I really wish I had better things to say about it. I’m definitely all for BIPOC authors and I try to read diverse perspectives. But this just fell flat. The romance was not interesting. There was no spark and I was just left feeling meh about it. I did really love the concept of the bookstore and the questionable backstory of the founder though. I would say check it out if you’re looking for a lighthearted quick read! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book!
Maggie is a woman who swoops into Bell River to help her friend run a bookstore…..a hopelessly encumbered bookstore with ridiculous rules dictated by the Bell Society; the society built to promote local author and legend.
.
Free spirit Maggie finds companionship with the Bell Society narc and, after income-gaining inventory is removed from friend Rachel’s store, starts running a book speakeasy.
But the Bell Society isn’t as squeaky clean as they’d like to appear…can Maggie get them to loosen their rules and help the town become unencumbered?
I love reading about bookshops and this one was no exception. Thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Landmark for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Full review to come on Goodreads and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy.
I'm not sure why Shauna Robinson isn't on everyone's radar, because she should be! This is a gem of a book. I loved the humor, the romance, and the attention to detail when it came to books. Perfect concoction of a story that came together for a high five stars.
This book has a Hallmark/Gilmore Girls vibe that I loved. Warm and cozy, it makes you want to sit and read it with a cup of tea and a warm blanket by the fire. Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves a good small town, funny, charming and book loving read.
I want to thank NetGalley, Shauna Robinson and SOURCEBOOKS Landmark, Sourcebooks Landmark for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with my first eARC!
I really really enjoyed this book, a great story of self-discovery. My first Shauna Robinson book, but certainly not my last!
I really enjoyed Shauna Robinson’s debut novel and was excited to dive into her latest. With THE BANNED BOOKSHOP OF MAGGIE BANKS, Robinson gives us a sweet and relatable story about friendship and self-discovery featuring a heroine who is easy to love and root for. The writing is crisp and witty, and the small town setting is perfect for the story.
This book is full of heart and humour. I enjoyed it immensely and can’t wait to read whatever Robinson writes next.
My thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark for the advanced reading copy.
Such a fun book for book lovers. Maggie Banks comes to help out in a book store while her BFF is on maternity leave, but Maggie is not much of a book lover herself and even more depressing the bookstore is only allowed to sell old classics.
Maggie decides to shake things up and does a fine job of it.
If you think you may be offended by classics being made fun of maybe this is not the book for you.
Some of the scenarios are improbable but it didn’t matter to me I had fun reading this book.
The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks is a cute rom com esque book. Maggie was sadly an irritating protagonist but I stayed for the plot.
Thank you NG and Sourcebooks Landmark for this ARC in exchange for an unbiased review!
This book was fantastic. I really enjoyed Maggie as the primary character. She was written fantastically, a very likable character who grows throughout the story and finds herself. Big small town vibes with quirky characters. Not the most amazing story that I will be recommending to everyone but definitely a quick enjoyable read
I really liked this book. The setting was captivating and the characters were charming, and it is a very relevant story to society right now. Would recommend!
I want to open a bookstore now after reading The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks! Maggie makes it seem so easy!
Anti-bookworm Maggie Banks comes to Bell River to help out in her best friend’s bookstore. But she struggles to follow the strict rules put in place by the historic society, and eventually decides to play by her own rule book in order to bring new life to the store.
Maggie starts an ”illegal” book club with fun events for readers to enjoy, which you would think would be difficult as she gets closer to one of the historical society’s strictest employees. Her secrets grow when she finds out about some history that has been hidden in the town.
How will Maggie get out of this one?
I really enjoyed this one! I had read Must Love Books by Shauna Robinson before, and this one felt a little lighter than her debut novel. Despite its lightness, it does tackle the issues of young people trying to find their fit in the world (while also making rent) and the dangers of holding too tight onto tradition.
One thing Shauna Robinson will do is feature some amazing books to add to your TBR, contemporary and classics. It is always fun seeing shoutouts to other books inside of a story.
I also enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers in the budding romance between Malcolm and Maggie. I wish Malcolm may have been flushed out a bit more, but their romance was super cute.
Overall, I would recommend this book. It is cute, adequately paced, and lots of fun. Before you know it, you will also be a part of Maggie Army!
The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks was amazingly whitty, romantic, and relatable! I adored the main character Maggie because she seemed realistic. I loved that she didn’t have her life all figured out and established because in the real world not everyone does!
I loved the chemistry between her and Malcolm. I thought their personalities were incredibly cute and opposite, but no so different as to wonder if they should or shouldn’t be together.
Surprising mystery in the book as well which I was not expecting! I would highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance lovers.

Books allow you to escape, to learn and to live fearlessly. Maggie Banks is a heroine. She stands up to ancient ideals and champions books for all. I absolutely LOVED this book and can't wait to read more from Ms. Robinson. Diverse books matter. #StopBookBans
I love small town stories and I love any book featuring books in any way, this was a perfect read for me. Maggie was such an easy character to love as well as relatable.
Thank you #netgalley for an early read of #thebannedbookshopofmaggiebanks
Maggie has come to Bell River to help run her friend’s bookstore. She’s not much of a reader, and has no interest in the books the bookstore sells -- only literature from the time of the town’s famous author, so nothing after 1968. But the store is struggling, and Maggie has some creative ideas to help it succeed, starting with selling modern books that she hides in the back room. This is a fun rom-com with a little mystery and a lot of books.
4/5 stars
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers, and Shauna Robinson for allowing me to read and review this book.
This was such a cute and amazing read. The characters are fantastically written and easy to love. The story is amazing and so inspiring. You get to follow the journey of someone who does not like reading turn into someone who loves reading and recommends books to friends.
This is a lighthearted and fun book to read for any occasion. I would definitely recommend, especially to anyone who loves books about how community and books can bring people together.

The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks by Shauna Robinson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
.
I loved this book so much. The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks was my second Shauna Robinson book, and I think I liked it even more than the first. Her writing style is light and easy and her books draw me in quickly. I love love love that they are about book lovers and the book world.
.
This book centered around a bookstore in a town that was dedicated to upholding the legacy of famous author Edward Bell. The bookstore is only allowed to sell books published before his birth and no one but tourists are interested in these old "classics" written by dead white men. When Maggie comes to town to help her friend run the bookstore, her secret stash of modern books, her secret book club, and her secret mash-up book events turn this town upside down. These events sounded SO fun and I wished so much that I could attend one. lol.
.
Anyway, this story is about questioning the status quo, found family, community, and more, and it had all the cozy feels that I love in a book. I would definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for an easy but meaningful read.
Loved the bookshop setting and the underground book events. Maggie is on a self-discovery in a small town where she gets creative in helping out her old and new friends bypass the town rules. A cute romance also takes place. Be prepared to laugh out loud at some of the town rules.
5 beaming stars!!
I loved this book! A romance set in a book store? More please!
Diverse cast of characters. A quick-moving plot that feels warm and cozy and bookish. An enemies-to-lovers trope with a happily ever after?? Yes to all!
I already bought myself a personal copy, and now I want to see this adapted into a movie.
