And I thought
I typically don't really research a new author until I write my review.
I couldn't help but wonder about Eileen Brady. I was thinking she had some excellent help and did a bunch of research because as I read I felt like I was really in a Dog hospital.
The emergency scenes, the typical day appointments at the clinic were spot on.
I really enjoyed reading this book.
The mystery was entertaining and a bit twisty and turning taking the reader on a bit of a wild ride.
When an author includes a sub plot or another story or mystery woven into the main plot speaks volumes to me and I realize just how well written the book is. In this cc asr the mysterious hurt Pit Bull that shows up wrapped in a blanket by the clinic dumpster.
Eventually his mystery is solved and he is reunited with his family.
And through lots of interviews and and digging Dr. Kate manages to untangle the web of lies and deception and figure out who did it.
This one will be on my picks of the year. And I will be reading book 1 as soon as I get a chance.
Last But Not Leashed by Eileen Brady has restored my liking the cozy mystery genre. I liked the main character, Kate, and her staff. Kate is talked into going to a community event about organizing. After the presentation, Kate finds the organizer dead, and the story takes off from there.
The mystery was interesting, and I loved the addition of all the pets and the scenes in the vet office and animal hospital. I also liked that the main character didn't know everything and would look things up (i.e., Edwardian era fiction). I like that Kate was shown as a real person and not someone that has all the answers all the time and can sleuth out everything easily as other books do. She also didn't just jump into trying to solve the mystery, but she decided to take on the challenge of the murder victim's husband to try to find his missing money.
I would recommend Last But Not Leashed and give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Good one! The characters are a bit different than the norm and the family and friends are fun. The mystery is an odd one and a quick read
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
Loved everything about this super fun cozy! Animals, a vet clinic and characters that are likeable make this book enjoyable. A well written solid mystery. Lots of plot twists. I highly enjoyed! Thanks #netgalley and #PoisonedPenPress for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
Kate is the short term veterinarian covering while the town's usual vet is on a cruise. She enjoys treating the variety of animals that her clients bring in. She is lucky as she has a great assistant names Mari.
After a vet visit she is told that a murder has occurred. The victim has a rather obnoxious partner and people automatically think that he is the killer.
Having worked on his cat, Kate is certain that he is not the killer. She and Mari set out to find the real killer. There is a bit of romance thrown in as Kate has a long distance boyfriend.
The book has very realistic scenes about caring for a variety of animals (and lizards.) They are delightful as is the book itself.
Fun mystery I love that Dr Kate is always busy. She loves her fur patients and can’t help jumping in to a mystery. Two murders and the police are focused on the wrong suspect in Dr Kate’s opinion. She jumps in to solve the crimes.

I'm not a vet but have friends who work in that field and imagine they'd be happy to vouch for the "life of a vet" scenes depicted. I'm sure they'd just as rather have no experience with murder, however. Dr. Kate is dealing with a lot as the book opens. It's almost New Year's Eve and her long distance boyfriend is feeling just as emotionally distant as he is in reality. Than she finds a body in a parking lot after a presentation by a professional home organizer. To add to the dark clouds seemingly surrounding her, a body falls from the rafters at a New Year's Eve bash. Luke, the boyfriend did make it there for that but, as a former cop, his professional mode kicks in and she rides home with a friend. All is not lost, however, as she met a charmingly handsome man at the bash, Colin. Hmm, new romance?
I found myself liking Kate a great deal. Her friends and co-workers at the vet clinic are fun, smart, and seemingly in touch with all the gossip, good and bad, in the community. They even know how to talk humans down when near passing out, such as the sight of blood leaves one client. Handy skill for a cozy mystery, I'd say. Nor does Kate show the usual tendency of other series mysteries to go looking for trouble. Rather nice to see a smart amateur sleuth who doesn't deliberately or stupidly but themselves in harm's way. It just finds her.
Did I mention the dogs? Kate's King Charles spaniel, Buddy, welcomes not just one but two fellow canines in this installment, the badly injured pit they dub Mr. Pitt, dumped at the clinic, and Desi, the attack trained dog she "borrows", not to mention temporary visitor, cranky, usually nasty to deal with Little Man, a chihuahua described as having the heart of a lion but the body of a mouse. How can you not love them all?
As for the murder, who killed professional organizer Sookie? Her husband sounds like a likely suspect. Seemingly desperate for money, he showed violent tendencies in public. Was unlucky Lucky somehow involved? He did seem to have a way of stumbling into trouble. Or, maybe Posey? Will her book be a bestseller? What will happen to the book she was writing? What about Rainbow? She gives airheads a bad name but seems intellectually brilliant, at least? Could the dazzling movie star living on the hillside have played a role? Will Kate's love life improve? Will they find Mr. Pitt's humans?
Why....oh, never mind. Enough teasers. Read the book. If you like dogs and interesting mysteries with a multi-layered plot, you'll enjoy this one.
Thanks #NetGalley and #PoisonedPenPress for introducing me to Dr. Kate, a vet all animal lovers can love. That said, my vet is ex-military and not sure they'd make as good a sleuth as Kate.
What a great murder mystery book! I enjoyed the plot and the characters. Such a fun cozy mystery story that had me guessing until the end!
I received an ARC of, Last But Not Leashed, by Eileen Brady. Veterinarian Dr. Kate, has animals to care for and murders to solve. Can she solve the murders, before anyone else is murdered?

Dr. Kate finds the first body in the now empty parking lot after attending a decluttering seminar with her friends from work. And the sleuthing begins. The next one comes crashing down at a party in a barn venue, and it is the woman who works at the convenience store and also part-time for the first victim. But this was ruled a suicide. The clues to each are iffy and then there is the husband of the first who offers a reward to whoever can trace money that has gone missing. Lots of interesting character, both human and not. Great whodunit with side orders of veterinary lore, romantic asides, and witty humor. Loved it!
I requested and received a free e-book copy from Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley. Thank you!
Now I want to read the first in series.
A Reluctant Role…
The second in the Dr Kate Vet Mystery series finds the New Year approaching and Kate desperate to put her own life in some semblance of order. She’d also prefer to stop finding dead bodies but that’s one pending resolution that needs to be shelved for now as she, once again, finds herself in the reluctant role of amateur sleuth. With a well crafted cast of characters and a pacy narrative laced with humour this is an enjoyable and entertaining cosy mystery and a worthy addition to the first in the series.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Poisoned Pen Press and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Another hit in this cozy mystery series. The mystery is well written, a twist you might not see coming.
I enjoyed this book. I loved all the animals. The characters are great. The story is interesting, I was surprised by who the killer was. #LastButNotLeashed #NetGalley
Dr. Kate Turner is a short-term veterinarian in the small town of Oak Falls, New York until the regular veterinarian finishes his world cruise. After leaving her job in Long Island, she has made friends here, but she and her man friend, Luke are perhaps at a turning point while he is away at law school. Her vet tech, Mari invites her to come to a lecture at the community center by a home organizer guru, Sookie Overmann whose marriage is reputed to be in a mess. Kate is the last to leave the building and discovers Sookie's dead body. Kate's receptionist, Cindy is the sister-in-law of the chief of police and feeds the other two bits of information as the three become involved when another death occurs. Kate meets a visiting artist and Lukes's cousin and there are other suspicious people that keep the reader guessing. The author creates a New Year's season wintery landscape and there is some humor in the story too. Kate's patients including Sookie's cat, a rescued fighting dog, she names Mr. Pitt, and a brave chihuahua are charming. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
