I’m not sure if it was the way the book started or the author’s voice and style of writing, but I had a hard time getting into this story. It took a while before I felt invested and I never really warmed up to Cal. I enjoyed Harriet’s character and her friendship with Lorna and thought Sam was fun but something was missing for me with Cal, I didn’t really feel like I got to know him.
Witty dialogues, tension, grief, cheating, and friendship. Great read! Will definitely read more of this author!
3.5/5 stars!!
To put it simply, this book was a great summer read! I loved the main character Harriet and her growth throughout the book. It’s honestly so much more than just a romance book which I wasn’t expecting. That being said, I was expecting some more romance but it did end up being more of a subplot and I was anticipating it to be more romance focused. I also felt like the writing was a bit confusing to me at times. I think it was the way it was formatted and the writing style was a lot different than I’m used to. I had to look up a good amount of words because I was not understanding what was happening haha! I would like to preface that I am American so that’s def a factor as to why. I also typically read romance books in first person as well so it took a bit to get used to. However, these are all just tiny things and a personal opinion! Overall, it was a wonderful read and I would definitely recommend it!
Thank you so much netgalley & Avon and Harper Voyager for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
I’ve read a couple of Mhairi McFarlane’s books and really enjoyed both of them so I was so excited when I got approved for this one! It took me a little bit to really get into it but once I did, I didn’t wanna put it down. This book wasn’t as romance focused as I expected but I honestly didn’t mind that. While I did enjoy the main romance, I loved getting to see Scott’s ex-girlfriends come together and stand against him even more.
When Harriet, a wedding photographer who never wants to get married, ends her long term relationship with her boyfriend after he proposes, she needs to find a new place to live. When she works a wedding and sees her ex boyfriend, she is forced to to face some things from her past that are still haunting her years later. This book is so much more than a book about love and I don't think it would be considered a romance. It's about losing yourself, finding yourself, and dealing with some of the hardest issues life can throw at you.
This is a hard story to review without spoilers. Just like other books I have read by Mhairi McFarlane, the synopsis did not fully prepare me for what I was in for, but in a good way. I love the relationship that Harriet has with her best friend Lorna, as well as the friendships that she makes along the way. Cal and Sam are amazing, and there was a lot of humor throughout.
I had hoped for more romance, I really liked Cal and looked forward to seeing him and Harriet together, but that part felt a bit rushed. Also, there were some things that came up, that I felt might be used further later on that weren't referenced again and so I felt like those parts were unnecessary.
Mad about you-book review
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
This book, wow started and finished in one day. This is not at all what I thought it was going to be. Yes this is about romance, no spice. The character growth in this book is TOP NOTCH. This was my first book by this author and I loved it.
Romance is NOT the focus of this book, think that needs to be said going into it. This book is about trials, abusive past and partners, letting go of the past, finding your worth, discovering what you can be. The connect between cal and Harriet is soooo sweet and genuine, I just love him. I loved every minute of their banter and friendship.
I also LOVED the friendships in this story they were amazing. I don’t want to give any spoilers but that scene at the end, I felt like it was the avengers coming together to save the day!!!
Harriet was a bad a** FMC. The reason I am giving this a 3.5 and not 4 is that I wanted more romance. BUT I think this is what that author wanted! This book gave me more women’s fiction with a pretty heavy plot of domestic abuse. Knowing that, if that is a TW for you then I would avoid this book.
Overall this was a super fun and short read. I highly recommend this book if you are into women’s fiction novels!
Thank you NetGallery and the publisher for this amazing arc!
This book wasn’t perfect but it was so much fun!!
What I didn’t quite love:
-So. Many. Adverbs.
-Lack of resolution of certain characters
-Unnecessary language
But most of that is overshadowed by the wonderful characterization of Harriet and Cal. The way they grew as friends and the mature way that he supported her was so refreshing. A lot of rom-coms focus on lust before love and rush into love and this book definitely took its time. The romance was a strong undercurrent in this book, but our main plot line was Harriet dealing with past trauma.
Also, I was grateful for the fade to black scene. I get tired of skipping over spicy scenes. 😅

Mad About You follows Harriet, a wedding photographer. She’s been dating a quite wealthy man she found on a dating app for approximately two years. They live together. Once he proposes (how dare he!) she breaks it off and moves into the first available flat she can find. Her new roommate Cal happens be her new landlord. Cal is also escaping a less than ideal relationship. Harriet’s life begins to steadily unravel. Her best friend Lorna and her unlikely allie Cal help keep her grounded as she treads through a past insidious relationship that comes back to haunt her.
I would say if you are looking for a romance then you will be sufficiently underwhelmed. The book mostly deals with personal growth and breakups; only entertaining a positive romantic relationship around 96%. Yes, you read that correct, at 96 %. This story is mostly Harriet figuring herself out and her steadfast friendships etc. Unfortunately I was not such a big fan of Harriet and the choices she made. Which translated to it being difficult to root for her. I was expecting more a a chick-lit lighthearted rom-com but this isn’t that at all. This was a bit sad and heavy. There were scattered funny bits but not enough for me to dub this a rom-com in the slightest. The writing is a bit wordy and takes some getting used to. I wished we got more of the other characters It felt like yes, Harriet was the main character and we got a bunch of her but I hardly know anyone else at all which is a little strange.
I would recommend this book to those that are into women’s fiction but not romance. People who like the movie, The First Wives Club. Those that have money to burn to prove a point.
This book made me feel so many things. While listed as a romance novel, the romance was not at center stage throughout the book. Instead, we get to see Harriet, a 35 year old wedding photographer, who isn’t interested in getting married. Harriet ends things with her long-time boyfriend when he unexpectedly proposes at his parents’ 40th anniversary celebration. Breaking up with Jon causes Harriet to reflect on the relationships she’s been in and we get a glimpse into her troubled past as she moves on with her life.
I really enjoyed Harriet’s character and getting to see the way she handled her past and the relationships she built along the way.
I can't go past the "Game On" flower delivery... It's just too much for me. I read mostly for escape these days - life is too hard as it is.
Mad About You by Mhairi McFarlane is a novel about Harriett, a wedding photographer, who breaks up with her ‘perfect’ boyfriend and searches for what she really wants in life. She moved in with Cal, a hopeless romantic and their relationship goes from strangers to friends to possibly more.
I had high hopes for this book after reading the description and seeing other reviews, but I was disappointed. This would have been a DNF for me if I hadn’t have received and ARC from the publisher, I felt I owed the book a full chance. I was expecting a nice romantic comedy but it fell very short for me. There was very little romance, until the last chapter, and I couldn’t connect with the characters. I found Harriet to be annoying and very good at shooting herself in her own foot and then being clueless as to why the things caused by her actions were happening to her. Cal wasn’t too bad, I think he would have been a character I really liked if he was given half a chance with a female lead that didn’t drive me crazy. I was hoping for a lot more romance in this book, but instead found myself trying to push through to get to the end so I could move onto my next read. I hope if you give this book a chance you have better luck than me, there are a lot of great reviews for this book out there, but this just wasn’t for me.
I enjoyed this book, but I wish that it was more about the female protagonist's relationship with her landlord. It dwelled a lot on her past relationships and more coverage was needed for the build up of the new relationship. I really felt this did not match the description and the way it was billed. That said, library patrons should really enjoy this book and this is another solid offering by the author.
This is not really romance although there is a love story within its pages. Instead it is book that focuses on Harriet as she finally deals with her unhealthy past relationships and grows stronger and more confident in herself. This is not to say that the love story sprinkled in isn’t charming.. It absolutely is.. However the other relationships Harriet finds are even more special. There may be a slight excess of villainous characters but I was rooting for Harriet vehemently. McFarlane is an author whose books I make sure never to miss and I don’t care what genre she chooses to write-romance, women’s fiction, true crime- I will read it all.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a very high three stars but not quite a four. I do love reading most everything Mhairi McFarlane writes. She has a great vocabulary and so much everyday British-ness that makes her books feel very of the times.
I did really like Mad About You but a few caveats. The title, cover, and blurb are all misleading. Yes, there's a romance in this book and it involves two people who happen to end up in the same house and who have a previous connection of sorts, but this really isn't a Romance. Like most of Mhairi McFarlane's books, this is about a woman coming into her own and overcoming something pretty big from her past with the help of friends...plus there's a cute, nice, sexy, occasionally broody guy who has appeared on her radar.
The three++ stars instead of four is because I felt the story meandered a bit at the beginning. Definitely didn't flow quite as well as [book:If I Never Met You|51213487] or [book:Just Last Night|54870201], and there were a lot of revelations and misunderstandings that needed to be corrected. Perhaps the best part, for me, are McFarlane's turns of phrase (though maybe a little heavy handed at the beginning). She has lots of pithy and amusing sentences that lead to strong banter.
Such a great read! I completely devoured Mad About You, Mhairi McFarlane’s latest novel! This must read melds the women’s fiction and romance genres to create a witty storyline! Centering around Harriet and Cal, two people who both found themselves running from their previous relationship (literally). These two have now in a very kismet way been put into each other lives as a friend in a time of need! I truly adore what Mhairi had in mind for them!
This novel had me staying up way past my bedtime! I loved the humor and sweetness throughout, but what I didn’t expect was the depth! I found the characters and their problems so very realistic and relatable! I have enjoyed all of the novels I’ve read from Mhairi McFarlane and this 5 star book could be my favorite book from her to date! Mad About You is a must read that I recommend to everyone!!!
I liked the theme and the idea but the execution fell flat for me. It was too overdone.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the ARC.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought I was getting into a romance novel, but the story is really more about the main character's growth with the romance being a sub-plot.
The writing was good. The beginning of the book was a little slow, but once I got about 30% in, I felt the pace picked up a good deal. The characters were my favorite part of this book. I felt like they were very well written, and I loved seeing Harriet's growth as the story moves along. The author did a great job showing the emotions that Harriet works through as she comes to some realizations about her past relationships and decisions. The secondary characters were also well written.
The one thing I didn't like about this book was that I felt there was a touch too much going on. There were multiple subplots that impacted the main plot, but it felt like there was almost too many to keep track of.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this book to others.
Thanks to Netgally and Avon books for a copy in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this novel! The focus is not the romance (which is more of a side plot) but really the protagonist’s journey and growth as she confronts some traumas from her past. Even though the book addresses some serious topics, it also has many romcom elements that made me smile and laugh in delight. This was my second MM novel, and I’m looking forward to her next work!

Mad About You Review
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Mad About You was my first ARC from Netgalley and I could not have asked for a better first read from the site. Everything about Mhairi McFarland’s upcoming release is incredible. The story follows Harriet, a wedding photographer after she breaks up with her “perfect” boyfriend and begins to rent a room from a somewhat mutual man named Cal. Not only do Harriet and Cal find out that they have a personal connection, they also find out something else about their relationship that they failed to realize until she moved in. This story is packed with witty humor, authentic love, and the relentless spirit of someone who has been knocked down and is slowly finding their way back. Not only is Mad About You a stellar romantic comedy, but the aspects of friendship and how to turn something bad into something beautiful also run through the novel amazingly. Pub day for McFarland’s novel is August 9 and I encourage everyone to get a copy as soon as they can!
While I enjoyed this book and the beginning pulled you in, it felt a little slow paced. I had to do some googling for sayings I didn't understand, but overall enjoyed the book!
