The art for this is GORGEOUS and the mystery is quite fun. An awesome alternative for those looking to break away from the boy wizard series into something more inclusive.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book, as this book has already been published, I will not share my review on Netgalley at this time.
A Massive Thank You to the Author, the Publisher and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this book prior to its release date.
First things first, the illustrations were amazing! That's what drew me in, the story is the reason I stayed. I really enjoyed the plot and the academy where all the young witches are trained. The quest set by the MC to find her friend really kept me hooked. I hope there are more stories set in this world.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me access to this title!

This was a cute, fun graphic novel. The art was beautiful and was very vibrant. I thought the settings in the images were done really well. The story was a fun read, but nothing really stood out as super unique. It felt extremely similar to most other witchy stories. However if you are looking for something cozy and slightly spooky for fall or Halloween, this is a nice quick read.
I love a good magic school, and this was a fun rendition of one, full of witchcraft and intrigue. When a girl goes missing at Younwitty, history seems to be repeating itself. Decades ago, a girl disappeared into the forest around the school and rumors of ghosts and demons have haunted the school ever since. Now, Abigail's mentee has disappeared into the woods and nobody seems to be taking it seriously. But as she breaks school rules to search for her friend, sinister secrets begin to reveal themselves.
I enjoyed this graphic novel which gave me all the good, witchy school vibes I could even want. The story and writing felt a bit juvenile at times--and not just because it's targeted at a young adult audience--but it all came together well enough and I liked the story in spite of all that.
Over My Dead Body is an intriguing YA graphic novel full of mystery, witchery, and adventure.
Abby attends Younwity, a magical boarding school surrounding by eerie woods home to an old, terrifying monster. The novel opens with the disappearance of Noreen, Abby's foster sister-- Abby wants to search for Noreen right away and find out why she wandered into the woods, but the school's staff promises to take care of it... except they don't. Quickly it seems like everyone except for Abby and her friends has given up on searching for Noreen. As Abby tries to find out what happened to Noreen and why she entered into the woods, she stumbles upon a startling discovery... Noreen isn't the first girl to go missing at Younwity. And whatever was in the woods all those years ago might still be out there...
At the center of the book is a fast-paced, intriguing mystery that compels you to read on to find out how the past and present disappearances align. I loved figuring out the mysterious, magical plot, but I felt like a lot of things about the book fell flat. Many character relationships didn't seem fully developed, and several plot lines involving secondary characters kind of dropped off at the end. It was a fun read, especially during the Halloween season, but it wasn't a work of literary genius. Read this if you want to lose yourself in a magical graphic novel for an afternoon.
A cute book, but the overuse across genres of supernatural schools as a setting has gotten to the point of getting in the way. This book probably has its audience, but it isn't me. Other than that, seeing the friendships of the characters evolve is refreshing, and there are some pretty good twists. The art is also beautifully rendered.
I really loved this graphic novel. The story was so much fun and everything I want in a witch story. The art was beautiful and I loved the composition and characters. I would recommend it to my students and others would are interested in dark acadamia fiction or even readers of the Sookie Stackhouse series.
I don't read a ton of graphic novels because they tend to be too short and over dramatic for me, but I really enjoyed this. It is like twilight, skam and gossip girl came together,,,with a little murder mystery on the side hehe.
I was under the impression that this was a fiction book not a graphic novel which was my mistake as I do not read graphic novels. However, I did give this one a try and I found it very creative and interesting! Abby is searching for her sister Noreen and starts to see ties to another girl who went missing previously. There is more questions than answers and her quest sends her to the off limits woods.. you wonder what will she find? Good book for those who like graphic novels and who veer towards mystery mixed with paranormal.
Over My Dead Body is a fantastic graphic novel about students at a witch academy. There are many fantastical and thrilling elements to this tale, but the over all message of finding your true family and friends is what really shines. Highly recommended for all YA graphic novel collections.
Over My Dead Body by Sweeney Boo - 4 stars
This was definitely a book was the cover grabbed my attention, but it was nothing like the story iI had imagined it would be. Over My Dead Body is a story about a Witch Academy that is kept in secret. When an entity within the Academy walls proves to be dangerous to those attending the school and students start to go missing, Abigail starts to investigate.
Great story line kept me invested all the way through. The graphic illustrations were amazing and were filled with tons of details.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Book for the ARC.
i really loved the artwork in this graphic novel, it was a perfect read during the spooky months of fall. really enjoyed this one!
A good graphic novel for teens. Fell a little flat for me, but a solid story and good graphics. The friend dynamics were interesting to follow through the story.
Over My Dead Body is an interesting graphic novel about witches. The story is intriguing with great art work. It is perfect for spooky season!

A great mix of witchy magic and mystery! This is a great addition for those that love witches and graphic novels.
This book was nothing like I was expecting based solely on the cover. This book is about a witch academy that’s hidden from society Yorrwitch. Yorrwitch Academy is surrounded by woods with some nefarious entity inside that is dangerous to the people who inhabit the school. Our main character, Abigail is an orphan student. Her only family is the family, she makes at school. One day when her mentee Noreen goes missing, she can’t help but get in on the search. She’s not supposed to searching as it is only for teachers, but she knows there’s no one else there for an orphan. And the school has a history of another student that went missing and was never found. This book has an interesting flow, and I did find the book wrapped up too quickly and too nicely. I did enjoy the twist at the end, but it seemed rushed compared to how drawn out the first 3/4 of the book felt. Overall, this was a fun and timely read for the season and I did enjoy it. if there’s a sequel, I would be interesting to read it, but it would not be a must buy.
Thank you to @netgalley and @HarperAlley for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, this artwork is absolutely gorgeous. Second, this is exactly what I needed for a quick Halloween pick me up. The story was fast paced, but in a good, I can’t put this down I need to know what’s going to happen kind of way. And honestly, I couldn’t put it down, I binged this in one sitting. It gave me anxiety, I was nervous, I had so many trust issues, and I loved the familiars (especially Seymour and his anxiety 😂). Plus, it had magic, what more could I ask for? I really enjoyed this one, especially for the spooky season!
