin are a duo that shouldn’t make sense but they do (like all of my real life favorite podcasters).
While on the ultimate vacation from hell, Anna is sent a message from a listener with a link to a YouTube video from Lisa Lee’s UrbEx channel. While filming her most recently posted video, Lisa finds a silver box in the abandoned home she’s exploring. Shortly after she releases the video, Lisa comes up missing and the sliver box is put up for auction. No one (except Anna & Fin) cares that Lisa is missing but the whole world is going nuts over the sliver box. It is believed to be a holy relic and is tied to an allegedly curse.
There are lots of layers to this story. You don’t know who’s being honest or who’s lying. And if you haven’t already, you will question people’s religious convictions.
Side note, I’ve actually watched urban explorer videos before. They can be kinda creepy, they explore abandoned homes or places. It makes you wonder what happened to make them abandon this homes and leave everything inside.
I received this ARC free from NetGalley & the publisher, theses are my honest opinions.
Unfortunately, Confidence by Denise Mina did not live up to the hype of her previous book Conviction. Confidence starts with a missing girl and a treasure that is up for auction, and Fin and Anna are back on the case for their podcast.
What I liked: I thought the beginning with the part about urban exploring was interesting. I also still like Anna and Fin as characters but I didn’t feel like they were the focus of this book. I like the concept of working a podcast into the plot but this particular story did not capture my attention.
What could be better: The story was incredibly convoluted and I truly did not care that much about the historic artifact or its background. I wasn’t that interested in the characters at the focus of this story like Bram and Marcos. It was kind of all over the place and I found myself wishing for it to end.
Sadly, this book is a one-star read for me. I kept waiting for the book to get better but it just didn't. I don’t think the author was able to recapture the magic that Conviction had and the additional characters just made it harder to follow. If you didn’t read the previous book and you are interested in a mystery about the provenance of artifacts, you may enjoy this read.
*Please note that the ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*
I really enjoyed Conviction, and I was really excited to rejoin Anna and Fin as they searched for a missing girl and the relic she stole. I really enjoyed the fact that so much of the story happens in France and includes the seedy world of stolen antiques.
Overall, I had trouble with the plot. It didn't seem as tightly woven as the author's other books. There were also a lot of characters, many of whom didn't matter for the overall plot.
This book was such a disappointment 😔 I absolutely loved Conviction and was beyond excited to get an #arc of the sequel. Sadly, I couldn’t get into the story or connect with any of the characters. The plot was boring and never really got off the ground. There were a lot of details being thrown at you, too many, and it felt overwhelming at times. It got to a point where I just wanted it to be over so I could move on to something else. I absolutely would not recommend this. 2.5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️✨
This novel of intrigue and confidence games covers settings in Scotland, Italy and France. It follows detective/crime podcast author Anna and her work partner Fin as they attempt to solve the disappearance of Lisa Lee plus the apparent theft of a priceless Christian artifact: the Voyniche Casket. As much as I empathized with Anna on her quest, I was put off by the unlikeable characters in this novel. Not my favorite Mina mystery.
I loved this book! It’s extremely well written making it a pleasure to read. The story and characters are both well developed and fast paced. Lots of attention to detail and the plot is captivating with lots of twists and turns. A very engrossing read and an author I’d love to read more from. Highly recommend!
Like it's cover, Confidence by Denise Mina is bright, exuberant and a bit over the top ! We join Anna and Fin from book 1 (Conviction), they are two infamous podcasters that get to the bottom of unsolved murders. Although the scene is set amongst Anna's extended family, they are more of a foil than a focus. When Anna and Fin hear about the disappearance of Lisa Lee-a popular youtube urban explorer, they are drawn to the story and utilize their fans for more information. Before long they are snarled within a large scale, multi-nation, calamity that includes religious icons, centuries old art and forgeries. It's a larger than life, expansive and action packed and I loved all of it. If you like your mysteries, ironic, quick moving and boisterous, then this is a novel for you!

Quite possibly the best book I’ve read all year. Realistic characters incredibly interesting story. I was immediately drawn into the plot and spellbound the entire time I was reading.
