Her Frozen Cry (Detective Amanda Steele Book 5) by Carolyn Arnold is another great addition to the Amanda Steele series.
This certainly was a pulse-pounding crime thriller. There was definitely a fine line between doing your job and having to investigate an old friend. Her Frozen Cry did have a couple of loose ends that were not tied up. For example, what happened to Leo, and did Amanda and Tony talk later? What will happen to New Belle and did Amanda really steal the formula in college? I felt this was never fully explained.
The storyline was good, the plot good, but a sad outcome for the killer.
I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series. I would highly recommend reading this book and this series.

This is a solid procedural that kept me guessing. A beautiful cosmetics mogul is found dead. Lab results reveal a phenobarbital overdose. Detective Steele had a prior relationship with the woman's husband and must figure out if he played a part in her death. In addition to the mystery, I enjoyed the relationship with her partner Trent and the balanced look into Detective Steele's home life.
Detective Amanda Steele is back with another case!
Unlike her previous cases where she had to deal with a deranged serial killer, this was different. A devoted mother and businesswoman, Alicia Gordon was found dead in her cabin. While it looked like a suicide, later on it was found out that she was actually the wife of Tony, Amanda's high school friend and classmate and who had been very close to each other. With evidences mounting against Tony, Amanda is having mixed feelings whether her friend is guilty or not.
This was a fast paced thriller, packed with twists and turns along the way. The writing was really great, the plot was great too and the author has done a good job of drawing the reader into the story and making the reader feel like they are part of the story. I do like how Amanda and her partner Trent are working together as well. This felt like a roller coaster ride and the ending was so unexpected--I did not expect that ending.
This book will keep you up all night and will guarateed that it will keep you at the edge of the seat--worth five stars!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
I received a free electronic ARC of this excellent police procedural novel from NetGalley, author Carolyn Arnold, and publisher Bookouture. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read Her Frozen Cry of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am always pleased to recommend Carolyn Arnold to friends and family. She writes excellent who-dun-its, with personable protagonists and enough twists and turns in the story to keep us on our toes. I try to set aside enough time to finish the Arnold book I've last received as otherwise, I lose too much sleep.
Her Frozen Cry is the fifth of the Amanda Steele Series. The novel is completely stand-alone, but the series is rich with intrigue and emotion. We are back in with the Prince William County Police Department, riding with Amanda and Trent, homicide detectives who are faced with the sudden death of a fairly young, healthy woman. Alicia Gordon was a wife, mother, and CEO of New Belle, a very successful cosmetics company located in the county. Lab works tell them she was killed by poisoning, an overdose of Phenobarbital. Phenobarbital is the drug used by veterinarians to put ill or aging pets to sleep. It is occasionally prescribed for people in much smaller doses to combat depression. Where it was obtained and how it was administered are unknown, but her death is now considered murder.
And the 'how' and 'why' questions are where Amanda and Trent shine. But this time, they must work without the support and encouragement of their Sargent - Malone is in Intensive Care in a coma. And at home, Zoe is showing signs of obvious stress, but her problem is not shared with either Amanda or Zoe's twice-weekly session with her counselor. Amanda knows that this case is taking too much of her family time, time that should be spent helping Zoe adjust to the death of her parents and the new circumstances of her life, something Amanda didn't have to consider for the seven barren years between the death of her husband and daughter, and the adoption of six-year-old Zoe Parker after the murder of her only family, her parents. Thank goodness for the assistance they are receiving from Zoe's Godmother, schoolteacher Libby Dewinter. And for Trent's understanding. Much as she loves her job, Amanda has to prioritize Zoe's needs.
Murder…intrigue…family…friends…children…loved ones…this is a quick read with likable characters…it is fast paced with a satisfying conclusion…not easily determined by the clues…every time I thought I knew who the murderer was, I changed my mind… this author is talented at weaving a story that is difficult to put down. Enjoy this book…I look forward to more in this series…curl up in a comfy chair and spend an afternoon with the people in this story which reads like true crime…the book was sent to me from Netgalley for review.
I found myself massively invested in the protagonists life and problems, both work and personal. The author has created a character about whom you want to know more and it really keeps you turning the pages. The story itself is intense and fast paced. Amanda Steele is a great creation but I am sure this author will give us more than this series - very talented writer indeed.
I absolutely love this series. Her Frozen Cry is another taut, gripping police procedural with a twisty central mystery, made all the more tense by Detective Amanda Steele’s personal connection to one of the suspects. The characters are complex, with lots to unpick as the evidence starts to build. As ever, there are involving subplots relating to Amanda’s work and personal life too. The two overlap, causing high emotion and tension, which plays along nicely as the case unfolds at breakneck speed. Amanda’s ward, six-year-old Zoe, makes another interesting addition to the mix, with her traumatic background and Amanda’s need to balance work and family life. All the ingredients are perfectly handled to produce an addictively compelling read. Excellent.
(4.5)Even if you have never read Carolyn Arnold you know from the prologue some is going to die. When Alicia pulls the blanket around her to try and get warm, I was searching for my blanket even thought it was 77 degrees. You are immersed. This is part of a series and can be read as a stand alone. I have not read all in the series, and in missing some I had questions, but only because I had read some of them. Does that make sense? There is growth and changes that I missed. If this is a first time read for you, you will not miss them. I have to say I knew who the guilty part was from the get go, and I was right. Carolyn does a great job showing us why it could have been one of the others, and in fact I was totally surprised by one. You are part of Detective Steeles team riding along, seeing the clues trying to work them and juggle life. Her partner Trent has been a godsend to her, and you see the friendship and brotherhood. More? Maybe, who knows. These books always provide entertainment, suspense and even make you think. Thank you Bookouture, NetGalley, George Arnold for having a widget sent my way. Thank you for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions
Book #5 in the Detective Amanda Steele series and so much goodness. Amanda and Trent (love these partners) are called to the scene of a murder - the victims husband is an estranged friend of Amanda. So many suspects, so little time before another woman is murdered. This is a great quick read, this series just keeps getting better.
Thanks Netgalley and Publisher for this Arc. Looking forward to seeing where this series goes next!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
I really, really enjoyed this book. It is part of a series although it can be read on it’s own. I was drawn into the story and it’s characters from the first page. The author definitely knows how to write a good book and entertain her readers, and she grabbed my attention right from the start and didn’t let it go at all. I really liked the main character Detective Steele and her work partner Trent and found myself rooting for them to solve the murder(s) although the case takes a personal turn for Amanda when she has to investigate someone she knows and struggles with this. I thought the book was very well written and engaging with a strong plot line and flowed really well. I loved the little glimpses into Amanda’s personal and home life, and feel these give a lovely insight into her character, what her priorities are and give more depth to her character. Overall this is a great, thrilling read full of twists and turns that I didn’t expect. It raced to a final conclusion and I thought I knew who the killer was and I was completely wrong. If you like solid police/crime procedurals I’d highly recommend this and don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Fast paced, tense and unpredictable, I couldn't put it down. A really good read that I read in one very short sitting.
This was a great mystery, with lots of suspects, motives, and some nice twists and turns.
Amanda and Trent are called to investigate the death of a woman alone in a rental cabin. When they arrive at the scene, Amanda notices the woman had a photo of her family, and her husband turned out to be an ex of hers. Investigating her death gets tricky, but Amanda is determined to stay neutral despite their shared past.
This is a fast paced mystery with a great plot. This series is awesome, and this latest book was one of the best. Highly recommend.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
4 stars for a fast paced murder mystery, set in suburban Virginia. This is book 5 in the series and I have previously read book 4 in the series. However, there are events that happened in the 1st 3 books that are referred to in this book. I would have enjoyed this one more if I had read those 3. Amanda and her partner Trent are called to the scene of a suspicious death at a cabin in the woods. The investigation points to murder. While they do solve the case, the ending was a surprise and I did not suspect the killer until the end. Amanda is also dealing with issues in her personal life.
Because of her personal issues, she has difficulty in dealing with the case and her partner.
I read this book in 3 days. There are actually 2 murders in the book, but no graphic violence. This book would be suitable for cozy fans.
One quote: Amanda's thoughts upon finding out that the victim liked white water rafting: "She'd rather have a tooth pulled without drugs than barrel down a rushing river that swatted her around, eager to capsize the boat and drown her."
Thanks to Noelle Holten at Bookouture for sending me this eARC through NetGalley
This was another wild case that kept me guessing. Amanda and Trent are faced with a murder that brings Amanda's past into her present. Amanda's character had made so much progress over the course of the first four books that to see her backslide into her old ways was disappointing. Other than that it was a great read. There are plenty of twists to keep you guessing right up to the reveal. As the body count rises things get more and more twisted. I was sucked into the mystery.
Reading a new Amanda Steele story was once again awesome.
Carolyn Arnold has captured me with her her Detective Steele Series and I'm thrilled to say book five Her Frozen Cry was just as great as the previous four.
Another great read in this excellent series.
Amanda Steele, has to be my most favorite female homicide detective.
Her character is amazing and I devour her stories every single time I open them up.
The characterisation in this story is very good. Carolyn knows how to write amazing protagonist who I couldn't help but like.
This riveting, dark tale is powerfully intense, multi-layered, well constructed and developed a wonderful story, moved along at a breakneck pace, and an ending that compelled me.
Overall Her Frozen Cry is a mind blowing, page turning, explosive psychological thriller that will keep you up at night.
This was a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed.
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Bookouture,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I will post my review to my platforms, blog, B&N and Waterstone closer to pub date.
Really enjoyed this latest addition to the Amanda Steele series. It keeps getting better with each newest book. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Amanda next.
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.
When beautiful wife and mother Alicia Gordon is found dead in a remote woodland cabin, Detective Amanda Steele is shocked to discover that she knows the husband. Amanda hasn’t spoken to Tony since she lost the love of her own life seven years ago, and seeing tragedy tearing her old friend’s family apart brings back so many painful memories.
Alicia was alone when she died, but she was so young, and Amanda can’t help feeling suspicious. Then she discovers that Alicia’s sleep medication had been tampered with, slowly poisoning her over several days. Amanda wants to trust that the sorrow on Tony’s face is real, but the more she digs into his marriage, the more it seems that he had opportunity, and motive…
Absolutely brilliant… I just wish I could give it more than five stars! Got me from page one and I couldn’t stop reading till I found out how it would end!
My thanks to Carolyn and Netgalley for allowing me to read Her Frozen Cry prior to the publication date.
This is the 5th in the Detective Amanda Steele series, but it can be read as a standalone story as Carolyn provides just enough information about Amanda for the reader to understand the background.
Amanda continues to balance her working life with being a parent to her adopted 6 year old daughter, Zoe.
When wealthy entrepreneur Alicia Gordon is found dead in a woodland cabin, it appears that she had consumed an excess of medication. The question is whether it was an accident, suicide or murder.
During the investigation, Amanda discovers that Alicia was about to sell her company, although few people knew this.
Whilst Amanda interviews Eve Kelley, a bidder for the company, Eve collapses and dies, having consumed the same drugs as Alicia.
Amanda’s role is further complicated by the fact that 7 years earlier, she had socialised with Alicia’s husband, Tony,
Is this a case of ‘Follow the money’?
As you would expect, there are many twists, turns and red herrings in this book and not all the characters are what they would seem to be.
This was my first Carolyn Arnold novel and I rather enjoyed it though it was a typical murder/ crime whodunit. Having said that I could quite happily read the rest of the Detective Amanda Steele series!
It was a pleasant and easy read with a few twists, turns and misdirections and I liked the characters of the two investigating detectives, Amanda and Trent.
Thank you for approving me for this read.
Wow this one is way better then book 4 , it hits the ground running from the very start it has everything in it that I love which is suspense, intrigue, action , lies ,family drama , and keeps you setting on the edge of your set. It'll keep you guessing to the very end ,and when you think you have it figured out ,you're be like oh I had it wrong.
