As a teacher, I am constantly trying to encourage my 1st graders to partake in only positive digital citizenship. This book about using social media for good is such a great source of support and encouragement for this!
Packed with reasonable guidance and tips in concise, digestible blocks. This uplifting guide full of colorful illustrations includes easily accessible terms, puts things into context, and validates the many different ways girls use social media.
Ok, ok- I know that the internet gets a bad rep, and sometimes for good reason- BUT- Better Connected is a perfect example of how much GOOD it can do. If it weren't for the connections I've made online, I probably would remove myself from social media and the like- but it truly does bring out the best in some of us and enhances our lives in unseen ways.
From building bonds and communities, heightening creativity and ingenuity, promoting diversity and inclusion all while also cultivating and nurturing the growth of education and learning- this mom and daughter duo crafted such an informative book on the POSTIVES that can come from being 'online'. Will you still have to sift through the garbage that you'll find in chat rooms, FB posts and IG stories?- Absolutely, but you'll be better equipped to have the tools to know HOW to sift and what to look for. You'll learn how to detect and report things that don't seem or feel right to you. There are sooo many sprinkles and splashes of wisdom throughout this book (& a lot of things I don't think I would necessarily think about on a daily basis).
Filled with a plethora of resources, helpful tricks, & safety tips- I highly suggest picking this one up to not only have an important discussion with your child/teen or student- but to be educated YOURSELF.
I found one of the best aspects of this book is that it's not just a mother writing on a topic geared towards the younger generation and social media- it's a combined effort with her daughter. Glimpses of conversations between them, and their own unique thoughts on a topic are found popped on the pages to give you a sense of relatability. If I was a teenager reading this, I can't say that I would be in the same headspace (term used in the book) as the mother so I found that it is a whole heck of a lot more poignant to hear it from your peers.
I immensely recommend adding this to your classrooms if you teach middle/high school students- it's a wealth of knowledge and promotes inspiration and positive online interactions.
This non-fiction text teaches young girls about the advantages and risks of being connected on the internet. From positives like activism and passion projects to making smart choices on social media to protect your privacy, this book demonstrates how fun and important the internet is, while also reminding young preteens and teens that being safe on the internet is very important. With full colour photos as well as cartoon-ish pictures, alojng with text boxes, and fun colourful backgrounds, this book will be appealing to middle grade readers. As a teacher, I would definitely recommend this book to parents and teachers of girls in the grade 4-9 range who are interested in technology and want to make a difference in their communities. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this excellent book!
Very interesting and informative. Social media is often talked about how it is negatively impacting us especially younger kids so this was a great look at positive ways.
I love how this book talks about the positive side of social media! It's very uplifting to hear about the different ways social media can be used to help others and cause social change!
I always see books and articles depicting the "bad" side of social media - heck, I see the effects in my 5th grade classroom daily - but there can be a positive way to use social media and the internet. This book depicts the positive influence social media, internet, and even technology can have on a group of people. The images used were appropriate and not too overwhelming. Some chapters were a tad long, but I didnt lose interest. This is wonderful topic for students in middle and high school - and even upper elementary grades to read.
Better Connected is a great technology resource for (I'd say) middle and high schoolers. It discusses the various ways social media and the internet can be used for good, for connection. I loved all the illustrations and photographs sprinkled throughout the book. While the chapters were lengthy, they provided so many text boxes and different topics, it felt fun to read!!
