Growing up, I loved Poirot and this book gave me vibes of Poirot himself, but with a strong female lead character! "Cath your Death" is about Detective Lauren Riley and her partner Reese. While out, they encounter one of Reese's old high school friends who is opening a stunning luxury hotel. He invites Lauren and Reese to join him and other guests for a weekend at the resort. The rest of the guest list just happens to include every suspect from the death of a fellow classmate of theirs named Jessica. To Lauren's surprise, even Reese was a suspect years ago! After an argument on the weekend getaway, someone ends up murdered! Fear not, Detective Lauren Riley is on the case, and she will solve it!
The author does a great job keeping you engaged throughout this story, and her understanding of crime scenes was impressive. It felt very realistic, and I loved trying to guess who the murderer was one page at a time. I was also appreciative the story didn't jump from time to time, and character to character, as so many mysteries do lately. It was a straightforward, very enjoyable read! Thank you to Severn House and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
In this sixth installment of the Cold Case Investigation series, Lauren Riley and her partner Shane Reece find themselves at a luxury hotel with a group of Reece’s former classmates during a winter storm. Each of the classmates was a suspect in an unsolved murder of a high school peer. One of the guests, who hosts a true crime podcast, threatens to reveal the murderer in an upcoming episode.
The book started off a bit slow for me, but picked up once a new crime was committed. I liked the locked room aspect of the story, as the guests become snowed in. Reece’s connection to the earlier murder and the fact that he’s been working the case in secret create conflict for Riley. She believes his innocence, but must treat him as a suspect and work the case without him so that any evidence she gathers is admissible.
Riley partners up with State Police BCI Investigator Kevin Donovan remotely sharing evidence and communicating via phone and FaceTime due to the hazardous weather conditions. The biggest leap for me is the hotel owner’s insistence that Riley join the gathering. I wish that her presence at the hotel had come about more organically. I did, however, enjoy the way Riley and Donovan worked together. She engaged in some less than by-the-book tactics, which worked because of the physical distance between them and that her unorthodox methods succeeded in producing viable evidence.
The luxury hotel setting was well described, making picturing the facility and imagining the characters moving from place to place easy. Riley’s injuries from earlier cases were nicely incorporated into the story as was her complicated relationship with Reece. Having her gather clues and see her thought process in determining the murderer’s identity made the story a good read. The story begins with the interrogation of a former mob moll, which is recalled at the end to provide resonance.
I plan on keeping an eye out for the next installment.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks to Severn House, an imprint of Canongate Books, for providing an Advance Reader Copy via NetGalley.
Catch Your Death is the latest in the Cold Case Investigation series. Reese has a personal connection to the cold case involving the death of a friend in high school. Perhaps because I was hesitant about finding out Reese's involvement, but the beginning of the story was slower than usual for me. The author includes the cold case interviews for us to read as Riley brings herself up to speed on the case. She finds herself invited to the opening of a spa with Reese and his friends who were initially interviewed about the death of their friend. Assemble these people in a secluded luxurious spa setting, add a blizzard, ramp up the guilt and paranoia, and the story escalates into a race against the clock/snow to solve old and new crimes. Excellent library choice for readers interested in mysteries/detective novels. Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and Lissa Marie Redmond for the ARC.
Another winner in the Cold Case Investigation series.
The pace was a bit slow to begin with but soon found traction.
Riley and her partner continue to work well together,at work and home. It is an unconventional team effort but it works for them.
This story involves people from Reese's past who are brought together to congratualte and break in a new upscale hotel and spa that one of the friend's are soon to launch. Riley is invited along for the "fun" weekend when of course all hell breaks loose.
Secrets from the past are exposed which in turn help solve the current investigation. Great twist at the end that I did not expect, until the detectives explain their theories and solidify who the culprit is.
Wow, what a great read, devoured it in one sitting, thoroughly enjoyed it. It can be read as a standalone, but yould be missing out on some great reads if you don't go back and read the others in this series, I know I am going to do just that.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this brilliant book
well who doesnt like a story about snow and a luxury spa.....
when lauren and shane are invited for a weekend to a luxury spa with shanes best friends from school....it should be a great re-union, but it ends up with a murder
and with the blizzard keeping everyone on their toes reinforcements are not yet on their way to help investigate so its down to lauren to control the scene and with everyone having a motive it isnt easy with egos flying around and not being able to trust her fellow colleague shane her cold case partner
but as tempers fray can lauren piece together the clues before anyone else gets hurt
ohhh an atmospheric themed book...loved it....as long as i was trapped with my mates and not somebody elses otherwise this would be a nightmare...
cant get enough of this series
This is such a fabulous series! I live outside of Buffalo, and really enjoy reading locally-set stories - and there aren't all that many...
I love watching Riley's character develop, and her relationship with Reese - both interpersonally and professionally - is a big part of that for me. As always, the characters were a huge part of what I enjoyed most about the book. Redmond has a knack for presenting characters who are eminently relatable - for good and for ill - and genuine in their actions and reactions. It makes them very easy to connect with and their stories resonate more strongly as a result.
I also loved the concept of a locked room mystery set in a snowstorm, and enjoyed reading her afterword explaining the construct. It's a favorite genre of mine also, and this contemporary spin on it really worked well here.
Tying the past and present murders in worked really well here also. I like that Redmond didn't try to run disk timelines but focused instead on presenting the past through the lens of the case notes and interviews. It kept the cold case feel whole also bringing the past and present together.
I really loved the way this one ended and cannot wait to see what comes next for the dynamic duo!
Catch Your Death by Lissa Marie Redmond is the 6th book in her Cold Case series. Cold case Detectives Lauren Riley and her partner Shane Reese work in the Cold Case department for the Buffalo, NY Police. Shane works on one case periodically involving the unsolved murder of his high school classmate, Jessica Toakase. Jessica was brutally murdered after leaving her summer job at the local park’s concession stand. Shane was part of a group of close friends that immediately became suspects in the murder. However, the murder is never solved.
Now seventeen years later, this group of friends is having a reunion at a luxury spa outside of Buffalo; Everyone attending was considered a close friend of the victim. An intense snow storm hits the area at night, resulting in closed roads. However, a murder happens at night, and everyone is a suspect. If Lauren and Shane can solve this new murder, will it result in solving the murder of Jessica?
I have read all the books in this series and the author always keeps me guessing until the very end. Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC.
Catch Your Death by Lissa Marie Redmond was definitely an atmospheric mystery. The descriptions were done well, and you could feel right in the middle of the action.
The story felt a bit predictable once Shane ran into an old school friend who invited him and Lauren to his new spa, and you kind of could predict what would happen as the story unfolded.
The reason for the original murder is a trope that has been done before, but it was believable as people do crazy things to keep their status and for money.
Overall, it was an engaging read, and I will check out more from this author. This was a 3.5 out of 5 stars for me.

This was a great mystery read. It grabbed me from the start and kept me guessing till the end. I would highly recommend this book. Loved the characters of Lauren and Reese.
There's nothing worse than being able to figure out the ending of a thriller, and this one kept me guessing. A wonderful and incredibly rich novel . . . Powerful writing and a wonderful premise make this a novel you’ll simultaneously want to savour and race through.
Lots of twists and turns, lots of intriguing suspense. Part of a series but reads ok as a stand alone. Love a cold case mystery. Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy.
This is a book of mystery and intrigue. This book was sent to me by Netgalley for review. The characters are not lovable but it is a mystery not a romance. This author is talented at weaving a story that is difficult to put down. That being said, it does move slowly at times. Enjoy this one.
Sometimes you've just got to weigh the bad with the good.......
I first came upon this series by Lissa Marie Redmond with the fifth edition, The Parting Glass. That one is set in Ireland and I was introduced to the unusual partnering of Buffalo Police Cold Case detectives, Lauren Riley and Shane Reese. This duo was a combo of opposites, but they worked together in a well-structured harmony. The Irish setting just ratcheted up the enjoyment. And the writing was so on-point and creative.
Enter: Catch Your Death #6. It started out well with a Cold Case that even involved Shane Reese from seventeen years ago. Shane was in high school and was interrogated upon the death of a fellow class member, Jessica Toakase. Jessica was murdered after leaving her job at a concession stand near the baseball field where Shane played. The murderer was never found. Shane continued to work on the case after becoming a police officer with no inroads thereafter. Storyline: So far, so good.
But then the story became more and more contrived. Shane and Lauren meet up with a former classmate of Shane's who invites them both to the pre-opening of his upscale spa near the ski resort of Inverness, New York. The little band of friends of the murdered Jessica will all be there with the just-so-happened addition of Detective Lauren Riley. The wine and the booze flow with arguments and fisticuffs to follow. One of them will end up dead. This was Agatha Christie on steroids. Put 'em all together and watch for the chaos. And send in a monster snowstorm that blocks the highways and impedes escape.
Catch Your Death will be enjoyed by many. It still has glimpses of the good techniques in writing by Lissa Marie Redmond that were more evident in The Parting Glass. But I felt it was just too forced with all the coincidences and the manipulated storyline. It's evident that Redmond put a lot of work into this one with her emphasis on police procedures. Nowadays, it's more and more difficult to come up with new and exciting storylines. And authors feel compelled to deliver a bucket full of twisties. Ol' Agatha was a master of just straightforward, intriguing storylines based on the loose strings of human nature. A twisty was not always in a Christie.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Severn House and to Lissa Marie Redmond for the opportunity.
A really intriguing and suspenseful read that was twisty and unpredictable. I was gripped right from the start and cannot wait to read more by this author.
In this new Cold Case Files book, Lauren is back at work after being the victim of violence, and she is still struggling with lung damage. This time, the cold case involves her partner, Shane Reese, and part of his past. When Shane is invited to a small class reunion at his friend's new spa & resort, Lauren is also invited to be a part of the resort's pre-opening. The invitation provides the opportunity for her to learn about an unsolved murder from Shane's high school class. When a blizzard traps the alums, their partners, and two members of the staff in the resort, things heat up. With the threat of uncovering who really killed their classmate, another murder occurs, and Lauren must find the killer and keep everyone safe. It's a great mystery, and we also get to see the relationship between Shane and Lauren take a new turn.
This is a new author for me, and although it is part of a series, it reads quite well as a standalone. The two main characters, Shane Reece and Lauren Riley are partners in the cold case department of the Buffalo, New York police department. They are also housemates, however, not in a romantic relationship. Seventeen years earlier, when Shane had just graduated high school, one of his classmates was brutally murdered, the case was still unsolved. Now, all these years later, a reunion of sorts is organized amongst the closest friends of the victim, Jessica Toakase. The reunion is held at a luxury spa in a remote location. Talk of Jessica brings tensions and that coupled with unlimited alcohol leads to some heated arguments. Everyone goes off to bed and in the morning discover they are completely snowed in. More importantly, one of the classmates is discovered brutally murdered in her room. Lots of tension, lack of trust, one of the eleven people here is a double murderer. I enjoyed the homage to Agatha Christie when the detectives have all the suspects gathered and they reveal the murderer.
I thought the book was a bit slow to start and in my opinion didn’t grab my attention until the third chapter. Once I got into it though, I found the book hard to put down and I definitely did not figure out who the killer was. The plotting and the motive were very clever.
Thank you to netgalley and Severn House for this advance copy. I do recommend this book.
Snippy Narrative..
The sixth in the Cold Case Investigation series and a school reunion brings back memories of an unsolved murder from seventeen years earlier. A luxury hotel and spa beckons for the detectives. It sounds like a perfect getaway. When a snowstorm gathers, tensions rise and another murder occurs. Is it connected to the cold case murder and which of the plethora of suspects is guilty? Could it even be one of the cold detectives themselves? With a keen eye for observation, a snippy narrative and an intriguing mystery at its heart this is an immersive and entertaining read and a very worthy addition to the enjoyable series.

Cold Case Detective Lauren Riley and her partner, Detective Shane Reese are looking into a seventeen-year old cold case. It is the murder of Jessica Toakese who was stabbed and left in a river by a local baseball park. Reese was a high school classmate of Jessica’s and was questioned in her death.
When Reese runs into an old classmate, he, along with Lauren, are invited to a class reunion. there are the other suspects in Jessica’s murder. His friend Chris was in the same class as Reese and Jessica and now owns an exclusive resort in upper New York.
When Reese and Lauren arrive, it is beginning to snow. The weather soon turns into a blinding snowstorm.
All of the guests are former classmates of Jessica’s. There are a variety of people attending the reunion, from an up and coming podcaster to a software mogul. The podcaster goes off the handle and claims they are going to announce the name of Jessica’s murderer on their show very soon.
Lauren and Reese now have another murder on their hands. Reese cannot help Lauren as he is too close to the case and he was an original suspect. He is relegated to crowd control.
With the state police tied up with the terrible snow storm, Lauren is left to investigate the crime on her own. When another person is badly injured by a bash to the head, the intensity is ratcheted up.
The identity of the murderer was one of the most forgettable characters in the story. I hadn’t even considered them.
This well written and plotted novel is typical of Ms. Redmond. Her stories are always inventive page-turners. I enjoy her characterizations. Lauren and Reese are likable and made a good team.
I will continue to read Ms. Redmond’s books.
I want to thank NetGalley and Severn House for forwarding this very good book to me to read, enjoy and review.
