Wonderful traditional art pastel artwork pages portraiting the life of Nancy Pearl an icon and beloved librarian.
The passion of a child for books helped her conquer her fears and build a community. Kids used to laugh at her for loving books and reading but she found a place where she could belong and later be respected for her passion by sharing it with others. It transported me back to those years when I found myself in an aisle surrounded by amazing stories about other worlds and time just passed without notice.
All book lovers will love to collect this story.
This book tells a really sweet story of a little girl who loves to read. At school, Nancy is often made fun of for her love of reading. She finds a safe space in her school library where she can enjoy books with the librarian. When she is introduced to the public library her world opens up so much more, but she still worries about being teased or bullied in this new space. Once Nancy learns that libraries are a safe space for those who love to read she begins to feel welcomed into a book-loving community.
As a grade 3 teacher I think this would be a fabulous book for teaching about libraries and their purpose in a community. I would also share this book with my students when discussing how there are many different types of books, and also many different hobbies and that we shouldn't tease someone for liking something that is different than what we personally are interested in. I would highly recommend this book to families and teachers of children in the 5-10 age range.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this great book!
As a retired librarian and fan of Nancy Pearl, I loved this charming picture book. I predict this will be purchased for many library collections and appeal to young patrons. The illustrations and the text are equally excellent.
I adored this sweet children’s book about Nancy Pearl. While my grandmother did not become a librarian, she too found magic and solace in the library as a young girl. She was the youngest child of immigrants and spent much of her free time in the library devouring books. She passed that love along to her children and grandchildren, including doing long-distance grandma book clubs with us growing up. So many of my favorite books were introductions from my grandmother, and I see her spirit reflected so vividly in this story too.
Nancy is a solitary child. No children want to be her friend. The reason ? Nancy loves books. She spends every spared time at the School Library, devouring new stories. As she regrets not being able to come to school on Saturday to read more books, Miss Glen, the Librarian, tells the little girl about the Public Library. A brand new world opens to Nancy, but still a fear remains : will the children pick on her ?
Inspired by the life of Nancy Pearl, a renowned American Librarian, Library Girl is a declaration of love to Books, Libraries and Librarians. Through books, young Nancy travels to amazing countries and lives extraordinary stories. Books are her best friends when other children do not understand her and reject her. But it is also through them that the little girl will find courage, share what she learnt and find her path.
Sheryl Murray’s illustrations are colorful and beautiful. I love how she created ghostly creatures and sceneries to represent the stories inside the books. It is really poetic.
Library Girl : How Nancy Pearl Became America's Most Celebrated Librarian is really an amazing book : many book lovers will be inspired by the story and some may surely recognize themselves in Nancy’s misadventures.
Library Girl is an enchanting tale of sweet, book-loving Nancy who is often teased at school for loving the library so much. When she visits her local public library, she meets a librarian who helps her to realize her true potential while fostering her love for books. This book is PERFECT for a K-5 classroom lesson or a library lesson, even for moms to read at home! I truly felt nostalgic for my own childhood, as someone who spent more time in the library than with peers my own age. So teachers, parents, and LIBRARIANS, this book is perfect for fostering a love for reading and books in children and showing them that the power of books can help them achieve great things!
Oh my goodness, I adored this book. This cute story introduces us to Nancy, a young girl who loves to read. Sadly, her friends at school made fun of her and jokingly called her "The Library Girl." She was ashamed of reading and kept it to herself until she discovers the library and meets many new people who share her love of books!
This story was so sweet and one I would definitely buy for my two year old when it comes out. What a great way to teach children that reading is fun and reading is cool!
On top of the great story and message, the illustrations were so bright and cheery! I loved seeing all of the things that Nancy imagined come to life in the beautiful pictures- every page was new and exciting!
