Book review // The Enemy by Sarah Adams
5/5 🌟
This book is pure gold!! The Enemy follows the story of June and Ryan, sworn enemies during their high school days who meet again when Ryan is in town for their friends’ wedding!
Quick thoughts:
LIKES - Sarah Adams’s writing is like none other in my opinion… always a perfect story line and the banter between the characters is so clever and funny! This book was no exception!! I loved the push and pull between June and Ryan and they were so like-able and relatable! The book grabbed me from the very first line and I was hooked for the whole rest of the story!
DISLIKES - Absolutely nothing!
Read if you like:
*enemies to lovers
*second chances
*dual POV
*the sweetest bestie relationship
*a laugh out loud romcom
*the most swoon-worth book boyfriend
*a great epilogue to wrap up the book
your standard formulaic contemp. romance. it was good but nothing special. the characters were pretty likable and it was an easy read. good to listen to while multitasking.
Loved this book. I listened to it in one sitting and then wished I had taken it slower to enjoy it more. The narrator did a great job.
Book 2 in the "It Happened in Charleston" series, but completely works as a stand alone.
June and Ryan have been at war since they were 14. Thrown together again at 30, they pick up where they left off. Except, they never actually hated each other. Ryan wants June, but June has put up walls. She never goes on more than one date with someone. Ryan creatively works around that rule to keep spending time with June.
June was very immature, IMO, which made parts annoying to get through. Ryan makes up for her shortcomings. Overall, a cute, quick read.
I listened to the audio book. Pretty standard. I enjoyed Ryan's chapters (narrated by Lee Samuels) better, but that may have been because June annoyed me a lot.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this sweet and funny audiobook from Sarah Adams and dreamscape media! June and Ryan were the perfect match. Reading about their hate to love relationship was such a treat.
I read this last year, and to get to listen to it was just as much of a treat. The narrators did a great job here. I was entertained and kept engaged as I did the mundane things around my house. Sarah does a great job with the writing and the audio was just a cherry on top of that great story.
Rating 4 stars
It has been 12 years since June and Ryan have seen one another, until it is time for their best friends wedding week. June had all intentions to shove her successes down his throat but when she sees him and learns how successful he is things change. She doesn’t want to like him but the more time she spends with him -seems as though she doesn’t have a choice. What she doesn’t know, is that Ryan has loved her since the beginning.
This romcom was perfection in all ways. The story had me grinning and laughing out loud throughout the entire book. The narrators did a fantastic job telling the story and it has definitely made me want to read other stories from this author.
*Special thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape media for providing this audio arc in return for an honest review*
This book was 4 stars for me. It’s a nice sappy love story, with some miscommunication thrown in. The ending was good, very sweet.
I liked Ryan and that you got to hear his perspective as well as June’s.
Thank you Dreamscape Media for the early release copy!
Thank you to the publishers for a copy of the audiobook.
Cute story.
The hero and heroine did not like each other in high school because each perceives that the other doesn't like them.
The heroine's best friend is getting married and the hero is in the wedding party.
The hero tries to win the heroine over but is still healing over past hurts.
The narrators were a good edition to the story. I really like when a man reads the part of the hero and a woman the part of the heroine-it adds to the story and the emotions surrounding it.
Overall, cute
I absolutely love The Enemy by Sarah Adams. It's easily one of my favorites of her books. When I saw the audio was available through NetGalley, I knew I needed to reread it this way. This audio production is delightful. The narrators' performances fit June and Ryan's characters so well, really bringing the story to life. This story is fun, flirty, romantic, and full of all the best things readers want in a romantic comedy.
Thanks to NetGalley for the alc of this book. All opinions here are my own.
I’m fairly new to Sarah Adams’s work, having just read The Cheat Sheet earlier this year (which I loved!). I was so excited to get an ALC of The Enemy. Even though it’s the second book in a series, you do not need to read/listen to The Match to appreciate this book.
This book follows childhood “nemesis” June and Ryan who pranked their way through high school together, as they’re reunited at their best friends’ wedding. June has gone on to start a successful bakery in Charleston. Ryan bolted after high school graduation and became a 3-time Michelin Star chef in Chicago. June picks right back up where they left off all those years ago, antagonizing Ryan at the shared bachelor-bachelorette party. But as the wedding festivities continue, it becomes clear to both of them that by lowering their swords (and their walls), the truth about their feelings is undeniable.
Lee Samuels & Connie Shabshab were great narrators, even though I felt that Connie’s voice and portrayal felt more like someone in their early 20’s than in their early 30’s. I still found the ALC to be very enjoyable, and Sarah Adams is quickly becoming one of my favorite closed-door romance authors.
Thank you to Dreamscape Media & NetGalley for the ALC.
Loved it! So far everything Sarah Adams written is gold. I loved this book and I don’t even enjoy contemporary romance. I read the whole book in a few hours and now my poor kids get hot dogs for dinner! It was a sizzling romance but still clean. I was sad to have the book end.
I was able to listen to the audio version of this book and WOW! It was so good. I loved how they switched from a male narrator and female narrator based on whose side of the story was being told. It was such a fun way to “read” this book. I would highly recommend it! (Full disclosure- I do listen to the audio at a higher speed than the default speed).
Thank you all for this gifted copy of The Enemy by Sarah Adams.
As always, I adored this book by Sarah Adams and this audio version by Dreamscape Media. Dreamscape does a wonderful job on their audiobooks; I love the readers and how they bring the characters to life.
This was a wonderful story, with humor and love. I always appreciate that Sarah’s books give you the good feels and are relatively clean! Would read/listen again and recommend to friends.

Oh boy, this one was a doozy for me. There were several issues I had with this story, but the main one was that I ultimately just did not buy into the premise. Two people who were “enemies” in high school meet up again at a friend’s wedding and discover that *gasp* they actually were in love with each other the whole time. I miiiight have bought into this if the couple were in their early twenties, but the fact that these people are in their 30s and still so oblivious to their own feelings, let alone each other’s, was just not believable to me. The other main issue that I had while reading is that June, our FMC, is just sooo incredibly unlikable… she’s whiny and immature and being inside her brain during her POV chapters was just cringe-worthy. Meanwhile, Ryan, our MMC, is a highly successful chef with a solid head on his shoulders; his only flaw, really, is that he’s hopelessly in love with a grown woman who still thinks like a middle schooler. Well, that, and the fact that he keeps breaking into her house (?) and this is somehow seen as cute and romantic? Several problematic scenes in this one, but really, just overall more cringe than cute. There were some parts that I thought were sweet, but overall, this was just not for me.

I adore this book. June and Ryan are one of my favorite fictional couples of all time! This audiobook was great.
What a delightful rom-com!
It has all the elements of a cliché romantic comedy but still refreshing to listen to! I enjoyed every minute of it and even went back to some of my favorite scenes after I was done! This was the first time I have listened to a book by Sarah Adam’s but it definitely won’t be the last- I already started on ‘The Cheat Sheet’ today!
This was a tough book for me to get through. The audio was very whiny. The characters were frustrating and not relatable.
I would have wanted a refund if i bought it.
The Enemy is my second book from Sarah Adams. The first was The Cheat Sheet, which I LOVED. I grabbed the audio of The Enemy from Netgalley in hopes that I would love this one as much. Although I didn’t LOVE this one as much as The Cheat Sheet, it was still a great book. I would recommend it to someone looking for a lighthearted, no spice book. I did listen to this on audio and I found the female narrator slightly annoying after really digging into the book (listened to a sample of the book and thought I’d be fine). The male narrator was good.
This book was amazing! I enjoyed every single chapter, and it kept me hooked the entire time, which I loved!
Sarah Adams follows up THE MATCH, her launch of the It Happened in Charleston rom-com series, with THE ENEMY.
The Enemy follows June and Ryan who’ve been at each other’s throats for years until June’s BFF and Ryan’s BFF decide to get married, forcing them to be in each other’s orbits after over a decade of avoiding one another.
It turns out though, Ryan had a massive crush on June when they were young and has never really gotten over her and now that they’re all grown up, he doesn’t want the opportunity to slip by him again. But can he convince June not only that he truly wants her, but that she should dump her one date rule established to protect her heart?
This is my first Sarah Adams book and I really wanted to know what all the hype was about. Ryan and June’s story was really cute and fun and I enjoyed listening to Connie Shabshab & Lee Samuels narration (although Connie’s guy voice was kind of funny).
The Enemy was a lighthearted rom-com with a charismatic, sweet, swoony and understanding hero and wacky heroine. Yes, I loved Ryan. He couldn’t have been more charming, but I did have some trouble with June. I’m sure her character’s over the top-ness was meant to be funny, but it got to the point where her behavior was too childish. She was holding a silly grudge for over a decade, being petty and couldn’t see that good that was right in front of her.
Overall though, the story was light and adorable. I will be reading THE MATCH ASAP.
